This is one of the better make the right noises and talk is cheap pre-season pronouncements that Link was always good at.

I think most Aussie fans outside of Queensland wish the Reds well this year except in those two games against their own teams. In our eyes they deserved success last year because they had a go and played rugby that was good to watch.

He's a gifted communicator. Probably one of his great advantages as a coach, along with his technical understanding of rucks and mauls.

This idea terrifies me. That is just asking for mutiny.

Link just needs to make a call, one way or the other.

Logic would suggest that it has to be Jimmy Horwill though.

Logic? Why, does he have a property right to the position?

A player poll would reflect who is the better captain much more accurately than the coach's judgement. Rod MacQueen did it - Brett Robinson was the first Brumbies captain because that's who most of the players nominated when MacQueen went around and quietly asked.

Yeah why is the players opinion/poll not a good idea? Every team I've been apart of selects their captain by the players, makes sense since they're the ones that are being lead by the captain - not the coach.

But in a professional set-up there are other things apart from on-field leadership and as such there are more stakeholders they need a say.

I wouldn't be frustrated to see Genia and Horwill named is a co-captaincy rotation policy. They could both one day be test captains and there is no reason why they both can't be developed in this regard.

I think there is a good chance that the Reds will go with a leadership group that work together. Still think that Horwill will have the (c) next to his name but Genia will make a lot of on field calls if he identifies an opportunity.

The problem with play poll's is that the most popular player is selected and they may not be the best person to convey what the coach wants on the field.

Genia will still make a lot of the on field decisions as any good half back does, but ultimately Horwill will be the captain...

And as you say Jets, player popularity isn't always a reflection of a players ability to convey his coaches game plan..

Thats BS - Macqueen appointed Robinson - there was no player vote - I asked someone that was on the staff at the time. Ironically Robinson was injure dthe first 2-3 games and Mckenzie was the first to actually captain the team on the field

Do you vote for your CEO, do the military vote for their leaders - leadership is about respect not being liked - ask the players and their mates will get the gig - What makes an 18y/o better qualified than the coach?

Do you vote for the Prime Minister?

But I agree, it shouldn't be a popularity contest. We didn't vote for a captain in U12's, and it shouldn't be done in professional rugby either. Coach should always have the last call as a captain has a lot more responsibilities than just being someone other players look up to.

Carlton Mid to sponsor Queensland Reds

By Media Unit

Queensland Rugby has announced an important new sponsorship deal with Carlton and United Breweries that will see Carlton Mid served at Reds Super Rugby games.

Reds Chief Commercial Officer Daniel Herbert announced the sponsorship and pourage rights deal after considering offers from other potential partners including Lion Nathan.

“This is a significant deal for Queensland Rugby and we are pleased to partner with CUB in this extended Super Rugby competition year.”

The deal ends the Lion Nathan/XXX association with Queensland Rugby spanning more than two decades. “We want to take this opportunity to thank Lion Nathan/XXXX for their contribution over many years. They were long established supporters and we acknowledge their positive role.”

“The decision to accept the CUB offer was a commercial one. Carlton and United Breweries offered a deal that included opportunities for the Reds and Rugby State-wide.”

CUB Queensland General Manager Cameron Levick said Carlton Mid had previously been associated in Queensland with the Brisbane Lions and heavily involved in horse racing but this is the first time it has been involved with the Reds.

“Rugby is part of the fabric of Queensland and the agreement, a first for rugby at this level, allows exposure into all tiers from club level to the elite.

“Fellowship, a game for all shapes and sizes and a sense of fair play are the cornerstones of Rugby and it is a philosophy Carlton Mid is proud to be associated with.”

“Carlton places a strong value on rugby as a sport and supports the new aggregation model that Queensland Rugby is embracing for the future of the game. We are genuinely excited about the Reds and look forward to supplying our premium brands to rugby supporters everywhere.”

The agreement will see CUB introduced to Queensland Rugby clubs and other stakeholders throughout the State to ensure other organisations have an opportunity to embrace competitive opportunities.

Well I don't believe that players would select who is the most popular. At least we didn't when we selected our captains. We selected who had the best leadership qualities.

GO THE REDS!!!

Perhaps applies to both the PM and the topic at hand.

Anyway, I think having the coach talk to senior players in the group would be helpful, assuming there are those who aren't captaincy contenders themselves whose opinion would be worthwhile. Probably something more discreet like that is more helpful than a player poll.
Ultimately, though, it matters most that whoever is chosen has the unified support of the team, whoever it may be.

And why do we assume that there is not lots of discussions with everyone - ultimately someone needs to make a decision and be accountable - will the players be accountable for voting in the wrong captain - no the coach would take the wrap so he may as well call the tune if he is repsonsible for it

I'm not speculating on what they do or don't do, I'm saying what I would do. Perhaps I should have made it clearer that I believe the ultimate decision rests with the coach, but consulting players should form part of that; players and coaches see the potential captains from different perspectives and an understanding of both can be helpful.

I reckon they should do an on-line poll. On G&GR!
