thats what, in theory, they have done with angus roberts and bryce hegarty both touted as future 10's.

roberts showed some glimpses in a couple of early games, but it is clearly a big step from shute shield to super. although clearly a popular ploy amongst coaches these days and i can see the rationale of having 2 playmakers and someone to counter attack from the back, the tooing and froing from 15 to 10 doesn't help develop the game management skills necessary in a good flyhalf, witness the difference dan carter made when he came on last weekend

I think that Hegarty and Roberts both have the ability to get there, but will take time. Roko can play 10 as well.

Harris would be totally the wrong player IMHO. You need someone who can pass and kick both directions out of hand.

Lance could maybe be the man for the job, but like Harris, he is better at 12 or 15.

At this stage it is hard to know. I would like to see Hegarty get a few chances as starting 10 to sort out if he is worth keeping on.

I suggested Sam Lane earlier in the year but I have yet to see any of his games for Manly this season so I don't know what sort of form he is in.

The U20's team will give some indication as to the standard of the young blokes running round. It is also worth keeping an eye on the Argentinian U20's as well. And of course the Shute Shield and Brisbane Premier comp are always worth keeping an eye on.

I think the important thing for the rebels is that they cast their net wide and keep as many potential candidate in the loop as possible. Just signing the Sydney Uni flyhalf and hoping he can cut it at the top is not a viable strategy.

Watching Hegarty play full back for Powerhouse in round 1, kicking game is no where near good enough at the moment to even play club rugby at 10 let alone attempt a higher level.

His a lot more suited to Full back.

I was in and out of Canberra last year and went to watch games when I could, the Vikings had a very good 10, good skills and footwork, I don't know his name he was a little islander fellow, might be worth a look at

If inwas hill i would get rid of sidey move JOC (James O'Connor) to 12 and bring beale in at 10 leave the rest. Now thats a good backline.

English is actually a center as well, would not mind seeing him step into 12 to see if his passing game is good. His footwork against the Saders was pretty good.

I have no problems with JOC (James O'Connor) at flyhalf, or Beale for that matter. JOC (James O'Connor) has been one of the best performing flyhalves on individual stats, including try assists, and in my opinion would be legendary outside Genia. His metres, kicks, errors, and defense make him one of the most rounded players at either ten or fullback. but he has players around him who need to step up. Inman has stepped up but Sidey and Phipps need to take a good look at themselves. Sidey needs to believe in himself more and Phipps needs to fix his atrocious service. I actually think both of them can do that. But I haven't seen it.

Right now I think JOC (James O'Connor) will be selected as Wallabies flyhalf. He has made more runs than Quade, but not overly so, has more try assists, more linebreaks, more metres run, is better with the boot imo, and is a far far better tackler. His passing is weaker and its there Quade outshines him (and everyone else) until he throws interceptable passes. JOC (James O'Connor) has the edge, like Dagg, of actually improving when things get tough. Despite peoples gut feel, my opinion is the data shows JOC (James O'Connor) as one of the best performing tens in Super Rugby, but I allow I haven't seen any comprehensive data, just the rugby stats data, data which has no ability to distinguish good passes from bad, inevitable turnovers from errors, and so on.

Now before the reds fanatics get up in arms, I should add Quade is capable of being a LOT better than JOC (James O'Connor), and has shown good signs in recent games, but he will need to keep improving to displace JOC (James O'Connor) for the Lions tests. Right now the truth is he has one of the highest error rates of any ten or fullback for the season so far (penalties, turnovers, missed tackles) and not overly flash run metres, kick metres, line breaks or try assists. Thats very bad juju going into a Lions series.

All I want is for the Rebels to keep improving their scrum and building their combinations. Do we have the right coach for scrummaging and lineouts? Our locks and loosies are starting to cook, and our props are getting there but maybe aren't getting the driving support they need from our locks and loosies?

Fair. I still think guys like him are who we should be chasing though.

Ath, good post - I don't entirely agree, but it's a good post. For me where JOC (James O'Connor) loses out to Quade is the intangibles, his stats might turn out slightly better but he rarely if ever gets the backline running as well as Cooper does. He's not helped in the slightest by having to play behind Phipps though. I can't think of a single reason at the moment why Phipps keeps getting started week after week.
