Too often we couldn't exploit overlaps because the critical player, normally Taps or Turner, died with it and didn't look to pass.

Too often we turned it back in to the defensive wall.

Need some changes of direction or different lines or something.

Lucky we have good halves, because our outside backs are a good step down from 2011 right now. We have the same problem at 6/8 too. Schatz wasn't bad tonight, but Quirk was well off.

The first two things you mention were so obvious and frustrating, Quade's natural game is not that - is it the coaching??

I thought Shatzy was pretty good tonight. Quirky needs to find some form pretty quickly though. Do we think he is still affected by off season shoulder surgery? Browning isn't far off.

I reckon Quade is playing great.his touches are nice and he is making room for those outside him.
But his runners aren't running lines or holes, they seem to be drifting, waiting for the ball, like 12 yo's.
Put AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) at 13,and automatically he would be on fire.

Yes he is my point is Quade loves looking for runners that line up on the outside of defenders and then he throws that wide pass to get them around the defender. The runners aren't offering him this option which is puzzling, I'm sure it's not Quade's directive it must be the attacking coach.

When CFS is fit I think you have to try Tapuai at 12 and CFS at 13. Taps' form is improving but Harris isn't doing much and more importantly isn't making great decisions. Ant Fainga'a is looking well off the pace when he comes on.

On the wing, I think Davies is looking alright but Shipperley is no better than solid and Turner won't be the catalyst for much of the attack.

Quade is playing well and Genia is improving (although still not taking on the line enough) so the problems are outside them.

The front row did well tonight and Slipper and Hanson were excellent in particular. The backrow were soundly beaten though.

Considering the inexperienced players they were playing against, Horwill and Simmons weren't nearly as influential on the game as they should have been.

Forget the backs for a bit - need to be going forward first.

Not enough blokes getting over the advantage line. Not quick enough recycle. Not enough offloads and short passes before contact.

The last of these points is something they could work on to help the other two. The forwards attack is too easy to pick off at the moment.

Schatz has started to run more effectively. Also think the tight 5 are running reasonably well, would be a big ask to expect much more impact out of them. Just need one big unit in the backrow that can carry defenders and add some spark to plays.

What has happened to the Reds attack? Are we missing Digby through the centre? Is it the coach? Lots of ball but trouble scoring.

A lot of wrong/conservative decisions coming from 12/13/15. Plus, we are missing a real line breaking/tackle busting threat out wide. Turner has a lot of great qualities, but he will never break a tackle or beat a man one on one with anything other than pace. Same for Davies, by and large.

Thought Shipperley was looking a little better last night, shame about his injury.

Was disappointed in Turner at fullback as I thought he made a few wrong decisions, particularly when to run, kick or pass. I think Turner's best place is generally wing, where he plays a second fullback role as needed.

Right now the only penetrative outside back we have is Taps. A 12. Taps 13. CFS midfield in a few weeks will be our best bet. Won't help our problems out wide, though.

A guy like Digby is really missed, although Digby hasn't been in good form since 2012.

The big issue with Taps isn't his attack, it is his lead feet in defense.

How he can be such a twinkle toes in attack but get beaten so easily in defense escapes me. He must improve this part of his game if he wants to be a regular s15 starter let alone a test player again.

In my experience he is actually a very sound defender. It is just in that wider channel that he can be exploited by players with genuine pace as Jesse Mogg showed. Clearly our best center pairing is Taps at 12, CFS at 13. It is dissapointing that it has taken us this long to recognise it.

Quirk had an average game defensively last game, fell off a few tackles he should have stuck. It maybe time to get some rotation for Schatz and Quirk, those guys have been working overtime since the start of last season.

Wholeheartedly agree. Although Shatz probably played his best game all year, was very physical. There was a loitering Stormer on our side of the ruck, Jake grabbed him and threw him into the backline.

Browning got 30min off the bench, he has cut his teeth captaining the Reds A in the Pacific Cup the past month, expect to see him get a starting jersey next weekend.

That was Jean Devilliers I'm pretty sure. Deadset rag dolled him. Loved it!!!

In general I agree but you can't make excuses for him just because he is defending at 13. Fact is quick enough off the mark to defend in that spot but tends to plant his feet and miss his timing.

If Ant can defend in that channel effectively so can Taps.

Yeah, I hear what your saying and definitely agree although I can't remember him missing too many tackles? Either way, it's just another reason why he is better closer to the ruck.
