So the 2016 GPS Rugby Season is at an end.

So here is how the "Whole of School" premiership would look:
1. GT - 175.5
2. NC - 175.0
3. BBC - 162.0
4. TGS - 143.5
5. TSS - 125.5
6. BSHS - 118.5
7. IGS - 115.0
8. ACGS - 96.5
9. BGS - 56.5

I think this is a pretty fair summary of the GPS rugby. GT and NC always a strong thanks to their depth with GT just getting over their cross town brothers thanks to the 1stXV yesterday. BBC continue to build their depth across all ages and will soon challenge the title of number one rugby school. TSS and TGS are always a threat especially at home while State High and IGS suffer from a lack of depth, while Churchie and BGS are working on rebuilding that depth.

Great season and congratulations to al the boys across their age groups and grades, well done all the best in 2017. And maybe the GPS Heads will look at a Whole of School Premiership to reward all the boys not just the 1st XV as they do in rowing.
Great stats. Thanks for providing these.
Any idea (numbers only) how many boys that just played their last first XV game were at their respective schools since the start of grade 8?

Would also be good to know how many grade 12 boys (not in the firsts) who started in grade 8 were still playing rugby for their school.

The number 10 for dlands really does it for me. He outperformed all his opposing flyhalfs consistently throughout the year. However, could not make QLD 1 or 2. I believe if he had gone to a GPS school he would have been a certain starter in the Queensland team. The structure of Australian grassroots rugby really needs improving

I think I understand what you are asking.

Of the boys who played in 1stXV this year I have been able to ascertain for the following schools how many boys in 1st XV played in Year 8 (limited by my records)
GT - 9 boys
BGS - 5 boys
TGS - 5 boys

Be interested if anyone has any more data.

Saw the vid the 10 was outstanding. Who is he?

There were a couple of guys who were genuinely unlucky not to get picked.

Twidale was one, Matt McCarthy from Sunshine Coast Grammar was another.

The only rationale I can think of is that coaches believe the GPS Competitions are greater preparation for the NZ Schoolboys, so while outside talents might be more talented they're unready for that level.

Just my 2 cents. Match reports and link for Team of the Season voting are online

I have to completely disagree with you there. It should not matter what competition you play in. If twidale or mccarthy is better on the day then they should get picked over a player who is in the GPS for instance and not as good.

Must disagree with you. At the moment any selector is dubious of selecting a player outside of the GPS system for the top teams unless they are 2m + tall with some talent or they are enormous and play 1 or 3. There are exceptions granted but the accumulation of "outside" talent and the use of the boarding houses should be evidence enough of this mindset.

I will agree with you that any particular player that is good enough they should be selected but I firmly believe that is not the case and hasn't been for quite some time. It also sometimes comes down to who the coaches feel safe and comfortable with.

It is a shame as regional areas have really picked up their game in terms of coaching structures and performance.

Mr King, you are again spot on. McCarthy should have been looked at for Oz Baa Baas and same with that lad who plays 10 for Downlands.

Herbet, you must realise that there are kids out there who simply do not want to go to a GPS school and turn down scholarships from GPS schools for a number of reasons.

I realise that it is not the case. However i believe what school you go to really should no influence whether you are chosen in a team or not. I believe it should be completely down to how you performed on the day.

I haven't witnessed this 10 from Downlands playing however I have seen McCarthy (good player) and he was picked for Sydney. Was the Downlands lad picked in any QLD trial team? The problem with Downlands is that they don't come up against full 1st teams (the teams don't want to risk injury) and the best no 10's. I didn't see TSS play Downlands so I can't comment, but my question would be "How did he go in the trials?"

10 of the Terrace first Xv were at the college in year 8. 2 of the Year 11 cohort were as well. One came in year 10 for family/schooling purposes. Surely that's one of the most 'pure' sides that have come through the year levels

Can you bring in 80% of your team in Grade 8 and 9 for the specific primary purpose of being more competitive on the paddock and call yourself pure ?

Just wonderin....

Not saying that this was the case with this year's GT Firsts Team, Getwithme , however , watch that space for the Red and Black come 2018 onwards

It's pretty clear

Enjoy the purity while it lasts

Two years in a row the Premiership has been won with mostly full fee-paying players. Nice sign that anyone can win, provided the right imports are added in the right positions.

Just spotted a Nudgee First XV player out of school uniform at a cafe in Newfarm for lunch.

Surely he's not been excused from school for the rest of the year now that rugby season is over?! EDIT: Exam block is on. Of course.

I've just watched the GTvNC game, and I was at the BSHSvTSS game, and I have a question for you.

I've seen it a lot this season, but bringing the fullback up into the defensive line, or alternatively failing to drop back a second back when the fullback makes a tackle seem to me to be suicide. Especially in the wet.

However I see A LOT of Aussie school and club sides do it, not just schoolboy 1st XV's. It's my opinion that this issue cost NC the game on the weekend, and to me it cost more teams many more points during the season.

Can anyone explain the logic of it to me?

Nudgee had a very specific reason for it from memory. Malala's was covering for his wingers who were getting caught out defensively often. Not sure about BSHS V TSS. It left miles and miles of acreage for Lucas and Kirk to explore and cost Nudgee field position.

100% agree with you. Not every kid wants a scholarship. Not every kid wants to board. Kids don't want to change school and leave their mates and again 100% agree with you, I believe that what school you attend should not influence whether you are chosen or not.......

I get that GT had two of the best wingers in the comp, but this wouldn't be my solution to the problem.
