I hate hype, its a killer set up for disappointment, Reds are still short on depth in key positions which will be crucial in 2011 with the extended season

TOCC, can you please explain the extended format for next season? I'm a bit unsure of how the season works next season with the fixtures and the extended format. Thanks in advance

I can do it briefly so TOCC can save his breath.

It is now divided into conferences. An Australian one, NZ one, SA one. Each team in each conference plays each other twice, once at home and once away. We then play some of the other teams from each conference off the top of my head I think its two? Maybe three? So it comes down to luck with which each team. The finals series work so that the top team from each conference will qualify. The next 3 teams will be how many competition points one team has. So it doesn't always mean two teams from each conference will make it.

A Canadian company is still finalizing the draw and the finals series. But as I mentioned above 6 teams qualify for the finals. Should be an awesome season.

Heard from a guy close to the QRU that the Reds being in the financial difficulty they are will not invest in a Gold Coast game. A shame really. But understanding with this financial climate

Each team plays 16 games, the other 4 teams in your conference are played twice on a home and away basis. 4 out of 5 teams are then played in each of the other 2 conferences ie each Australian team will miss 1 SA team and 1 NZ team. This is played over 18 weeks with each team having 2 byes. It is a 6 team finals series with the top team from each conference qualifying and then the next 3 best teams overall.

so if 6 make the finals, do the top 2 get a bye or something? can't have 3 semifinals with 3 winners....

so play in games for 3 vs. 6, and 4 vs. 5. then winners play 1 and 2 for spots in the final game?

The finals are played over 3 weekeends.

Weekend 1 - The two conference winners with the best record get the weekend off. The other conference winner and the other 3 teams with the best overall record play off on a ranking basis to qualify for the semis.

Weekend 2 - Semi Finals - the two conference winners who got weekend 1 off play the two winners from weekend one on a ranking basis.

Weekend 3- Final - The two winners from weekend 2 play in the Final.

the Reds have it all before them next year, whilst I think the pack will be better off for their 'wallaby' experiences, Braid is still a MASSIVE loss.

And everyone will be watching Quade next year. He was borderline laughing stock at the start of this year. People know his brilliance, but they are more aware of his weaknesses too.

It will be a lot tougher to finish 5th next season, then it was this.

Wow, that may get a bit confusing if say 3 Kiwi team top the table, but then only one gets the first week off. Should have had the first week based on overall finishing position.

That's unlikely ruggo, the draw is designed in a way that makes that sort of placing unlikely.. We are most likely to see a even spread from each province ...

IMO the Bulls and Sharks are best placed, playing the cheetahs and lions twice leaves room for a big for/against and plenty of bonus points.... Something which will be a lot harder in aus/nx

Reds are quickly on way to becoming the most hated team in Super rugby with fans comments like that..

how about we celebrate the Reds when they actually make the finals or heaven forbid, win the super15

Impossible, Stormers fans having expectation in their team takes things to a whole new level. But we won't get into that.

It's a very messy finals. I'm not a fan

Yes, the team has more experience than last year. But it's a new competition and we're lacking depth in key areas (particularly 7). Should we be hopeful and proud of the current state of the squad? Yes. Should we be expecting to win the title or be the duck's nuts? God no.

Be happy with how things stand, but a massive chill pill is needed I think.

I can't speak for others but I am just excited at our prospects. I am not into disrespecting other peoples teams but am just happy about the change. Attitude within the organisation is the one that has left me impressed the most. I like that we are attracting the players we desire and are retaining the ones we need and all in the face of a new franchise being established. I want next season to be taken one game at a time as I wanted the last season taken. It is how to keep a team well grounded.

Although I may tend to blow a bit of smoke up the Reds arse at times, please don't interperate it as arrogance as it is certainly not intended that way.

I suspect I am not the only Reds supporter that feels this way.

Yours Truly
Long suffering Reds fan.

Thats great thare you all have passion for the Reds, however we just need to keep it in check a bit, like you mention Ruggo, other fans misinterpret what is been said as arrogance or cockiness, in turn it makes them feel as though they need to say something to bring reds fans back into perspective. Basically it starts unecessary arguments that aggravate everyone.

Im not saying that people should hide there passion, but just put it into perspective, we havent won a S14 comp yet, nor have we made the finals in nearly 10 years.

I agree that the Reds haven't won anything yet, but by golly, part of following a team is the "what-if" factor. The excitement of what could be. It's a bit like buying a lotto ticket; you know the odds are against you, but you are in it with a chance. Up until the final ball dropping (whistle sounding) anything is possible...

Having said that, I'd really like the Reds machine to maintain this new-found respect and to continue to be admired by other supporters for our results and the manner of those results. I don't want us to be hated; let's not become the Collingwood/Man United of the S15....

Frankly, for many of us Reddies, the other more recent re-motivating factor is to compare this year's Reds with this year's debacle-a-minute, dispirited Wallabies. No one is saying (yet ;-) ), the Reds are better, but the contrast in many respects could not be greater.

Well, there you go. How wrong I was :(

I maintain that he was a bit of a solid journeyman though! Will provide some nice and much needed depth after the loss of Byrnes, but won't be a match winner.

And agree with TOCC; fair enough to cheer when the Reds go well, but no need to come across as arrogant bastards and troll other supporters. Come on here and enjoy the Reds success by all means, but preferably not in a manner which will see all Reds fans hated by everyone else.

Ash, I assume you will also be sending this advice re 'restrained enthusiasm' down south to the Tahs posters here....btw, did you hear JP's rather catty aside about the Reds/QLD on the last Rugby Club?
