I would say Cooper has earned the right to wear the Wallaby 10. He is out performing his competitors. It is as simple as that.

Agree. His defence is still atrocious but if the All Blacks could come up with strategies to account for Mehrtens' deficiencies there; so Deans could for Cooper - in fact he could just get out his old notes on Merhts.

The Fiji game doesn't really count. Let's see how he goes against the Poms. They will target him.

The only disclaimers to this are if Deans discounts the effect he has in the Super14 compared to the effect he expects him to have against elite defenders in 3N, and how his flyhalf game fits in with the likely Wobbly strategy.

Oz backs have been too vanilla for too long, the Giteau quest for the outside break whilst playing 10 is old hat. Let's make a bold stroke against the Poms and see how it goes. If it doesn't go well - Plan B.

Quade's defence can be pretty unpredictable. Some times he can make great tackles, and get physical, and do the try saving tackle like he did on JP Pietersen on the weekend. But then at least once every game he gets the floppy arm syndrome, and fails to grab hold of anyone.

EPL is the English Premier League(ie soccer/football)

thanks. let's try again.

err, over many years and in how many tests and in how many S12/14, T14, Guinness Premiership, Heineken Cup and NZ Provincial Championship games has Andrew Mehrtens played?

.... and is still hidden in defence.

Deans may get the best of both worlds here with his duel playmaker preferences and a dynamic running 10 in the same set up.

Imagine how good an ANZAC or Ba ba's team would be with Nonu running off him at pace.

I think Cooper is the best offloader of the ball I've ever seen in union.

Thats a big call, but it has an element of truth, the last 10 years, I haven't seen anyone like it. I think he is probably one of the best offloader's to play the game.

Define 'offloader'.

If it is offloader in heavy contact, then the likes of TPN are better.

Cooper does however get the arms free very often.

Getting rid of the ball when partially or fully tackled..or when hitting the ground.

Cliffy Palu is good as well.

Good. Fire away Cyco. Do you agree/disgree?
I predicted only that there would be contention - not from me necessarily. I agree he is very, very good at putting a man in space. There are other claimants. Long ball - Larkham was just about peerless, and for quite some time; Mark Ella was extremely good at short offloads. Lloyd Walker also was a master - sure he didn't play a lot of Tests but had beautiful "soft" hands to put runners in gaps.
Cooper could prove to be as good, if not better than all - in time.

Thats what I would say. You can narrow Quade down to the last 4 months though. Given his off field issues, he could of gone the other way. I like the way he has matured and take my hat off to him and all those involved.

Matt Taylor has done a great job as defensive coach.
The Reds could attack last year but went to sleep in defence.
The improvement has been 3 fold:
1)Defence
2)Attitude
5)And playing out 80minutes
