PAE has been very good for us so far. He had a shocker yesterday but that'll happen. Got absolutely no help from Jones in the scrum either.

There has to be some chat about Phipps now. I'd love to know what it is that gets him selected week after week after week. Either he's an absolute beast in training, or the coaches are looking at a completely different game to me/have access to entirely different information. He kills so many attacking raids with terrible passing, poor decisions or just by being generally slow to clear the ball. I'm sure one of the reasons JOC (James O'Connor) has been playing so deep at flyhalf is to give himself a bit of a buffer with Phipps' pass. We become noticably flatter and faster when Stirzaker comes on.

Is there something I'm missing? I've heard it mentioned that he does a lot of defensive organisation, but then our defence has been largely rubbish for three seasons now so I'm not sure that's a good enough reason to keep him around. Is he experienced? Sure. But again, what's that really worth? If anyone can come up with a compelling reason for him to keep starting I'd love to hear it.

i thought the substitutes were odd
weekes was playing well and still going strong as far as i could tell. ditto neville and saffy.
i would've thought maybe take saffy off for jones, but keep the pure lockes on the field as they were doing a good job
phipps should be on the bench next week. hearing justin marshall laugh at him summed it all up.

strzacker's passing is much much better.

Inman needs a quality 12 and he will absolutely dominate. he is turning into an excellent player. incredible tackling by him and saffy all day.

Now if Beale was to come back, hypothetically speaking, we could see a backline of

Stirzacker
Beale
Vuna
JOC (James O'Connor)
Inman
Situati/English/Mitchell
Woodward

Which would be by far the best backline we've ever put out.

that horrid kick aside, woodward was outstanding. he, JOC (James O'Connor), Inman and Vuna were generating quality attacking opportunities from all over the park...but particularly he and JOC (James O'Connor).
if beale comes back and plays 10, suddenly we have 3 very skilled and creative attacking minds in our backline.

i now really want to see a more quality player at 12. Mitchell is an improvement on Sidey, but if we can bring beale off the bench (discipline reasons) to slot in at 10, push JOC (James O'Connor) to 12 - we can have a very potent backline.

the chiefs have an excellent backline and Sidey will not cut it against Nanai williams and possibly kahui.

i was 90% very impressed with the rebels yesterday - they were quality and back to where they were pre south african tour - if not better.

Agree , they have caved into pressure from the ARU and to a desperate coach looking after the interests of his record Instead of team culture. True to his normal form.

Just noticed that unlike his brother, Lopeti is a loose forward. Still makes it interesting for Jones.

Lopeti is a massive unit ,specialist 8 , who is currently shredding the Shute Shield for Southern Districts. Really could have a similar impact for the Rebels that Fotu has for the Brums and Radeke has had in the past for the Reds.

Competition for spots is a good thing, it should keep them all on their toes if managed correctly.

Timani is still only 19 and will probably be a longer-term development project.

I was at the Rising Rebels game on the weekend and while there was a pretty small crowd, (maybe 100 people tops), it was a really fun game to watch.

Obviously there has been talk about Alex Rockabaro being too slight for super rugby, but he played a cracker of a game. As did Chris Thompson and to a slightly lesser degree, Jordy Reid.

But holy hell, there were some fantastic young kids running around I have never heard of, not just with the RR but also the Country NSW lads. It would be interesting to know if any of the NSW kids are linked with the Tahs.

I had never heard of Billy Valetini (sp?), a young guy from Halequins, but I nearly shat myself at the skills that kid has. 17 years old, built like a brick shithouse and runs faster than an arctic southerly. Went over for a double and could have had 2 more. I might be coming late to the party but this kid is going places.

All in all, good fun. Not often you get to stand at a suburban ground on a Saturday night in Melbourne and have a beer while discussing the finer points of the game with guys like Matt Tink and Stirling Mortlock.

Was there as well. Great night and more like 500 than 100!
Billy is something special. Just hope somebody like Stirlo takes an interest in him and keeps his head together. Also really liked Bryces game, hope the Rebels persevere with him.

Well, I did enjoy the club bar for several hours. I would never have thought there was 500 there, but the socialising may have impacted my judgement a bit. :D

I was talking to a few of Billy's Quins team-mates during and after the game and when I started getting all excited at the kids skills, they told me he does that week in and week out. Amazing stuff.
