A Fainga'a thought he'd be right to go but it wasn't 100% and with a long season ahead, it's probably the right thing to do than re-injure it and be out longer.

Nothing on Samo as yet but maybe one of the Qlders might have heard something about how he's going?

Samo injured. Not sure what where & how long. Think it happened in the first trial game.

Yeah it's his knee. Did it in the trials as SFR says.
Initially thought to be minor ie one week. But in that week he was having an arthroscope to see what was going on. Can only assume they had to do a tidy up once they got in there and we're now looking at 3-4 weeks min. That's my guess.

The problem as well for Samo is that recovering from injuries is always going to take him a bit longer than it does for a younger bloke.

Not sure if I agree with TPN having a lower work rate. I would consider him one of the hardest working hookers in the country.

He was a few years ago. Not anymore.

If you watched TPN closely for the last two seasons you would notice that he's been struggling. TPN will put in a huge effort then disappear for a few minutes, normally resting in the middle of the backline. The effort is still there, as is the level of impact per involvement, but there's less involvements and a much longer recovery time between them. Plus he's been prone to the odd shocker, like the final game vs the Reds last year where TPN was just about the worst player on the park, basically giving two tries and a couple of turnovers to the Reds (and credit to S. Finger in the next week for showing he can be just as bad if not worse, albeit S. Finger had a head knock and should have come off).

In saying that, TPN is still a fabulous hooker, but I'd say that Moore has clearly been the number one hooker in Aus for at least the last year, with TPN a clear number two.

Fair call.
I wonder if him swanning around the backline had more to do with the coach trying to use him as an extra loose forward?

Jeremy Tilse to start is a real surprise, particularly as it means Ryan will drop out of the 22. I suspect that he will get half a game and then Robinson will come on, Perhaps he will do the last 15 mins as THP so that Kepu can go flat out for the first 65 mins (the Al Baxter strategy, first introduced by Ewan McKenzie, I think). It will give the QLD THP nightmares with Benny coming on fresh and mad as hell. Watch out for the first scrum after he arrives.

Jeremy is an interesting case. He is only 26, started in the squad as an 18 year old. Props are at their best in the 27-32 age bracket, so he is just coming into his prime. The next five years for the Tahs could be a front row golden age, particularly as I think we'll be going to squads of 23 next year.

This might also be a start of a prop rotation program like they have in France. Say Kepu sits out next week with Benny and Ryan starting, with Tilse on the bench (Rebels scrum is not that hot) and then Ben and Kepu to start against the Brumbies with Tlse on the bench against the Show Ponies. Works for me and the Crusaders did it all year last year, albeit with three rotating rather than four.

Ash, I think this is absolutely correct. It's particularly noticeable at the ground. It can take TPN a couple of phases to get back into the line after he's made contact, with or without the ball. Dunno whether it's fitness, effort, or just him being a little gun shy because he keeps getting hurt...

Hoping it was only injury and fitness related. If that's the case, with a better preseason in front of him and no injury worries then TPN can get back to his best.

Has the tahs team been announced? I think the bench may look a little different to what we are assuming above.

No I put together tidbits from various articles suggesting what the team might look like. Not sure why the bench would be much different to what I got?

Sportsbet have Reds as marginal favourites, even though Waratahs team hasn't been announced yet

Reds $1.82
Waratahs $2.00

Maybe a 5/2 split with no outside back reserve. Volavola could cover.
