Does anyone else have the impression that Sydney's rugby intellectuals are starting to push the case to shaft the Rebels?

I haven't noticed that myself Mr W, but going back over some articles can't deny Rebels pics in some of those reports.

I honestly cant see it happening though (cutting the Rebels).

It's interesting how quickly the tide turned from anti-Force to anti-Rebels, even the G&G podcast is guilty (even if they like to make jokes about it).

I suppose the thing going for the Force is they knew they were under siege and prepared accordingly. Whereas the Rebels probably didn't.

Just about all of the negative tripe/pro-dumping articles in the SMH lately have a prominent Rebels photo. As far as I can tell they haven't written any assassination pieces about the Force or Brumbies, like the one by Paxinos last week. They're now running a poll on which team to cut.

It was the Force for the previous 6 months, now us because we have played 2 bad games (1 against the defending champions, away from home). Despite winning 5/6 aus games last year and having our two best finishes and our injury toll has been like no other team in Aus so far.

The Force have shown an upturn in fortunes since the start of the NRC and the Brumbies have too much media influence with the old boys. If anything all 3 teams on the chopping board should be united as ever pushing for each other survival, however given the nature of Australian rugby politics its turned into a cat fight.

Btw 16 teams makes no sense. That leaves an inability to have conferences (16 doesn't go into 3 and you can't do 4 conferences as NZ would have 5 teams). In a round robin format you'd have certain teams having 7 homes games others 8. Its gotta be 3x6 or 3x5

^^^Nearly identical to what I was writing,

Last 3 years the Force won 14 games, the Rebels 18. They went over a year with out a win at home.

Absolutely!

I suspect that makes perfect sense from a Kiwi perspective. 16 teams, everybody plays everybody else once for a 15 round competition. The Saffas might even go for something like that.

Well we can always hope Fox sports says no, we want 5 Australian teams. A breach in the TV right contract would send the ARU broke so there is no way to argue with them.

The best thing here would be Fox says no go on the new format, but ARU get voted against at SANZAAR. Ah that'd spice things up.

I think the likely outcome there would be to continue as is until the contract expires.

Kiwis sort of don't like the format of the conferences, Saffas really hate it. That's why we didn't the 3X6 Conferences in the first place.

Because, for example, Canterbury rugby has strong ties to the Crusaders and is probably their building block (not discounting Tasman), BUT the Bulls (Super) are literally the Blue Blues (Curry Cup), minus some Boks. They don't want to be dishing up Bulls V Lions 3-4 times a year.

Did TT personally offend you? I mean I won't defend the bloke's 2017 results, but on my entire time participating in and reading this forum it's just constant attacks from you. This is over years.

Highlights include -
  • Constantly saying you dislike his tactics, signings, etc.
  • You noting he's never been a successful coach (which I don't believe to be true)
  • You saying he only got the Rebels role because it financially suited the ARU
Either you're an insider, or you're just projecting a whole lot of cognative bias. For all we know Veinu would have been terrible if he stayed at the Rebels. He wouldn't be the first guy to look good in the NRC or the English Premiership but terrible in Super rugby.

I very much suspect that in a different context TT would probably do well as a coach. Munster being the optimal example, where he's the 2nd most successful coach of the professional era.

Sorry Amirite, but I have to agree with KevinO and wonder why you are so affronted by his opinions? In no context has TT (or as I refer to him Napoleon) been the type of coach I would want to build young players . And I am not an insider, but I have heard the way he blasts the boys behind closed doors (that means I was outside the door and heard his abuse) and I think its garbage to think that would motivate these young players, and Napoleon, as an ex teacher should know that these players will just shut down to shut him out, which is precisely what they are doing. He is divisive and its his way of the highway ergo why so many good guys have gone.
His tactics are weak, his signings are sometimes stupid and his success as a coach over five years at the rebels has to be questioned. Even great coaches have dog years, but five??? No.

It's quite amusing how things swing. Since about lunch time today Iv noticed a swing towards the brumbies. No need for anyone to throw people under the bus, all we can do is sit back and hope the right decision is made.

Wonders will never cease. Think they might have finally caught wind that Melbourne might lose the Rebels, and now feel compelled to write about it.

The other side battle seems to be between the media outlets.

In one corner, you have the Fairfax journalists (mainly, Georgie and Tom). I think they haven't' been too kind to the Rebels, and probably favour them on the chopping block. They've focused more on recent performance, and the fact the Rebels have been more successful.

On the other side, you've got your news corp journos (Patyo, Panda, and the HS guy) who seems to point the trigger at the Force/Ponies. Their discussion seems to focus more on the business element, as opposed to recent on-field performance. Tends to indicate they feel it's more a business/potential decision, as opposed to a nostalgic reason.

Also remember, News corp are far more connected to the FoxSports way of thinking, being from the same parent company. My straw clutching, but it's something.

Before you ask, no I have no empirical evidence, just instinct. Take a read back through their articles, prove me wrong.

Just another angle on this whole sorry mess...

and Imperium firing a shot over the bows of the ARU

The cannons have been ringing for the last few weeks now.

Lot to be learned from being proactive with the media, especially when your team has its back to the wall.

Selfish as it may be, I'm more than happy for Coxy and his lot to make us the hardest side to kill.

Until our survival is ARU guaranteed, I'm not thinking any further than that, but at somepoint, I'd like to look at who we'd pick up from a dead side.
