Yeah I like the merch - members should always get something like that to wear to the game. QRU must be going ok financially if they can start adding value like this to the memberships which can only be a good sign. Obviously Quade's brand gets some pretty solid marketing out of the shirts so would be wearing some of the cost also but the scarf and hat are a good idea. The more Red in the crowd, the more intimidating the "Fortress" would seem to visiting sides.

I think the shirts are rubbish and I will be giving mine away. I mean, jesus, it's a team sport and they give us some gen-Y crap with Quade's initials plastered all over it and some vague slogan about self love? What a wank. Waste of my membership dollar.

Pleased to get a scarf though..

Really?! I'm far from Gen Y and I think they're great! If you didn't know that was Quade's brand I doubt many would make the connection between that logo and Quade. It's all about making the fans feel more like part of the team and it's things like this that the Reds have been doing that is helping grow the fan base which is why your membership dollar is now going further.

But in all seriousness, it's probably Quade that is wearing most of the cost of the shirts so I wouldn't worry about your membership dollar too much.

If they want the fans to feel part of the team then reduce the over priced jersey's. Currently, they've priced them at $125 for a jersey! That's a complete utter rip-off for a jersey and it's nowhere near cost price for the jersey + a profit cut. For example, I picked up the Wallabies RWC jersey for $30 during the sales which I'm sure Kooga still made a profit on.

Additionally, I don't understand why at all jersey's across all codes are so expensive. I follow Chelsea in the English Premier League and I can buy a jersey for $62-$63 (plus $8-10 in shipping).

Rather than giving us those QC (Quade Cooper) shirts, they should use that money into reducing the Reds Jersey's to be under $90 and hey you might actually have a sea of red.

I have no real issue with adult jerseys being $130. If you really want one you will find the money. I do think that they should produce kids ones at around $50 or less. It would be a great ploy to grow the game as kids tend to support teams more if they have the kit. I made the mistake of buying my son a t-shirt with the AB's doing the Haka on it and he tells me he supports New Zealand now (He is almost over this as my wife had words to him while I lay on the ground crying).

The old buy your nephew your team's jersey for Christmas never fails.

Clubs sell the merchandising rights to their team, in this case Kooga are the ones who produce and set the price of the Reds jerseys..

QRU in turn receives a set annual fee and also a % of all sales..

In terms of the RWC jerseys, purely a case of Kooga overestimating demand and now having a oversupply of outdated gear..

Couldn't agree more about the price of the jerseys - they're very over priced. But what 40,000 QC10 shirts would've cost the Reds (next to nothing) wouldn't be able to offset the price of the jerseys at all, let alone by close to 30%.

It's not so much that, it's just overpriced for what they are and it appears to be the same across all codes in Australia. I personally haven't bought a new jersey since 2010 as the white box around the St George logo ruins the entire jersey for me.

Unless the QRU have a huge chunk of the sales it's a stupid move. Why would you let your jersey maker set the price of the merchandise you're selling. You'd be giving them too much leverage I'd imagine.

But for comparison sakes; the jersey's for all NRL teams cost the same regardless of who makes them (all $160) http://www.amartallsports.com.au/eng/categories/fan-gear/rugby-league (Note - I just checked the Broncos site and they're charging $170 for a jersey). And Football jersey's http://www.amartallsports.com.au/eng/categories/fan-gear/soccer-football

Additionally, why can I buy the same Reds Jersey for $100 odd from the States (plus shipping of course) which originated from Australia (I thought the Kooga production is done on the Gold Coast)? http://www.worldrugbyshop.com/51167.html

I reckon that quade cooper shirt looks shithouse.

How hard would it be to produce a nice members t shirt you could wear at the gym/when running, or alternatively a nice polo to wear to games.

Did you even read what I said?

Kooga pay the QRU quite a handsome annual fee(in the form of sponsorship) in return for been the merchandiser for the Reds, the QRU would also receive a % of all sales...

Its the same in every sport and every professional team.

They do make them, Reds training shirts/singlets or Reds Polo's are available in the merch shop. ;)

C'mon fellas, it's a freebie they're chucking in. If you don't like it, use it to polish the car or something but complaining about how wanky or shithouse they are (if anyone in the Media Teams read here) only reduces the chances of getting freebies next time.

Yes and it still doesn't answer why the QRU should allow Kooga to set the prices. Kooga and the manufactures should only be brought in to manufacture the jersey's and the QRU can control distribution. What happens if Kooga over price and jersey sales go down and along with it revenue? The QRU wouldn't have the power to rectify this.

But, lets say you're correct, Kooga sets the jersey's price at $130. How is an external seller able to sell them for at least $30 cheaper? Who in turn is selling to this company for a lower rate? I doubt they'd be selling these jersey's at such a mark down if they weren't turning a profit. It simply doesn't add up.

QRU should not control the distribution/sales because like anything, it's more productive to outsource to a company who specialises in this field.. It's also why the QRU outsources ticketing to Ticketek etc

In addition, if Kooga over price the jersey and sales dive, then they are damaging their bottom line as well, they arent going to do this..

Speaking of jersey's and the like, I wonder if when the kooga deal expires the reds might move towards a bigger manufacturer like addidas. Addidas love to associate themselves with blue chip teams (All Blacks, France, British Lions, Crusaders, Stormers, Munster etc.), and if the reds continue the upward trend they might fit the bill.

I hope not. Why? Because I am a real big fan of KooGa gear - really well made and it all seems to fit me really well (which is rare because I am not an average shape). Adidas has never done that for me. :D

But yes in seriousness, I take your point on the blue collar thing. Could be a perfect fit!

The collars on kooga stuff are always too loose. I think it looks silly and it doesn't feel right at all.

Potentially, but the management at Kooga Australia are renowned rugby fans and the Kooga we know was grown from Queensland roots, I would be surprised to see them let go of the Reds brand without a fight..

If I get any new Reds gear, it will be the polo. I was going to buy a new Reds jersey a few months ago, but I hated it when I tried it on. My missus told me to put it the fuck back on the shelf!

In the meantime, I will continue searching for my old Reds jersey I lost in my last move. Looked something like this:

It was one of the 1996 jerseys though, I think.

It's great you get a tshirt with your membership pack, but that's a doozy. A logo shirt with 2013 on it or a "we are red" surely is a better marketing idea than some sort of Internet keyed frowny face.
