Still can't believe we signed Maranta or whatever that dudes name is. How bout some Union or at least ex union talent. Fou went to Rebels ( we missed big time there) so howwwww bout we had just waited till the end of the NRC to see if guys like Con Foley or anyone else from the sevens was good to go.

Or anyone.

Anyone else.

We have filled our Japanese spot (Tui)

But have we filled a foreign marque or a foreign developing slot (formerly held by JJ Taulagi)? surely there would be gun PI player or ITM cup winger or SOMEONE who could come in as a cover 11/14/15 that wouldn't dig into our total squad numbers (as marque/foreign developing players don't)

But seriously is Maranta that bad? I don't follow league. He's on 70k at reds? So do we think we should have steered that elsewhere or is this a good option/stopgap?

I can't believe what a big deal is being made about his signing. He looked OK as a schoolboy player and has been in a professional setting for the last few years. If he was a marquee player I'd understand but he's pretty much a back up/bench player and being paid as such. I for one hope he takes his opportunities with both hands and develops into something special.

Taniela Tupou is the foreign development player isn't he, I think he becomes eligible for the Wallabies next year

A player is no longer considered a foreign development player in their 3rd season even though it takes 3 years to become eligible. So the Reds can sign someone else. Not sure what the quota on NSW players is though ;)

Wonder what Cam crawford is doing. Or even Paul Asquith now. (obviously nrc but next season) They would have been better cheap backup options.

Foley would be an ideal 12 for the Reds. Very much in the Matty To'omua mold of player.

I'm not sold on Duncan Pia, and I'd rather Karmichael plays 15.

Maranta was cheap. $70,000 for a bloke who played some school rugby and a bit of League.

It puts it in perspective when some fuckwit paid Hunt $700,000 who also played some school rugby, a lot of great league and some shit years at AFL. He still hasn;t gone anywhere near playing to his pay scale.

I reckon give Maranta a go in 2017 before we flog him to death.

He certainly seems to have attracted a level of vitriol in league that is surprising. He was Broncs top try scorer last year and is supposedly very good under the high ball. I still think it's a rushed, poorly thought through signing but am happy to wait and watch for half of 2017 before sharpening my pitchforks

Cheap is all relative Scrubber. Paying $70k for someone to play club rugby & NRC is expensive when guys at a similar skill level (IMO) are doing it for free.

Hunt is terribly overpriced at $700k and has not delivered anywhere near the value expected for that. Throw in the drug scandal that dragged the Reds through the mire and it's comical.

Hunt doesn't just get payed big $$$ for his ability on the field. Let's not be ignorant to the fact that players like him draw crowds/star team mates and attention....among other things.
Also why do u think cheika had him at the wallabies camp despite his injuries? He is very experienced at big game footy and provides more off the field then just his on field ability!

I agree he DID bring something at the start. Extra buzz. But then that was clearly fucked with the drugs scandle. Then I thought, well fair enough (although I would have immediately sacked the bloke) I'll just let his rugby do the talking.

Fuck, as far as I am concerned he did that like a mute with the exception of 2 or 3 games.

Why did Chek pick him in the wider group. Fuck knows.

The money paid to Hunt was obscene. Time, as it always does, has revealed that.

Couldn't agree more Scrubber.

I would go further: every time the Reds/QRU have gone for a 'prestige/media-boosting' player it's been a total waste of $ or a playing failure or both, with the additional decrement that these mad recruiting calls have limited or forestalled the development opportunities of younger players.

It's the so-called minor marquee or similar players that have been the comparative successes: Braid, Samo, Harris come to mind. And these were all Link choices (or was Braid a Mooney call for 2009?).

I believe big money has been paid for Smith and Moore, both of whom are at career end or near, and will keep promising younger players out of immediate development opportunities. As you say, we will soon know the wisdom of these recruitments.
