I watched the first 60 mins of Uni v Sunnybank. Sunnybank were the better team in my eyes for the first half. They had most of the possession and territory but couldn't convert it into points. They also have an issue getting quick ball from the rucks giving Uni time to get their defensive line set. Uni broke out after about 20 mins and scored a try. On the stroke of half time Nigel Ah-Wong crossed the line for Sunnybank but dropped the ball trying to put it down. This was a telling point in the game as it seemed to wake Uni up and they had a fair bit of possession and territory in the early parts of the second half. They kicked a penalty goal and not long later scored a try.
I left at this stage as the jumping castle had closed down and the kids were going a bit feral but it was obvious that Uni would get up.
A few things that stood out to me:
Uni work really well in defense and they cover the holes quickly.
Uni are very good at slowing down ruck ball for the opposition.
For Sunnybank Rex Tapui and Geroge Blomfield were both very good.
The Sunnybank lineout didn't function too well

The Souths v Easts game was a bit of an arm wrestle until the last five minutes when Johnny Wilder scored the second of his tries. He and Toby White were quite outstanding for Easts in the backs. Toby is a big lump of a lad and playing at 13 was very strong in contact and made some telling line busts.

Souths actually took it to Easts and probably had more of the ball during the game. They let themselves down at crucial times with poor discipline and some poor ball handling. At one stage with the score at 13-5, Souths were pressing the Easts line and a grandstand finish looked likely. The Easts defence held out, Souths came up with an error, and Easts were able to get out of the red zone. Van Humphries was a dominant figure in the lineouts, as you might expect, and he spoiled a lot of Easts lineout ball. A long haired Brent Hamlin was at 10 for Souths and he had quite a strong game.

I heard Aiden Toua out for the season with a knee injury (other knee this time)... Big loss for Easts and QLD rugby if true. Can anyone confirm?

Confirmed. Unfourtunately. Quirk is with the U20's for a while as well. Players like Brandon, Bertini and Wilder have to keep playing well to make up for the losses of those two

Easts 22 defeated GPS 14 down at Yoku Park. Tough contest in the forwards and the Easts backline probably shaded the very youthful GPS backs. Matty Brandon kicked well and gave his side good direction and Toby White scored a magnificent individual try. He is having a great season so far.

Those Smith twins are pretty big humans but the Easts scrum was strong so I assume that the Tigers front row more than held their own.

Souths 33 drew with Wests 33 at Chipsy Wood. Free flowing open game with 5 tries each - a few too many basic errors though, in core skills and decision making. Wests converted try in the last play of the game to snatch the draw. Inside centre for Souths very strong ball runner.

Easts V Uni.. What a match. Easts kicked of and hit Uni with an intensity they did not expect. Scored within minutes. Much to Uni's credit they hit back straight away. It was a full on game with both teams working hard. 11 tries scored in all. 6 to Easts and 5 to Uni. Easts ended up winning by 6 points. Think the score was something like 33 to 27. Exciting game to watch.

Going pretty well this stage, I think after beating Brothers yesterday we near if not top of table. We actually have new fields/clubhouse etc next yearo that will be good and might help with getting in Prems at later date. It actually good to hear someone say they would like to see us there someday, get the impression QRU surely not keen on it.

I wasn't able to get to the East/Uni game but the reports I've got suggest it was a fantastic game. Very physical match with the smaller Easts pack matching a much larger Uni pack. Heard the captain Bertini was outstanding, as was prop McBride who got himself two meat pies. Was also told that White had another strong game in the centres and the young winger (not Wilder) got an opportunity to show his jet shoes. No bad players on both sides apparently.

Are Easts the real deal? Too early to say I'd suggest. The return game between these two will see a few Reds and U20's back for Uni, and only Quirk to come back for Easts. That will be the real measure for the Tigers. What I will say though, is that even though they are a young side, the nucleus of this team won the flag back in 2008 and they dont have a lot of rep players, so like Brothers, they have an outfit who all understand to a very big extent, how their teammates play. That's worth plenty. They will certainly be one of the chances come finals time.

Has Logan moved to the new location that's been discussed for a few years now? I'd also like to see them in Premier rugby sooner rather than later and from what I've heard in passing, the new home ground could be a major boost.

Eats v Brothers next week at Crosby Park will be another ball tearer I'd imagine. Doesn't get any easier for the Tigers.

Sunnybank has made the crossover successfully. If there is a decently sized player pool the QRU would be mad not to consider promoting a team that is based in the middle of strong league area.

You make a great point here Spectator both the 08 & 09 winning sides, Easts and Brothers respectively had very few rep players. It's about combinations and playing to the team strengths - both these sides did that whilst others with their share of rep players couldn't get to the same level. Champion teams not teams of champions..
