I love the Friday games - we always have stuff on on the weekend so Friday I get to go with either (or both) of the kids!

It's the 10 year olds turn this weekend so we'll catch a train in around 4pm, grab a burger on Park Rd then head on into the stadium.

Perfect Friday evening then we've the rest of the weekend free

Are you actually trying to imply that playing professional sports on a Friday night is short sighted and elitist?

Better get you in front of all the major sporting bodies around the globe, you’ve cracked the code!

Nope, just that you think it's easy because, A. you work in the city and B you think it'd be good for the elitist corporate crew.
Doesn't help grow the game, hard for working people with families.
Hard for anyone outside of a 15km radius of the city.
But great for the corporate old boys club.
Try getting to a 6:30 game on Friday night from the outer suburbs when you've already had to cross the city in shit traffic to get home.
Not everyone works in a suit.

You’ve lost the plot mate.

I’ve got plenty of mates who are Reds members and will be there on Friday and they don’t work in town.

Tradies, teachers, a couple of baristas.

And just because it’s easier for some people doesn’t make it a bad thing. I can’t tell if your post is trolling or you actually have an issue with this game time to the extent that it’s apparently elitist. It’s a farking sports game being played on a Friday night at the most central stadium in the city!

Should we jump on here and shit on all the Sunday arvo games because people have to work on Monday and it’s inconsiderate to them?

Friday night games never seem to bother Broncos fans and the Ipswich and Redcliffe lines are often standing room only after a game. By this logic it should be the Reds getting 35k plus every Friday night game they play seeing as apparently all the fans are already in the city. Very fortunate I don’t wear a suit to work lest I be labeled elitist.

You're all missing my point.

I'm happy it works out for you guys, really I am.
I'm trying to convey why the crowd will most likely be poor.
Friday night at half 6 isn't very convenient for a whole lot of Reds fans who would love to go for the belated season opening game.
Especially with kids. Sure, there will be some. But a lot won't be able to. That's where the game is grown.

Oh and Phil, when there has been a very rare afternoon game past seasons, which is great for families. There was a whole bunch of whining from posters here.
There are none this year, so guess the afternoon game whingers win out.

My elitist comment was purely to Phil for saying it's great for the corporate suite brigade.
Great for the reds bottom line I'm sure, but mostly full of pissed hangers on who don't really care about the game, just the paid for grub and booze.

Don't give a shit about league crowds.

I'll just get back to my lost plot.

The draw was released months ago - you plan around it!

I live in Collingwood Park so definitely aren't central & am meant to finish at 5pm - I've organised to finish early though so we can get to the game and I can have a quality afternoon with the boy.

That's great. I'm glad it works out for you.
Just trying to give another perspective for why the crowd is projected to be poor.
I'm not the only one who feels this way.
If we see a crowd above last years average I'll happily eat my lost plot.

Moana will be coming off a good hit out v Force. Reds a couple weeks off and back from the UK.

I think this game will be tougher than some people think. Some real class in the Pacifica team, they definitely appear to be able to create something out of nothing.

I'm excited to get a first look at this Reds squad after a decent off season building on 2024. Let's see what Les and his mates have done!

It will be no doubt be after a win… “ This Reds team are all class” …and if they lose …”it’s only the first game and after a bye the boys just need time to gel”!! …. Looking forward to the game. Should be good.

There's a lot of handwringing going on here.....

Reds have ambition to host the game in week one of the final. That probably means three/maybe four losses all year.

They absolutely can't afford to drop a game against MS at home, especially after the biggest investment in an off-season any super rugby team has ever made.

Kiss will have them primed for this

Reds to win, and win well, and put a marker down for the rest of the comp.

@Spamnoodle there has been enough air time taken up with this back and forth but my final point is - I don’t think the crowd numbers this Friday are going to be impacted by the game time.

Someone with more time than me can probably pull crowd figures from the last few years and I doubt there would be a substantial difference between a Friday and Saturday night game.

I know you don’t give a shit about league. But if the Friday night games were such a crowd killer, the Broncos and Dolphins wouldn’t be at war over who gets them.

I’ve been a Reds member on and off for years. And during the last great era we had during 2010/2011/2012 the crowds were regularly 30k+ whether it was a Friday, Saturday or Monday.

I’m just hoping for a Reds win so let’s focus on that. I’ll send you a photo from my private suite at full time.

Someone posted a couple of pages back (and I'm suggesting these numbers from memory) that the biggest crowd for the Reds last year was 17k and the average was 13-14k. That to me points to the overwhelming majority of fans being the members and other rusted on fans. There's not a massive swing in numbers based on the time of the game or the day of the game. Sure, those things will make it better or worse for some people and may impact whether they can attend that match but overall it doesn't move the needle massively.

I too miss the absence of afternoon games. They are great for families and a different vibe.

The basic structure of the competition since inception is that Friday and Saturday night features back to back games from New Zealand and Australia. I can certainly see why that remains the priority.

When the competition had 18 teams there was more flexibility for the odd Sunday or Saturday afternoon game. That isn't the case anymore.

Fundamentally though, Queensland should just stop being absolute weirdos and adopt daylight saving then there wouldn't be this issue. ;)

The Reds lowest two crowds were indeed Friday night games last year, however, it should be noted that those games were against the Highlanders and the Rebels who weren't quite the same pull as the other Kiwi teams and the Brumbies, Tahs e.t.c. It should also be noted the biggest crowd the Reds got last year was a Friday night game, although, that was against Wales.

It's a shame that Friday night games don't work for everyone, but conversely, there would be some that Saturday doesn't work for.

Curious, if you don't work in the city, how is a Friday game any different than a Saturday game? You still need to get to the game from wherever you live.

Then, depending what data point you use, Brisbane is one of the earliest rising cities in the world and I would daresay, in February-March many of us are up with the sun anyway.

Even with little kids and living in the suburbs, I find the 6:30pm kick off works better as it doesn't mean I'm getting home after 10pm with an alarm clock of 5am waking me up.

I think the point there is that if you need to go home to collect kids etc. before heading back to the city for the game, it is very difficult to make it by 6:30pm.

Maybe you mexicans need to adopt the approach of "Nothing new after 2, nothing more after 4".

In any event, I think we grossly over estimate the net benefit potentially a 1 - 3,000 people bring from a profitability side vs what TV does for a Friday night match.

In Kiss we trust - but I think it's Faessler best hooker in Australia, daylight second.

I hope our set piece isn't a shit show to start the game because that is one area we should have it all over Moana.

Completely agree, though I think I'd place Asiata ahead of the Fez in the scrum and around the field. Really interesting to see George Blake at reserve LHP. Hope he gets plenty of time. Spoke to him recently and he was happy anywhere in the front row (incl THP!) but I still see him at hooker. This should be an interesting exposition.

It's also great to see the long-serving stalwart of Fa'agase kicking off the season. I've got my eye on Brial too.

This thing about the backline size, well let's see how it develops. There sure as hell is some topline talent there.

Bring on the rugby. It's been too long.
