What? Do you have a scientific paper that proves younger players are more likely to get injured?
Not saying your wrong. just I’m amazed coaches would consider that younger players need their minutes managed due to injury risk.
Unfortunately the journals returning from some Google searches are behind paywalls. But from the news articles, injuries are higher for younger players for a couple of reasons; their ligaments etc lag behind the muscle growth so a rolled ankle for an Adult may have a great impact on a younger person. Then there's the fact the young guys want to impress so they play through injuries when they should rest.
Petaia got injured 15 minutes into the Reds second game of the season. Surely being overplayed wasn't an issue.
It's not so much a case of being overplayed, but not having a body that's had time to adapt to the higher intensity and for Petaia, he put a lot of bulk on over the off season. So he is/was still growing into his body.
When you look at other 'contact' based sports in NFL and even to a lesser extent Football. The former has 19-22 year olds going to College to play other aged adults and Football (in Europe) has a similar U19-U23 program which focusses on the youth developing skills and physically before going to the Pro leagues.
All I'm saying is, it should not have been unexpected that Petaia picked up a significant injury and that a coverage plan of a guy who's Hammy's are holding on by a single muscle strain wasn't a proper plan.
