Reds 2020

I assume this is a bit of a tongue in cheek argument, but surely we want these young’s blokes to have a bit of collective ownership/us against the world mentality. I’m not sure I want that to be led by 1 or 2 strong personalities.

I thought players who were not either Wallabies eligible or able to become eligible couldn’t be signed anymore.

I reckon it’s Tongan Thor’s team now.

Wonder if he’d make a good captain material. Literally leading from the front. He wins all his scrum battles and is a good identity setter in terms of the physical that’s needed.

Richie McGaw spent a lifetime dodging 50/50 yellow card infringements simply because the referee afforded him the luxury that he was the team captain.

Could making Taniela Topou the reds captain be a silver lining similar to how Richie was treated?

Still too immature in my opinion.

Coming back from off-seasons overweight & openly talking about struggling to live by himself for the first time etc.

Down year, but eye-watering talent.

Why burden him with responsibility.

Just try and make sure he remembers to clearly use his arms when he tries to belt people TF into next week.

That’s as much responsibility as I want them to give Thor.

16 scrum penalties this season. Most penalized forward in the comp.

Outside the box thought.

What about Ben Te’o on a 1 year deal with a 1 year option?

He’s left Worcester, has been linked to a team in every comp including Super Rugby, most recently the Sunwolves on a dual deal with a top league side. If them, then why not us on the same arrangement? Not sure what the current RA rules around marquee players are but;

Pros
- he’s spent many years in Brisbane, is passionate about QLD
- The foundations in QLD are pretty strong sure and there is a great crop of youngsters coming through BUT they are 2-3 years away from being dominant Super players and the Reds simply must get more wins next year for the financial viability of the game. Kerevi’s departure is an absolute hammer blow to that ambition. Te’o is the only available player who could replace some of Samu’s skill set, leadership and crowd drawing abilities.
- he has history with the coaching staff

Cons;
- he is old (but so is Nonu)
- he isn’t wallaby eligible and would block the pathway of a younger Australian player (but to be honest I don’t see a 12 of that type ready to come in from club land or another Super side and it would only be for a year).

It would seem a bit of a departure from the Reds current philosophy but remember they signed Jono Lance for a year and played him in front of Stewart (also G Smith with Wright etc.). Personally I think the benefits of short 1+1 flexible deal on the right money far outweighs the cons.

Anyone got Dave Hanham’s email addresses?

Did you hear something or do the journalists just read the forums for their "news"

We played Samuball this year because he was our most potent (only?) attacking weapon. It has been mentioned on here that it may have hindered our general play a bit at times, I tend to agree in part, but it was hard to argue with the tactic considering the cattle we were losing in the backs and the go forward it gave us.

I think trying to emulate Samuball with another similar player, in this case Te'o, isn't the right move at all. For one it won't yield the same results because he isn't the same player and secondly we will have Jordan P back and hopefully the guys outside him (CFS, Stewart, Speight, Campbell, Lucas etc) will have a bigger impact than this year with added growth and experience. We need to go another route and imho it doesn't involve Te'o.

Doesn't that make it Rodda's team if he is the skipper?

Nah.

Although I do think he is a critical ingredient, that we absolutely can't lose.

He's an interesting one, as he is actually from Northern NSW but after getting a chance with Ippy Grammar he fell in love with QLD - in terms of his rugby identity. Love that.

I consider Jordy the centrepiece as I think he is the most gifted homegrown rugby asset QLD has had in recent memory.

I think Rodda is immense too no doubt, and I think he would make nearly any rugby side in the world.

Liam Wright is great, but who's to say he will hold his spot from McReight in coming seasons.

Jordy will make the world cup squad, or go very close, without even playing any rugby this season.

In addition he is humble and hardworking.

He is a ball-playing, physical, hard-running centre.

When was the last time we had one of those? If ever?

Hard running center yes. Tremendous talent yes. Ball player no. Think best suited to bend the line 12 or hard running 15 in outside channel

Lets not pump up Jordys tyres too much just yet, he hasn't even played a full season of first grade yet. I agree with the above, i would not consider JP a ball player (yet). He has great offloading ability and can pass the ball but he hasn't shown enough to be a 'ball player', nor has he played enough to display such skill. Immense talent however.

What are you talking about? Jordy Petaia is a great ball-player.

One of the highlights of his game at NRC for me was his ability to create space for others both inside, and outside of him. Only the really great 13s do that. Conrad Smith, BOD etc.
