Am I right in noting that they have only picked one hooker ?

Looks like it to me. I've checked all the programmes I have from the various carnivals and can't see another no 2 in the list.

Can anyone enlighten us?

have you ever seen jones kick ??? he has a fair boot on him and with practise it would truly fly... although agree about kicking goals.. although jones has more menacing attack and about the same defence i do think that kellaways reputation is what gets him places although a great footballer
I indeed have seen him, kick, play, run, defend and do almost everything. I don't doubt his ability, but Kellaway's kick, running game and defence is of high standard. Watching Jones at the back, his vision is = to that of Kellaways, his boot is close to the same, although i say kellaway's is better because his vision as to where he wants it, Jones' defence is the big question, i heard a big Islander boy ran over the top of him at fullback last week. Just as an example.
I do think Kellaway is better at the back the Jones, he has played the position for longer than jones (I've seen them play club footy since the U12's) and Kellaway can handle presure and tight situations deep. His name shouldn't be any reason to say why he is better than jones either RG, Kellaway's name if anything is out there is because he is proven to be better than Jones, so don't use it against him.

Yes, it is crazy, especially at this level ....

And as for the discussion about Orr, whether he plays at 1 or 4, he's a monster workhorse up front and a passionate leader. The CAS 1st XVs thread reveals he was spotted being quite nimble/agile against Knox last Saturday, and he was sparkling in Sunday's game. Orr would get my vote for appointment as Captain of the NSW side. At least he could bring some sanity back to the morass of craziness which (for a variety of reasons) is the Under 16's world right now.

I have to agree with you. Saw him captain the CAS Under 16s against Country Schools at Knox. Impressive - not only thinks but consults. Took over from Jamo on the weekend when he came off - unafraid to take his concerns to the ref. Understand he is also captain of his U 16s Wests side. They didn't win any games in the "As" comp this year - wasn't without trying though - by all reports the team enjoyed their games regardless. Rugby being the winner!

I am a big fan of Cam Orr. He is a true leader - leads by example, always talks to his pack, unafraid to question the ref about decisions and is a fine young gentleman off the field! A credit to his parents I say! He would be my pick for captain of any team as he has the qualities of a fine captain.

For anyone interested... According to Buddha the Under 16A Sydney club semi finals are being played at the same venue on Sunday, Wakehurst Rugby Park. Should be some good footy and no Sydney game so all teams should be at full strength. Hills v Norths at 11:50 and Merrylands v Hawkesbury at 13:00. They are also hosting Dee Why v Hunters Hill at 09:30 and Beecroft v Roseville at 10:40 in Under 16 C semis if you want an appetiser beforehand.

Malcsy,

Isn't Wakehurst somewhere in southern Brisbane ... Lmao ... For someone living south of the harbour bridge that is a five day camel ride!

If you don't mind could I defer to you for a report, especially with respect to the Merrylands v. Hawkesbury game. I'm expecting the Clark v Angeloni battle to be a good one. Angeloni has been snubbed by selectors as of recent times and perhaps this will be his time to stand up and be counted!

I had heard a rumour that clark hasn't played enough club games to be eligible. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

He's not the only one that selectors are snubbing !!

Lol - its going to be a good show of rugby I'm hoping! And it doesn't really make sense that Jamo Clark can play in the Sydney team but not be eligible to play in the semi finals?! Mind you a lot of sjru goings on don't make sense or rules get changed to suit Bahahaha ! May common sense prevail and the cream of club rugby put on a great display of rugby!

Now you've got me!

Which players did not play regionals & do we know why? Ignore that boys were told which team they would play in (Schools or SJRU) as U16s and would otherwise be denied an opportunity to play NSWJRU. Procedural fairness needs to rub in 2 directions.

As to the state side, don't be surprised if the second named side (after the champs) is different and more reflective of the perfomances put in across a multi day tournament.
Hoo-werr. By my recollections, Andrew K wasn't at Regionals for some reason I heard at the time, yet (among any others) Tepai M played for MWZ. Beats me.

What is the nature of '..the second named side...'? Is it a further side, or a revision of what was named last Sunday? Again, I may be wrong, but I thought I read here that the NSW/QLD match will be played on a date prior to the Nationals week.

Quite right. There are SJRU boys roughly in 1-15, with some overlap mainly through the middle - and some crowding in the backs as has been debated here. It might have strained the 'quota' for any more CJRU boys to be named! I don't recall seeing the Sydney no.16 on the field either. Oh well, let's hope there aren't any misfortunes that now have a bigger chance of necessitating uncontested scrums - which make a match too mungo-like and about as pleasurable as watching Eddie McGuire.

gee roosters123...I hope you have taken up another sport....you certainly cant pick the best rugby tips!

He wasn't close, but i think all 16''s team this year (Apart from kings) have been down played due to injuries and boys playing up.
Kings arent that much of a stand out team, but have played well.

Of course I will furnish you with a report Newbs, seeing as you asked so nicely!

The five eight battle will indeed be interesting. Both are first class but I prefer Cale slightly, less flashy but more dependable I'd say. Some good battles in the other game too, particularly Matson v Williams and Tepai v Wolfgramm. You sure it's not worth jumping on the camel and crossing the coat hanger ? The Wakehurst canteen does a lovely Skinny Latte also...

Kiwi,

to qualify for the finals series a player has to have played 50% of the games in the regular season. Dispensation is also available for things such as injury which, I believe, is judged on a case by case basis. My understanding is that 'played' means signed in rather than taken to the field, which makes sense as a player could be on the bench and not get on, or be carrying a knock that isn't worth risking but is available if needed. However, the system is potentially open to manipulation.

With regard to SJRU, a player had to have competed at the State Championships to qualify. To qualify for State Champs a player only needed to have been registered with a club and 'played' (i.e. signed in for) 4 or more games in this season OR last season. So a player could be in the SJRU side this year having played no club rugby at all this year, and so on to NSW. Young Kellaway, for example, made NSWJRU without playing for SJRU, without playing for MNZ and without playing for Hunters Hill (the latter having provided a total 13 players to Gordon, most, I'm told, not actually playing for the C grade village team this year). It might seem inconsistent with a pathway for club players, but dems da rules!

NSWJRU Vs ACT 18 Sep - before the National Champs - played in Canberra

NSWJRU Vs QLD on 1 Oct - after the National Champs - played in Sydney

Even NSW could not be so dumb as not to use the Nationals as an opportunity to sort out a serious team to take on the baby reds!

You seem to have pretty good oil re the North's side. I've only seen them this year at State Champs and thought they struggled a bit. Looking at results for club rugby they have been touched up a couple of times this year. They do have some very good players, will they be at full strength this weekend?

Tepai and Robbie Wolfgramm is a good clash, better still if Robbie is fit, he has looked a bit out of shape but he is a game changer when he is on. Do you know if Max Cook is playing. Norths have some big boppers in the forward pack and are certainly led well by David Morris. I expected a bit more from them as I said at State Champs and actually thought their forwards were a bit of a let down.

I thought the 5/8th played very well and the other centre Dylan ? was great. Are these guys still going well?

Did I see somewhere that Jordan Winterburn made NSW 16's, is that the Norths Prop? I know you have a big wrap on the hooker, I agree, enjoy watching him play tough old style hooker and looks the part lol.

Interested in your insights prior to the match. My assesment of the forwards performance may be a bit harsh seeing as I have only seen them this year at State Champs. Certainly a good side on paper and should be a good game if they all play to their potential.

Look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers

Shinsplits,

They have struggled this year to get their strongest team on the paddock, State Champs being the first time, and last time apparently. Looks like I might have been wrong with regard to them being at full strength. I'm told Max didn't play last weekend (shoulder injury) so probably won't play and the 5/8th has a broken leg. Dylan, who you mentioned, is filling in there. David Morris is not playing and Harry Williams (NSW lock) hasn't played last couple of games, not sure if he is in for Sunday. They still have a number of good players though and have experience in winning club finals footy games so will be tough to beat, just not as tough as I was expecting which is a shame.

And yes, you did see correctly. Jordan (Prop) was called into the Sydney side to replace (I think) the injured Junior.

Also hearing that this will be their last season as Pirates. Too many school commitments for most next year. The rest are off to Norths Colts together.

Kings arent that much of a stand out team, but have played well.

From what I understand Kings don't play their U16s up in Opens rugby whereas others like Joeys and Riverview do quite a bit and Scots and Newington to a lesser degree. This has no doubt been of benefit to them being apparently unbeaten in all games this year including a flogging of Riverview 31-0 last weekend. The challenge for them will be when they move into Opens rugby next year against players in their own age bracket who've had good exposure to Opens rugby this year. It would be interesting to see them play against a top notch 16's team as if you look at their team as put up in a previous post and then look at the U16 rep sides this year they've certainly got some talent in their XV.
