QLD GPS Rugby 2019

All over it

I think you are right-and at a very robust GPS Dir of Sports meeting last week -the same message was conveyed . From next year on there is great concern that it is simply a race for 3rd behind NC/TSS.

But really is that any different from tennis (BBC/BGS) or rowing (NC/TSS) or swimming (BGS/TSS)? Once gain the safety factor/mercy rule was mentioned
We cannot let our 100 year history become like NSW 6 team comp.Solutions?
Unfortunately, rugby dominance or dynasties will always be frowned upon harder than other non-contact sports as safety is not an issue. The onus lays on the other schools to build and continue striving for improvements. We shouldn’t place limitations on the dominant schools and programs if we are passionate about maintaining the brilliance of GPS Sport. If we look over the past 10 years, sports and various programs have far more one-sided competitions.

I heard 38-31 - Nudgee over Terrace

49-0 - BBC over Grammar

44-13 - Ippy over da Woomba

Not absolutely sure on this next one but I heard TSS was 70 something over State High at 10 something

Well not 70 something but High have yielded 145 odd points to 3 of the top 4 teams of the competition in the first 3 rounds

And from what I can tell , they seem to be at reasonably full strength perhaps without their best 9 option and with one of their outside backs gradually working his way back in

More high score one-way games predicted for next week. May need a mercy rule such is the two tiered nature of the comp this year.

NC vs GT

BBC vs BGS

TSS vs BSHS

IGS vs TGS

I expect Churchie will be kind of glad to have the weekend off. 101 points against in two games has got to suck. State high has had 100 points against and still has TSS next round. Ouch! Home teams by 40 again next week. BBC to absolutely whack BGS and put in a clinical 70 minute performance breaking 50 points and yes,..all three other teams playing away to get at least 40 points put on them also.

Dang! Close again.

The insurance companies and lawyers are well involved in this discussion. The arms race that has become GPS rugby is a huge liability.

I reckon 85% of games played between NC and GT had uncontested scrums, including some A games. I was at a jnr club game today and watched a team with an experienced front row call uncontested scrums, not because of injury but because they were being completely dominated by their opponents. This allowed the team to be more competitive, it evened up the contest somewhat. This is a deliberate tactic and referees never question the motives. It’s disgraceful and teams that take advantage of the rule should not be credited with a win should they be ahead at full time.

Undoubtedly teams take advantage of calling uncontested scrums. However, referees in junior games don't have a choice/can't question the motive/reason behind it.

BBC had their best performance yet IMO. Grammar’s line speed proved to be effective for the first 10-15 mins but appeared to become deflated after conceding two tries.

The atmosphere was non-existent from the back-end of the first half onwards. A weird experience in comparison to previous seasons.
However, the 2nds game was a thriller resulting in 24-21 victory to BBC after a last minute try.

Good to see Wald and Westcott return. BBC are expected to have the entirety of the injured list back for Ipswich or thereabouts. Positive signs for the squad heading into vital matches after the bye-round.

Totally agree with you with this.
Even in the younger age groups scrums can win matches, imagine being a front rower and putting in all the hard work pre season for them to call uncontested just because your too strong for them.

First time I have seen BBC this season.
I take my hat off to their defence coach (Mr Kefu?)-that defence is actually an offensive weapon.
Whether that defence can handle Mr Walker & his slick IGS backs or the monster TSS forward pack-I am not sure.
I can see why the RL clubs are drooling over BBC 13 -he hits with the force of a small train.
BGS were all heart.
The new RL boys 10,12^& 13 for BGS(who I was told are from Keebra Park) looked like RL boys playing rugby for the 3rd time-but they will be real good next year.

^Don't forget the 40 something points per game that Nudgee are putting on the board a well

Just out of interest Jack besides the flying hit with no arms ( that you reference above ) what else particularly did you like?

Sad to say , but there isn't much you gee up can take by beating up on a team like that . Also sad to say , they are a long way from last year's team featuring Tuimavave, Davies, Skerman , Waight and Asi. No one on this team is close to that quality. At least yet.

I wish them the best but I can't see them winning a game this year.
