Cat pretty much nailed it, UQRFC doesn't offer anything like these numbers to its players. The scholarships are handed out by UQ Sport (http://www.uqsport.com.au/scholarships) with 6 of the 36 handed out by them last year going to Rugby players. Like Cat said there is also a major Kings College one and 2 minor UQ Rugby Academy Scholarships offered through the College as well. On top of these there is now the Halley Appleby Scholarship offered to a young apprentice or trainee. A number of years ago, when we had a very green player group, the club offered 1/2 Scholarships to older players wanting to go back to Uni in an attempt to get more experienced players at the club... I don't think these are still offered.
UQRFC hasn't modelled itself on Syd Uni... there are some ideas the club has embraced since Buildcorp came on board and communication between the clubs came a bit easier. Mainly to do with involving the club with the University more which has been very beneficial.
I've been involved with the club for 14 years and from memory the colts have always been strong... there was one year I recall they were poor but apart from that they're usually the most successful group at the club. As to why? Well I believe there are plenty of factors. A strong club culture, success breeding success, off field culture/events, being associated with a uni is a strong drawing point for private school kids continuing their education and the academy draws the guys who are serious about improving their rugby.
Honestly I couldn't tell you any names... I just know that the prem grade & colt coaches are pretty excited about them.

There have definitely been ones in the past. However you would expect the overwhelming majority of them to go to UQRFC.

Not knowing the whole sporting side of UQ scholarships, I would only be making an educated guess, but I daresay that a potential scholarship candidate would have to have decent academic credentials as well. The university on a whole takes academic achievement pretty seriously. Although I have to shake my head at some of the honours candidates in certain disciplines, but that is a whole different story!
Purce and Cat_A do you guys have a figure of the number of players in the UQ Rugby Academy that receive a discount or the service for free? That is the service that UQ Rugby Club has the power over.

I couldn't give you a definitive answer to that, it has evolved quite a bit over the past 10 years or so. I recall it was free when I was involved with it but you had to be invited to join. Then it became open to anyone and there was a fee. Then I think the foundation sponsored certain players which usually consisted of covering 1/2 the cost. I don't know the current set up with it but as I said it has evolved and the academy players are at the club every day doing some sort of training. I believe they only accept certain players now as opposed to it being open to all.... probably due to demand and there being limited spots.

In recent times there has been a focus on partnering with UQ Sport to run school-holiday programs for 15-17yo and also kids holiday programs for 8-14yo boys and girls.

With the ARU Academy and the Reds wider training squad I don't think the Academy attracts the market (ie: numbers and "standard") it originally envisioned. Although I don't know complete numbers, the numbers I see training when I go to physio some afternoons seem to indicate that yes, they have limited spots & only accept certain players. As far as the formal scholarships there are a couple of UQ Rugby Academy scholarships available through the colleges that Purce mentioned. I'm not sure about more than that though.

Has anyone spied the club review conducted by the ARU, the report has been leaked to some Sydney journalists and the Shute shield clubs were published in the SMH.. I'd be interested to see the state of the Premier Grade clubs.

Meehan is in the Australia U20 Camp this week. Clubs that have players in the U20s will not see them until July around Round 13. They are only available for Rounds 2, 4 & 6 and only then if they are passed fit. They would have also been missing for training prior to these games.

Wow the weak get weaker & the strong get stronger. Can't really fault this Meehan kid choosing Sunnybank, they have a half decent oval, a talented team & a world class gym setup. Going to suck for some player who plays All year long does his part to get the team to the finals only to be dropped for some talented u20 or contracted Reds returning for the finals.
A reason I believe Tim Mosey might of come back to the Dogs, plays most of the year for the Premier Heavies only to lose out from a 1-22 jersey when the floodgates of representative players return to St Lucia to save the day.

I swear I thought he was a prop but the other day I saw him listed as hooker in a team list on a GAGR national vs QLD academy forum post.
Alternatively I believe Albert Anae was a hooker but did he not come on as a prop for Greg Holmes in the Brumbies game?

You're right on all accounts.
Anae is being converted to a prop and it all went pretty well. If he picks up a game or 2 at hooker he'd be a VERY handy Wallaby squad member next world cup.
Davis is converting to hooker but his lineouts are regarded to need much more work.
