If it's down to the Broadcasters we "should" be safe I reckon.

Fox probably wouldn't be happy with a reduction in Australian derbies, and I can't see a way to get rid of us (or any other Aussie team for that matter) without reducing that amount, or maybe maintaining it at best.
I am leaning towards a 3-conference model, though I don't know how the Jaguares can easily fit into the NZ conference (travel).

In his article, http://www.theaustralian.com.au/spo...e/news-story/5bcb8b0ae1d16ab1d252bbcf6e020ec3 Wayne Smith claims that "it’s fair to say the Rebels’ season will actually open for real with their home match against the Waratahs in a fortnight," which implies that Rebels can not match the standard of international teams, especially NZ teams who are in a different league, in which case, is he subtly implying that we shouldn't be in the competition?

watched the Rebels forwards having extra line out practice this morning and boy, don't they need it !
a few observations
Dom Day taking part :))) , no Smith, McMahon, Jeffries:)(),Toolis, Leota.
Lots of work taking ball off the top
One young second row face i didn't recognise
and finally Jordy cant jump and catch at the same time !

Smith, Toolis, McMahon expected.

Disappointing re Jeffries and Leota.

I really really hope TT has learned his lesson and will start Cummins, Retallick and Timani and bring Day (if fit) off the bench with one of Colby and Jordy.

We can't afford an undersized forward pack given the form and ability of backline.

Retallick and Cummins looked the most reliable this morning, didn't see any throws to Timani. i agree we should pick the best second rowers to play there. Mafi, Timani and one of Reid, Faing'a and Schatz to start in the backrow.
ps i didnt expect to see Leota yet. Whats actually up with Jeffries ?

Leota was more that last Saturday, down at Box Hill, I'd seen someone around Robs' Height, haircut and Complexion from a distance, with a heavily taped Knee and Shoulder (both of the major injuries he's had?) running around quite freely with what looked like the U20s.

As a consequence, I'd held out a slim hope of him being back for maybe the U20s round 5 and final.

I'd go Colby to miss out. He's keen invisible this year. Please tell me JGB was refining his water bottle holding technique?

So, with R92 and Stade merging for next season, think a few players might be looking for a new home.

Should I hold out any hope we might get Pyle and PAE back home?

Sign Carter as a Marquee as well ;) add Nakarawa to that as we need a good lock.

Will get the crowd numbers up.

Presumably, anyone on a contract ending this year is gone from this merger, unless the Super Club is willing to cop substantial financial losses in the form of buyouts.

Players that are probably 'on the table' (hypothetically signable) for the Rebels -
  • Hugh Pyle - take an outside punt on making the WC squad mate!
  • Will Genia - come live in Aus, play the WC, then chase dollars after
  • Paul Alo-Emile - Kepu is rusted on, but a lot can happen before the WC. The man is old.
  • Waisea Nayacalevu - played his breakout season in Melbourne Club Football, has strong connections here. Why he wasn't signed to be the first 'Sefa' I'll never know. The Rebels' Fijian clique may help this, though I understand they are from very different parts of Fiji.
Outside chances -
  • Pat Sio - What is he up to? He was at Stade but he isn't listed there on wiki and the online articles are vague.
  • Kiwi players - would be far from the only Kiwis to settle in Melbourne because they've got family here and life prospects post-football are good.

Was Nayacalevu not already capped by Fiji Sevens during his breakout season? AFAIK, he had a very good first season or two, but then went home during/before the 2012 season to play in a local Sevens tournament, which saw him got World Series caps and then Full XVs caps in the same year as the one he dominated locally.

Stade Francais players are definitely the best targets though, more Aussies, and the merger seems to be led by Racing.
