academy players signed for next year; Gill, Quirk, Shipperley, Situati, Shatz

academy players getting game time; Tapuai, Shaw, Slipper

academy players dominating premiere rugby or in the U20s; Albert Anae, Aidan Toua, Jono Lance.

It is possible that almost the entire academy will be in the senior squad next year. Who will be getting the boot?

Tasi appears to be gone. Blair is gone. Braid is gone. Byrnes. Dayna. Hardman. Kingi. Kennedy. Weekes. Morgan?

Also McLinden and Fetoa are still on the Reds books this year

Yeh I remember him playing in the arc, and got excited, but haven't really heard much of him since.

Toua??? He was still at school when the ARC was going. I don't htink he got a run.

Andrew (Shaw) is a mate of mine and is still in the Reds Academy and playing for Brothers who his dad is still the Chairman of. He is still training his guts out to make the senior squad but is on the outer with Link becasue of the penalties he gave away against the the Tahs in round 1.

they were pretty silly penalties, it would have been well known to him that he cant do that anymore

however, i think it would be a bit rough to keep him on the outer purely because of that

I think its because of the constant penalties he continues to give away in Premier Rugby. I lie not and say, that whenever I go and watch Brothers, he is the most penalized player on the park say 2 out of 3 times. There's no way Shaw will get a run with the Reds, when there is Simmons, Byrnes and Humphries, as well as Quirk and Gill coming into the fray next year. Although they are not specialist front rowers, would the idea of putting Higgers in the 2nd row if injuries persist throughout the 2011 season as Byrnes will be at the Rebels.

Well said that man...if only others were so observant. I've calmed down a bit after my initial comments about him, but the bottom line is the canes ran in 2 tries while he was in the bin. The penalty was a bit harsh considering he let him down ok, but in a game like that he should have known a hell of a lot better than to even get into the situation.

The Reds still have (as do the Tahs, Brumbies and Force) the right to a marquee player and a development player from abroad. With Braid gone, anyone got thoughts on possible types of recruit?

Marquee player at this stage must believe that their shot at a RWC is limited. Although as the Boks have chosen internationals from overseas before Juan Smith would be bloody handy at 7.

In regards to developing player looking around Argentina for another prop wouldn't be a bad place to start.

a backrower of note would be awesome.

Harinordorqy (spelling, obviously) would be worth a shot. I'm thinking a legit 8 man, or another 7. Then again, i would never say no to a test class THP.

Juan Smith is a blindside, it is just that in Saffa land they number their flankers differently than they way we do. They do it a little bit in France as well.

I would love it if we poached a world class lock like Pascal Pape or someone other French monster.

I agree with Noddy.

I would also be happy to not get one at all next year and hold of until 2012 after the RWC when the player makert is flooded with possible high name recruits.

third hooker would be Albert Anae I reckon?

third scrummie Matt Lucas?

I don't think the young Lucas is ready to be in a Super squad just yet. Maybe in a couple of years time. I've seen him play 1 colts game this year and while he was good he wasn't at the level that I would feel comfortable with putting him on the field against some real men in Super rugby.

Anae would be a good choice, he has real skills. He's a tough young frontrower/hooker and would be a valuable player to have on the bench. I think you may be a year early for Matt Lucas. By all accounts he has been making a good fist of prems when he has got on (every game this year from what I hear). We play them this week so I will be able to give a first hand account of how he goes

yeah, I was probably not thinking matty for a contract, but on the academy for another year and we just carry him should anything happen to Will or Benny L. Even then you might sit Grasso or Hamlin on the bench.

i havnet honestly seen anything to indicate that Albert Anae would make a good hooker...

maybe later this year we could see a Sunnybank frontrow of Edwards - Anae - PAE/Holmes

They are my fears as well.

Albert is a fantastic player and should be in the squad next year regardless in my opinion, however to my understanding it was only an academy experiment to try him at hooker and I don't think he has really played many minutes there. If that is the case than it would be very risky to have him as the third hooker, as we saw with the force this year - although I wouldn't mind snaffling another Nathan Charles but I am getting off topic.

We will need another experienced halfback to play out the season - Mckibbin would be handy, don't know how we stuffed that one up.

As far as out forwards go we are going to miss Braid and Weekes terribly, and although I don't rate Guy Sheppardson at all and Timani is even more unfinished than Higginbum I guess they could add some grunt if they do make it this way. I think in the future it would be of great benefit to QLD rugby to recruit a world class northern hemisphere tight 5 player just to show some of these lads what is required.
