$15k is pretty decent for a 18-21 year old. Alot of then also study part time. I think it is appropriate for younger players who haven't earnt the big bucks yet

Then there are those only on $5k, having to work to support themselves, make it to training, then missing work because sessions went overtime or extra ones put in, not living at home and doing their own washing and cooking unlike those who still live at home and are at uni, not having to work to survive.

I think you would be surprised at how many are only on $5k, keeping them on a string making it very difficult for some, maybe they are seeing who can stick it out.

EPS and NTS are two separate squads, the NTS is actually funded and run by the ARU and ultimately has no direct relevance to the QRU, the EPS are run individually by each team who arrange all the contracts under the relevant team(ie Reds).

The initial question was in regards to the EPS players at the Reds and what sort of wages they earn.

EPS and NTS are two separate squads, the NTS is actually funded and run by the ARU and ultimately has no direct relevance to the QRU, the EPS are run individually by each team who arrange all the contracts under the relevant team(ie Reds).

The initial question was in regards to the EPS players at the Reds and what sort of wages they earn.

I was not referring to NTS or EPS, I thought the conversation was about the academy players, and it is the majority of these who are on a shoe-string amount. I am sorry for the confusion but you have to admit the whole situation is confusing.

Browing was outstanding for Uni yesterday against Sunnybank particularly at the breakdown. He has transitioned from Schoolboy to Prem Grade quickly and well and is surely a "moral" for a Reds EPS contract next year

If they are paying 15-20 per player it would be nice to see it expanded to 10 players, not just 5.

I agree hugely.

Add some tactical depth to Super rugby recruitment, if you hire 10 unknowns for your EPS you have a huge squad and always have injury cover. If you hire 3 established EPS players you get the confidence you have good back-ups but then THEY have no back-ups.

We don't need sanctions on squad/EPS numbers, just on salary limits. From there, let each province manage their way.

A squad of 20 has a salary cap of $250k, but it is not a socialist system.Obviously some get more than others.
What they also get is a game at this 20's level for a season. Rugby does not do this.

Quite a few names coming into contention for EPS spots, which is good to see, strength in the local comp.

Also heard UJ Seuteni won't get another contract because he simply has not been able to perform at club level. No complaints here, I would much rather see Louis Frisby or Dion Taumata take that spot.

I would probably suggest Tamata over Frisby let frisby earn it in the premier grade ranks first.

One thing i find interesting is how the waratahs have supposedly signed both Matt Lucas and Dan Lane......Unless Lucas is goin in as a halfback but that would mean they are droppign grayson hart?.......the plot thickens

I would probably suggest Tamata over Frisby let frisby earn it in the premier grade ranks first.

I'm not sure about Taumata's contract situations but I know Frisby has been offered deals by a few NRL teams already but is hoping something solid will pop up with the Reds (EPS) or elsewhere in Australia, for that reason we are probably better to pick Frisby or risk losing him. Whether or not he gets enough Premier games under his belt to show his worth before they need to make a decision is an issue though. Im not sure if he played against Bros on the weekend but against Uni he only played approx 3/4 a game in reggies which included 10mins in the sin-bin.

Matt Lucas will be the third halfback behind McKibbin (were there rumors of him going at one stage?) and Hart, with Pretorius being forced out.

I have been trying to work out the Reds backs next year, and it is clear some will miss out on the 22 altogether.

I assume they will have something like:
9 Genia
10 Cooper
11 Diggers
12 Taps
13 A. Finger
14 Shipperley
15 Morahan

With Lucas and Harris on the bench covering 10/12/15, although there will be rotation. If they take another back I assume it will be Frisby.

This leaves Lance and Sautia out of the 22 at the start of next year. Probably a good thing as Sautia can take some time to get injury free and some first grade experience.

Davies misses out too, assuming he is still around.

The Academy is the same - funded by ARU - lads having to do as Country Rugby says for a payment that doesn't cover rent or hardly a weeks food bill. Many doing it tough. No wonder they try other sports.
EPS may make life a bit more comfortable but again, will depend on amount.

Don't rush in, just wait until Toyota Cup players are over 20yrs of age.
By then the rugby league clubs have improved their fitness, strength & conditioning and usually taught them how to tackle too.
Every season between 150-200 of them leave Toyota Cup and do not go to the NRL, as they are either discarded (majority) by their clubs or realise they want to do something else.
Over 75% have already played rugby union and there's plenty of raw talent to consider for rugby.
Rocky Elsom is one who came from the Bulldogs Jersey Flegg team back to rugby.

like twentyseven mentions above.. There are no other academies.

The ARU has consolidated all the states academies into its own NTS(National Talent Squad), each state still has a EPS(Extended Player Squad) which is limited to 5 players but no longer have academies.

This could change for 2013 with the QRU planning on funding their own academy.

The NTS and EPS are two different squads..

NTS is the academy run by the ARU, the EPS is in reference to the 5 players signed to the Reds on reduced contracts but train with the main team, there are rules and regulations as to when these players can be used.

Money has dried up for Country RL playing options as Player/Coaches and State Cup Clubs are struggling to pay much more than $300 a win.
