Queensland Reds 2025

I really like Blyth and think he has a fair bit to offer Australian Rugby, he is just clearly sitting down the pecking order with the logjam at the Reds.

If LSL (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) (Lukhan Salakaia-Loto) is back and Blyth is likely to drop out of the squad, he might be the kind of player who should be loaned to the Waratahs given their issues at lock.
Moving forward, Force could use him to replace Carter but more likely the Brumbies could also use him to replace Neville (contract ends this year), and would be a starter with Frost over Shaw. Even more important with Hooper leaving.

I wouldn't be starting Blyth over Shaw. That kid is building.

So basically what we are saying is he would be better off at any other team than the one he's currently at?
Blyth has played every game and has been strong off the bench whenever he has come on. With injuries and rating players he is likely to play at least half of the remaining games.

Next year maybe things change - or maybe he backs himself to maintain his spot.

Can't teach height. I'd like to think the Reds would be keeping Blyth in the rotation.

I don't get the Blyth hate - he's one of my favorite players on our team!

Genuinely loves being out there and gives his all every match. One of those players who won't always appear on the highlight reel but gets stuck in & does his job well. Comes across as one of those squad members who help set the standard & build everyone up.

Sure, but he has been a starting Super Rugby lock when fit since 2019(?). 50 games worth

Averaging 20 minutes at the back end of games is great for the Reds, but it probably means his Wallaby ambitions are over, his contract offer for next year is going to be a lot lower, and he would improve just about every other team on their roster.

If Blyth wants to leave it will obviously come down to cash.

I reckon he's head and shoulders above Vest (pun intended) but you'd think Vest asking price to keep in the squad would be significantly less as he won't have the same level of interest from other teams.

No hate per se - just reading the tea leaves.

Outside of rotation and injury he's the forth string lock on that roster

He's absolutely going to be hot property on the player market for next year, there aren't a lot of experienced locks going around and it's rare for an Australian team to have a complete set. That's not really an argument for a preemptive move though, not unless he really wants a release, but there's no indication that's the case.

Under current arrangements, he's staying exactly where he is - but I reckon this is where full centralisation might give a better outcome. Having Wallaby locks miss selection because of too many players in front of them is such a waste of resources

The same could be said about wallaby props missing the 23, but no one is talking about moving Kailea to the Force to cover their losses at prop, something that would probably be more immediately beneficial for both the player and the recieving side.

We're in a weird space thanks to the demise of the Rebels and a reduction to 4 teams. Centralisation will probably help in the future (though player trades in contract are not new), but it needs to largely happen in the off season (outside of major injury crises), anything else is not great for the credibility of the competition. It's also not as simple as just moving players around the board at will, they have plenty of say in where they want to be, and attempting to force them to specific teams will likely see them leave at the end of their contract. Teams also need to know they can plan for the future in building their squads out and that they won't have RA come in over the top to raid their squads to paper over cracks and mistakes elsewhere.

The problems we have is that there aren't nearly enough true tall timber 2nd rowers outside of Frost and Blythe. Everyone else is in the 195cm area really and the next crop coming through are the same, although good footballers, they are either shortish for their job or too light.
I think it was just hope from Schmidt that there was something more there and thats why he got a gold jersey. Good luck to him if he gets a solid offer from Japan.

I agree - he’s got proper size, good line out option and some of his tackles and clean outs are brutal. Lock with a bit of a nasty streak which is what everyone claims to want.

If he continues to develop his carrying game a bit more (which it looks like he is, 2 tries this season in the tight) I think people will start taking a bit more notice - either that or start wearing red headgear.

Honestly, he reminds me of Van Humphries. Always up for getting in the face of the opposition and never one to let his team mates down. The 4 tall timbers we have all compliment one another and also bring their own slight points of differences.
