Queensland Reds 2025

Unfortunately the last couple of weeks have proven that if we don’t respect to football, there is no chance of winning this competition! Also the Force and Crusaders seemed to be picking the plays. Looks very similar to last seasons play book. We might need to adjust a few things or we could see further results like today. Hoping for a far more polished performance against the Waratahs.

If we learnt to hold the ball into contact rather than trying to throw amazing one in a million passes would make a difference.

Two things. Reds can and will be fine if they settle it down just a bit. Not much as the up pace footy and interplay is their strength but just a bit if it can be done. Defence needs to be the reset though. Nobody wins comps playing the you score 29 ill score 30. Every mistake is game changing when doing that.

In regards to the picking the plays comment. I only saw about 30 mins of this game and all I saw was T Shape over and over again in attack which most coaches understand these days in High School footy. Hit the forward runner with a guy to his left and right for a pop pass with an out option at the back. Defences can learn to shoot out at the ball receiver and force them to take the hit up for no gain and it negates the out option or forces a low percentage offload. Reds have the best hands amongst forwards but it's still going to hit the deck a few times. They'll stick with it because it naturally opens space for Tate next to the ruck and their 2/3 on the season.

On positive for the Reds, I went for a walk this morning and it looks like Ballymore & the NRTC has survived the flooding so far; Enoggera Creek surged overnight and rose a couple of meters but has been receding since. Plenty of broken branches and trees are looking a little worse for wear around Ballymore, though.

I’m really liking what I’m seeing from the Red forwards. The running lines, small footwork efforts, short passing and offloads are a real strength and the coaching staff deserve credit for embedding this in the game plan. The set piece has also been very serviceable.

There are some issues with the last 10% of accuracy. We’re throwing a few too many speculative offloads (even real guns at it like Wilson are guilty of it). We also probably need some variation in our shapes and tactics because I agree that some teams have started to work it out.

I think when we get LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto), Paisami, Flook and Campbell back we have potential to go deep. Just remains to be seen if we’ll have the polish to be GF contenders

Aubrey was never anything but underwhelming from what I saw at club and super level. Not clear yet whether Murray is an upgrade though.
Fair comments but he's only 22 and felt like he'd been around for a while so really the judgement is being made on a player who was 20 at the time.... Would have been good to see him play in a team with a strong pack and established halves.

is a fast and keen player but his error rate is pretty high, and it’s costing the reds points on both sides of the ball.

It wouldn’t have been the right thing to do to hold onto Grealy but we’re missing him with Jock out.
I'd add Jordan P to who we are missing. I know his fullback play wasn't as safe as Jock, but he could play there and make less mistakes than Murray. I'll beat everyone to it and admit Jordan probably would have been injured by now as well. I hope Murray's mistakes were from trying too hard at his old home ground.

The keys are always in the last place you look. And the speculative offloads are great until the last one goes astray. :)

I agree with you Hammer. The forwards especially, have some great little passes and footwork going but some of the team are getting a little too excited and pushing some ridiculous ones. Hopefully experience will see them make better choices. I think the tight 5 were all smart in holding onto the ball after their breaks yesterday ( may have missed one of their turnovers but generally they were good). The other ten have to calm down.

Wilson, who has great hands, also has the worst habit of pushing passes. The one for Daugunu's try paid off (after he scooped it off the ground); the other three not so much. I think Murray and JYD (I'm a huge fan) will also not enjoy the video review.

Last point - Dr O'Keefe should concentrate on his medical work. Watching him ref is like being a NSW'men watching Barry Gommersall.

I have never seen him at club level but there was nothing about him that made me think he was suited to Super level. I have never understood the love for him.

That being said, I doubt he would be worse than Murray

I guess it's comparing players who QLD could have. Jordy and Mac both signed elsewhere but Aubrey was seemingly let walk when he has only gone to a Q Cup side and not an NRL side that has sent him down.

Picked up Mason Gordon but he's one I have never seen do anything to show he's a Super Rugby player. Is he fit or injured?

He was concussed at training just before the Moana game. Unless he's still getting symptoms or something else has happened he should have been available vs crusaders

I think Murray is a running disaster at 15. The guy seems to be mistake ridden - how many Reds moves fail when the ball gets to him.
Especially against the Force when with an open line in front of him he drops the ball cold, which fortunately did not cost us the game.
He is not at professional level, its as simple as that.
Hard words, but Super Pacific is a hard competition.

Yeh Murray is a bit concerning. The Crusaders aren't exactly known for just letting great players walk away. There is a reason they've got such a good success rate in Super Rugby over the years, their squad depth has been so good.

Was probably a red flag that the Saders gave him a couple of games to win a contract and still let him walk.
