Queensland Reds 2025

Have to say I’ve been very happy with the Queenslanders at test level. By and large they are all going well IMO.

Probably the only issue is Daugunu’s red card. I thought he was playing well prior to that.

Otherwise I thought Tate & Wilson played really well last night. McReight has been superb. Faessler solid and Nasser also going well. Blyth has been tradesman like - but seems to be making a good fist if it. Might get pushed out of the next 23 but then again I think his strength and accuracy could be even more valuable against the Boks and ABs. Hunter has copped a bit of criticism but has been one of our best defenders each game. Hodgman & Nonggorr not really many minutes so not much to judge them on but congrats to Hodgman for being the 4th player capped for the ABs & Wallabies.

I’ve just put the review of the Tahs players up on our thread if you want to jump over and read that.

6 New Reds!
I might be getting excited about nothing as maybe it just means they played on Friday and doesn’t mean they will play for the Reds again.

It's not about signings, it's just that they all got their first Reds cap. That said Canham, Gibbon, Anderson and Pakeho are all already signed in one way or another.

I can't see Cartwright picking up a contract just yet (don't really need 4 halfbacks in the squad) but Mason is a chance, particularly if both Creighton and Grealy are departing.

Hopefully a side benefit of Mason’s potential signing is he carves it up for QLD, has an absolute blast which convinces Carter to come join him in 2 years after kicking practice at the Goldie.
That would be great, the though I think he's still probably up against it getting a Reds contract for next year. Probably needs all three of Creighton, Grealy and Petaia to move on, and even then O'Connors return to form may be enough to block him. Still it's great they're looking at him and giving him an opportunity to show something.

There's probably a space for him in just about every other super side (not the tahs if they sign Creighton though), high level game time is his best way to get it.

I doubt O'Connor is stopping the Reds from signing Gordon at this stage.

It's more the combination of O'Connor and a lot of fullback cover throughout the squad. Part of that also comes down to what happens with cap space and squad sizes next year, but I'm not sure they'll rush to carry more than 3 10s in the squad next year, not with two of them so young.

Absolutely.

“a lot off fullback cover” - that’s an interesting statement - outside of Campbell all we seem to have at 15 is cover - I actually see 15 as a weak spot in the squad. We’ve been carrying a fair few outside backs - none of whom have really stepped up to demand selection or emerge as a proper 15

Aubrey is a fullback who covers wing to get on the field for the Reds.

Assuming Petaia and Grealy go we still have Campbell starting and Annan and Aubrey have both played plenty of fullback. I think half the reason they've been shifted away from the position is the number of options we've had there. I don't think Mason represents a significant upgrade over Annan, though I would probably take him over Aubrey as a 15. Outside of them I expect McLauhglin-Phillips will spend some time there (at least from the bench) over the next season or two as they look to make more use of him and Will McCulloch is a good prospect coming through the 20s. O'Connor also covers 15 in a pinch.

None of this is to say I'd be upset if we signed Mason Gordon or that we shouldn't do it, just that I don't see there being a case for much more than a base contract to be offered and there are probably a few more dominoes to fall before that can be sorted.

With Petaia leaving it would be good to see Aubrey get some decent minutes at 15.

he seems on the short side of things for a 15… isn’t he?

Gordon needs to prove himself and Les Kiss will give him an opportunity to do that.
