I somewhat agree with previous posts... Yesterday I attended the game at Northgate and State High' were in the game, even leading and then suddenly it went to shambles.
They didn't use the wind to there advantage in the first half, to give an indication of how strong the wind was State High got a penalty 40m out 15m from the sideline and the ball sailed over and could of been kicked an extra 15m out.
I disagree with State Highs #5 playing well - both #4 & #5 seemed to be lost throughout the game
The starting props played well until #1 got injured.
Once State High lost there #12 which seemed to be from a shoulder injury, the backline was exposed lacking flare and cohesion which was obvious in the handling erorrs he is definitely needed for State High to be competitive.
#6 , #7, #8 All performed very well and kept trying until the final whistle; only players with any go-forward all stole balls off grammar, made tackles and looked promising in attack with a few support players alongside these 3 players the game could of been a much closer contest
#2 from State high wasn't in the game at all
#19 gave away penalties which led to tries then went back off the field - major coaching error
#15 Ran the ball himself too often, without using support players

disappointing from old boys perspective !

True indeed. Kudos goes to BGS for a resounding win. The BGS principle in his after game remarks was gracious in the win stating "we haven't won against BSHS in like a century" and praised the losing side. No doubt there will be no shortage of BGS subscribers applauding their players . and deservedly so. I will reserve as a mark of respect for BGS supporters to comment on their own players. Congratulations BGS.

BSHS capitulated just before the end of the first half when the game looked to be a tight affair. BGS took command of the field in the second half in every facet of the game in both forward and back play. While the loss is significant several promising factors in the BSHS team shone through that bodes well for a basis of success in forthcoming games. But that will only be exploited if the BSHS staff has the fortitude and the maturity to capitalise on it.

Indeed there are some that believe BSHS does not have the players to launch a serious threat to any GPS opposition this year. On the basis of this game they may very well be correct. But for me it is a matter of philosophy rather than talent pool. In other words, this is what we've got, lets see what we can get out of what we have. A change in philosophy is sometimes all it takes to make worthy of the unworthy (figuratively speaking).

This is what we have; the work rate of numbers 5,7 & 8 and the loss to injury of their big-man in the forwards should not go unnoticed. With little positives to draw upon and much criticism to endure, BSHS would do well to revitalise perceived strengths and look to the next game to implement and instill confidence in the pack. Clearly the tide turned for BSHS when the red headed power-broker got hurt, Who knows? maybe it would not have changed the result? but I think some self-belief in some team members went on the sideline with the big man. Only the players in their own self analysis could say.

A huge number (by my reckoning) of ball carries and tackles, particularly by #'s 5, 7 and 8 in the absence of their key power-broker on the sideline; the pick and drive and the clear-out was superb by these players but was just as quickly wasted or undone by uninspired play behind the breakdown. Obviously their tackle count was enhanced by the "forward foot" gameplay of the opposition. Still no mean feat win or lose. The key is for BSHS to build gameplay around this strength. Certainly 5,7 & 8 could not be everywhere on the field to cover the numerous short-comings and errors displayed in the backfield and their propensity to gift the ball to BGS intensified the implosion. In fairness it should also be said BGS placed significant pressure on BSHS to cause such errors and I take nothing away from BGS's superb attitude in the game. Good clean rugby by BGS was a plasure to witness.
you obviously saw BGS play yesterday, and i can tell your a state high man, but how do you think grammar will go this year?

IGS up against TSS and TGS up against ACGS.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we are going to be in for a rollercoaster season. Nudgee have lost serious firepower in both backs and forwards in the form of Sikimenti and Shipperley. Grammar deserve praise for their results across the board against State High, not one team from the 14B upwards lost, says alot about their rugby program but perhaps too illustrates State High's decline.

Quick summary of results:
BGS v BSHS
1st XV: 63 - 10, 2nd XV: 22 - 7, 16A: 11 - 7, 15A: 11 - 7, 14A: 28 - 12
TGS v ACGS
1st XV: 24 - 18, 2nd XV: 5 - 5, 16A: 34 - 8, 15A: 8 - 32, 14A: 7 - 8
IGS v TSS
1st XV: 25 - 17, 2nd XV: 5 - 27, 16A: 10 - 21, 15A: 12 - 10, 14A: 29 - 0
BBC v NC
1st XV: 13 - 28, 2nd XV: 7 - 15, 16A: 0 - 52, 15A: 0 - 17, 14A: 0 - 75

A few notes
- This round has raised more questions than it has answered.
- TGS rugby seems to be on the improve after a few years down in the cellars. The depth they have in year 12 appears to spread across all age groups with the exception of the 15's.
- IGS and TSS only fielded 12 teams each across all ages, not sure if weather played a part in this. Both look very solid in 1st XV.
- BGS are on the rise but it's interesting that everyone of their 'A teams' won except the 13's, the score in that one was 73-0 to State High, perhaps scholarships have a little to do with it but that's not my allegation.
- NC are still favourites, followed by TGS.

Also while we are all posting team lists, this is what I believe Churchie's XV was yesterday (not entirely sure of each position, Schafer and Watson could easily play both 12/15)

1. Jack Leamon
2. Joe Warriner
3. Ben White
4. Will Godfrey
5. Luke Sheppard
6. Sebastian Georgiou
7. Michael Gunn
8. Lochey Oppenheimer
9. Vincent Quigley
10. Darcy Eason
11. Moses Clarke
12. James Watson
13. Nigel Tanuvasa
14. Monty Ioane
15. Jaidon Schafer

Players not selected: 12. McClanahan, 11. West, 15. Hyne, 7. MacMillan, 3. Machin

No excuses as those unavailable players wouldn't have made too much of a difference. The forward pack looks exceptionally weak when compared to the likes of NC, IGS and TGS. The return of MacMillan should see Georgiou back into the second-row, Machins' return should see White to the bench. McClanahan and West would also both usually start and will need to be fit if they want a good chance against Nudgee.

Predictions for Round 2?

GT vs. IGS
ACGS vs. NC
BSHS vs. BBC
BGS vs. TGS

And I though round 1 would be the round of the season, 2 looks just as interesting. Weather prediction is for clear skies and sunshine.

GT v IGS:
I'm leaning towards the red and white due to their result against TSS. They have real firepower in the forwards and GT could struggle come set pieces. That being said GT would have to like their chances in the backs, it should be close but IGS might just scrape this one to go 2-0. IGS by 7

ACGS v NC
The match of the round without question. Both teams have been plagued by injuries after being pre-season favourites. Nudgee have lost Sikimenti, Shipperley and Tenakanai while Churchie are without MacMillan, McClanahan and West. It's old boys day at Churchie so I expect a large crowd, Churchie will like their chances if the pitch is dry and they can use their backs, Nudgee will be happy with a forward-orientated match like that at Suncorp. Can't see Churchie winning this one right now though unless the Nudgee forwards go missing, Nudgee by 3

BSHS v BBC
State High need to rebound and fast, they aren't a team that will lie down after one loss and I expect they will be back with a vengeance for this one. BBC out-muscled the NC forwards and will look for a forward based game against a weak State High pack, the BBC back-line has a seriously long injury list so expect State High to try exploit it. It will be close but I'm backing BBC by 10.

BGS v TGS
This could go either way. Both sides look to have early form and are littered with players who can make a difference. The forward battle should go the way of Toowoomba but the backs will be where the match is won and lost. TGS will hope that Placid can control the BGS outside backs while BGS will be looking to the direction of Greene to run straight through the TGS midfield which looks weak. It should be a close one by I think BGS might get up at Northgate continuing their undefeated season much to the joy of posters on here, BGS by 5

Machins' return should see White to the bench.
You do realise Machin has been playing seconds all year?
Predictions for Round 2?
GT vs. IGS
ACGS vs. NC
BSHS vs. BBC
BGS vs. TGS
GT vs IGS
GT has a vastly improved forward pack especially star No. 8 Sitanilei and lock 4. French. Should be able to match up most of IGS strong forwards - French and Preen practically cancel each other out in the lineout, R. Green and D. Sitanilei both have the size counter A. Pleash and L. Takau. For me this game will come to the battle of the inside backs, and at the moment J. Dalgleish and K. Larosa appear to be one of the premier 10/12 combos going around. GT by a try.

ACGS vs NC
Churchie have come into this season with enormous expectations because of recruiting, but after their not-so-shocking loss to TGS they should no longer really be considered for anything higher than third - the team is weak in the forwards and overrated in the backs with the exception of the likes of M. Ioane and N. Tanuvasa. Nudgee should run over ACGS up front and have the likes of James and Tuttle to pull them through in the backline. Also appear to be more cohesive as a team. A massive crowd expected at Churchie and I think this will play against them - the pressure is all on Churchie while Nudgee would like nothing better to send the crowd home unhappy. NC to pull the 'upset' and truly put a damper on the centenary celebrations, by two tries.

BSHS vs BBC
State High, by all accounts, seemed to collapse in the second half against Grammar. BBC lost to Nudgee, but have a team somewhat similar to Nudgee (albeit weaker) - a strong pack backed up by slick, if not overly impressive backs. Look for State High to stay in the hunt for a while, then once again lose it in the second half. BBC by three tries.

BGS vs TGS
The battle for the premiership? TGS appear to be the goods this year, and for me this is the match of the round (in a round with many intriguing matchups). The battle up front will decide this game, and I think TGS will just pull it out - TGS by a penalty goal, setting them up for a showdown with NC later on for the crown.

TSS to have a hard slog at training this week after going down to Ippy.

I had him ahead of White based on what I saw at Suncorp and in the 16A's. It's still round one, that's hardly all year and the Churchie tight 5 is hardly confirmed or consistant.. Happy to be corrected though.

Well ... you could say the whole team was 'lost' not just #4 & 5. Then again #5 is no more a second rower than #13 was a centre (he's a better winger). #5 has played the majority of his rugby in 8, 6 or 7 not the second row. He wasn't the only one made to play out of position. In the aftermath there will be those looking for someone to blame for the loss as it is with all such games, but the things players do well in a losing game are never given cred. I stand by my view 5, 7, 8, 15 and others 'Globetrotter' mentioned had to (in what was a pathetic performance by Corne Uyc's standards) needed to do what could be done. I concede that the loss of #12 was detrimental to the team (couldn't mention everyone, my posts are too wordy) and stemming the tide against a BGS side running hot was a lot to ask. I believe if all things were in place for the entire game as you, it would have been a better result.

Unlike 'Corne Uyc'only recognising #8 (played/plays for Australia), but he was one man doing what he does best and he was darn good at it too. But he wasn't the only one who acquitted himself.

Take the GT glasses off mate, Pleash is one of the best schoolboy props in Australia, Takau is one of the best in Queensland and Preen played Australian Schools A, making QLD in year 11 aswell. How you think French, Green and Takau cancel them out is beyond me, IGS showed last weekend that they can mix it with the best when they beat TSS. I may over-rate Churchie, but you my friend not only over-rate Terrace but significantly under-rate IGS. Dalgleish and Larasa are a premier combo?

Better than James-Tuttle (NC), Third-Cooney (TSS), Greene-Laud (BGS), Eason-McClanahan (ACGS)...just to name a few.

Let's wait and see if GT can dust off the cobwebs and win their first GPS rugby match since 2010.

The team is weak in the forwards and overrated in the backs with the exception of the likes of M. Ioane and N. Tanuvasa.

Name 3 teams with stronger backlines.. I'd rather have 2 Australian Schoolboys and 4 Queensland backs than one, or none at all. You are also forgetting Michael Gunn who is without doubt the best openside flanker in the competition.

I am not saying your predictions are wrong but your deep hate for Churchie is a little concerning. You may have predicted their loss to TGS last weekend but it wasn't that much of an upset, TGS were at home and ACGS managed to stay within 10 points despite not playing to their scholarship 'potential' as some would say.. I guess after one loss they are no longer premiership contenders and should just lie down and let TGS or Nudgee win it. You have a short memory, it is still round one and schoolboy rugby is known for its unpredictability. I'll be surprised if any team goes undefeated and to write off last years runners-up after one performance is a silly mistake to make.

This is by far the closest GPS competition in history. Even when there were the three way ties between NC,ACGS and TSS the rest of the competition were miles away. As a relatively recent Nudgee old boy, I have to say that the Nudgee team this year seems to lack the pride and passion that the Blue and White possesed whilst I was at school. I went and watched the trial against GT a few weeks ago and was shocked to see how lathargic they seemed. That being said, having read all of the ranting about GT's "top 3 team" I had a bit of a laugh watching them play. Yes they have two new forwards and yes they have definately improved from last year, however they will struggle to come top 7 this year. Their backline looked small and unsure (especially the wingers) and their two flankers were the smallest I have ever seen play first 15. Going on what I've heard I still beleive NC will win this year simply because of depth.

Welcome NCGPSR2012, we don't have too many Nudgee posters on here. Interesting first post, you are not the only one who sees right through the Terrace posters big words. Will you be at the Nudgee game next weekend or heading out to see Ippy take on premiership favourites Terrace?
