who will get first crack at flyhalf in the trails of quade is out.

benny lucas and jono lance on the bench?

or is lucas considered too small for flyhalf?
He might be but he is a tough little rooster and will do the job. Talk of QC (Quade Cooper)'s omission is premature however, both these guys, and Kingi, are options, as is Hynes as a left field call. The other guy who would do a reliable job is Ant Fainga'a, fantastic defender.

Saw Lance at 7's carnival on Gold Coast - lots of skills BUT hell-slow - reckon a 1 legged horse would beat him over 50 metres

Never ever crossed my mind that he might be too slow, but you could be right Straightshooter - will have to watch for that. Don't know that he is any slower than Matt To'omua and he may have been made to look pedestrian because of the number of speedy guys picked to play sevens.

Another guy who might make the big leap this year is Jake Schaatz. He will still be a teenager for the entire S14 season next year but has put on some size and has a lot of grunt.

Its going to be a interesting contest next year in the front row, i expect Holmes to return to form, whilst Ben Daley really looks like a future wallaby. Then on the tighhead sight Dayna and Weeks are are going to have a good tussle, at least the scrummaging practices should be good sessions.

I would say jack kennedy is the prop most in danger of losing his spot to one of the academy guns, but in saying that he is probably the only one who can play both sides of the scrum. I am probably being too harsh because he is very young and was a part of the brumbies setup who are usually pretty good judges. the whole equation will be very interesting because all of those academy props will be banging on the door for contracts by seasons end. lawrie weeks looks the goods to me, id say link would have in training to play both sides.

I'm thinking Dayna Edwards will struggle if he doesn't pick up his fitness and involvement. Slipper and Anae both went well at U 20's last year so will apply pressure to the top squad guys.

Slipper could be in for a shot, but Anae is struggling in the strenght and fitness side of the house from what i hear, his still only a young bloke so maybe 2011 might be his year

i actually dont know much of anything on the rest of the squad, there are a few players that i have links to and in turn receive snippets on every now and then, but thats about it.

I dont even know what the story is with Toua in 2010, is he still in the Academy or is he out of the Reds set up altogether?

I like Lucas he's very quick & a great cover defender I still think he should be back up halfback for the Wallabies he played most of last season injured with cracked ribs so it seemed like he had 2nd season syndrome.

If I was Lucas I'd be linking myself to the Rebels in 2011 if he want's to take part in the RWC.

I concur!
For me with genia bein a great half back means we should put lucas at full back, he can kick run pass, id give him a shot, as not sure we got any one else.

I asked Link via twitter:

"@Ewen_McKenzie Great news. Will try to get to Lismore for the trail. Are there plans to replace McLindon in the full time squad Link?"

and he responded:

"Ewen_McKenzie

@RugbyNoddy we have some very interesting players in the academy with the likes of Toua and Tapuai so I will be looking there first"

good initiative noddy and that's great news.. plus i also think as the early poster suggested that lucas could make a good fullback, but I would prefer toua.

I was told he is still with the Reds next season in the top squad. He should be able to make the match day 22 if fit. He is a player with plenty of potential although needs to put on a bit more size to be able to compete with the bigger boys in the Super 14.

I'm looking forward to seeing Luke Morahan play this year. He has always been one player I have really rated, even coming through the schoolboy ranks. He is very quick and pretty elusive for a bloke his size.

Anyone who rated Brendan Moon needs to be excited by this guy. You heard it first from Speccy!

Good on you Speckie.

Can't say I've seen a lot of Luke from Sydney. I went to Canberra for the 2007 Schools tournament and was looking forward to seeing him play as I had heard a lot about him. But he had a quiet week, at best, and it was the other Qld winger, Joseph Tomane, who was the best winger of the week, and the best player of the tournament that year in my opinion.

But the Melbourne Storm got him.

I saw Luke in 7's and his cameo on the EOYT.

I hope he lives up to the comments people are making about him. I think that Queensland are going to have a lot of good wingers coming through in a year or two. Most of the best schools wingers in the last 3 years have been from Queensland.

Quite right Lee.

Morahan and Tomane from 2007, Price in 2008 and Situata and Sautia (or is it Feaui?) all looked like potential S14 players as schoolboys, and the last one named will still be at school next year!

Tomane has already crossed over but I cant see the Reds hanging on to all of the others.
