And a great flaw in the new interpretation, as the tackler has to let go to play the ball, players are left on the ground untouched and deemed (by Jourbert at least) as not tackled. They simply can get up and run again. Should you choose to hold them, you get penalized. Can we please keep messing with the laws.

They can only get up and run again if they place the ball on the ground, then stand up and grab it.

However, ther was an incident sort of similar that happen in the 12th minute. Ioane grabbed the opposition player after a kick through from Morgs, the ball carrier half went to ground and then sort of tried to lay the ball on the ground at the same time as he was standing up. Ioane gets done for not releasing, but as far as I could see the Saders player was on his feet, meaning the tackled was really completed.

I thought the 12th minute penalty against Ioane was frustrating, it looked like the Crusaders player went to ground but then tried to drive forward maulishly (?) and Ioane tried to force him back.

A few thoughts from the game:

A Fainga'a was my man of the match and made an impact everytime he was involved in the ball, ball in hand or not.

Cooper is a brilliant attacking flyhalf with all the skills and I love the way he is always looking to back up a break and put himself in a position to get the ball - great instinct. However he still needs to sort out his one on one tackling. I could partially excuse Palu last week, but the Ellis miss was very poor.

The pack is working well together, and Link has found a game plan that works for them. Different to the Tahs game plan he implemented based on their available skills (forward strength, less creativity in the backs). I think Link has looked at this Reds outfit and seen their major benefit over most teams is their age. Now that they are fitter than years past they are able to direct their energy better and play an up tempo game that often has the opposition on the back foot. If they can keep their energy levels like this while maintaining composure and direction they will shake a lot of teams this season.

As Noddy says, we need to start re-signing these guys now. Average team age must be all of what, 23? Keep this group together and add the odd player and the Reds could have another dynasty. But of course that should have happened 3 years ago.

I agree completely.
if the ref is going to penalise so readily for not releasing they should increase their vigilance on the tackled players not releasing as well, otherwise we will see an increase in infringements as players endeavour to prevent the tackled player from playing on as we saw last night.
A tackle is a tackle and both players must be adjudicated - not just the tackler.

my one complaint was how we finished the match. I know we were leading by plenty, but they looked rudderless when Quade and Morgs went off. Walsh isn't there to set up tries. He's there to close down the game. What they should have been doing was saying "ok, we are 5 points up against the Blues with 10 to go. What do we do?" and just plug the corners and maintain the lead.

In saying that, with Morgs, Quade, Will, Kev all off I am assuming Ben Daley was skipper? Rookie mistakes, but it was the wrong type of footy to be playing.

oh my wordy.

That was a great game. Pity about the crowd. Interestingly the win will bring more people back to next week's game, which is at Ballymore so it should be packed to the rafters, thus reigniting the back to Ballymore brigade.

But anyway, back to the game.

When is Van back? Shees we need him. Simmons went missing.

Very impressed with Fainga'a, other than some throwing that went AWOL.

Schatz had a great game too.

Awesome game by the backline though.

I love Quade. Love him to bits.

And they are combining so well. That first try was something special.

Oh. I am going to burst.
Damn straight we will need Van, given that Horwill will be out with an ACL injury.

I could write a book on last night, but everyone has made mention of the good things.

What I will say is how good was young Schatzy's debut...told ya!

And I am really happy for the Fainga'a brothers, Rod Davies and Quade Cooper. These young guys have copped a lot of criticism over the last twelve months but they really stood up last night.

Just had a quick glance at the draw for the reds:
V Blues (H)
V Cheifs (A)
V Force (H)
Bye

Some winable games in the next few weeks.

They would probably want a winnable game like the Force away. Shame.

Been watching Sharks v Chiefs from last weekend and have to say the Kiwi ref there was very sharp. The Sharks and their fans had no clue what was going on but Bob Skinstad was very accurate in describing what happened. At first glance I thought the Sharks were hard done by a couple of times, but the slowmo showed the truth and I'm more educated on this new interpretation for it.

I think I mentioned it last night during the online blather, but I thought it was very peculiar that Joubert allowed the advantage leading up to the bonus point try.

Typically, when a knock-on occurs on the ground, a ref will blow it up unless the ball bounces up into an opponent's hand. Similar with a forward pass.

I don't think I can ever remember a situation where someone has knocked the ball on in the way Ellis did, but then still get the pass away, whereupon Quade intercepted it.

Do we put this down to Ellis or the ref playing a rare kind of advantage?

I think it happens a fair bit. Usually it goes unnoticed. The guy receiving the pass gets tackled then the ref blows for the penalty and brings it back.
I think it was legit.

As I watched Quade take the intercept I thought the ref had blown it up but QC (Quade Cooper) kept running and had a look over his shoulder and went over the line. The ref did put the whistle to his lips but realised it was going to be an intercept and allowed for the advantage to be played.

Yes, it was probably actually just good refereeing. Nothing technically incorrect about it that I could see.

Started watching the Force and Canes game but got disinterested, so watched a replay of the Reds/Crusaders match.

The defence was really something and the Fainga'a twins were right amongst it. Ant Fainga'a has a great technique and tackles well above his weight. Genia also pulled off some beauties.

I agree. I guess it just struck me as weird that for once Joubert didn't blow it immediately.

Thought Joubert was great. Musta read some comments on here about binning. So it was good to see.

Yeh, I thought his reffing was quite good as well; he allowed the game to flow by playing advantage to the Reds when the Crusaders knocked the ball forward and the Reds then could counter attack from their half which resulted in 2 trys at least.

QRU need to be working of this high at the moment and signing as many of the team as possible. Start with Hynes and Cooper pronto.

Don't jump the gun on Cooper, he's still got a court case to deal with, that could very well result in some career ending proceedings.
that is true, however its easy to throw a clause in there in regards to the outcome of the court case, waiting until after the S14 to re-sign Cooper is leaving it a bit risky especially with the Force and Rebels prowling for a new 5/8.
