Seems some interest in Selections and the art and science of selecting.

Selecting is not just about choosing the pretty boys and seagulls scoring tries.

Following is a bit of a "google search" on selecting.

That's good as it provides a framework that everyone can understand.

However it still doesn't address to what games the framework is to be applied. Is it Champs? Regionals? both? Does anyone know?

Clarity on this will go a long way to addressing real or perceived bias and IMO more so if the greatest weight is given to performance in the regional's.

There is a lot of commonality in the lists/criteria. It is not Rocket Surgery.

It is up to the various administrations how they apply these and what guidance they give to their Selectors/Scouts/Clipboards.

The higher the level of footy the more likely that there will be formal processes used to support selections.

Remember that selectors at JSC and similar levels are time poor unpaid volunteers.

Also many (not all) claims of perceived bias and incompetence from selectors are made by individuals who are far more biased in favour of their preferred candidates that the selectors.

Quick Hands

David Wilson (68)
Don't see how.
Once again the difference is a more level playing field.
Say for example in champs Johnny scores 2 tries in a one sided game and his opponent never touches the ball, how can a fair comparison be made? At least in zone this scenario is less likely to occur.
And greater transparency, ie selection criteria is known to all, makes it difficult to stack a side with favorites if the performance is not there.
Don't see why this is a problem for some.

But the little Johnny who doesn't touch the ball in your scenario won't even get to the zone trials.

I'd add, that if a boy doesn't touch the ball, he's probably not looking for it in the first place.

But you see, in your example, you highlighted how the selectors got it wrong at the zone trials anyway.

Your 2nd point was that zone games are at the same ground in the same conditions, so are the state championships - so that argument doesn't hold any water at all.

One off games at carnivals aren't a particularly good way to be selecting teams. What should happen is that after the State Championships a train-on squad of 40-50 boys are picked and they attend training sessions for skills evaluations and development and play some internal trials to pick the final team of 23.

Finally, if you think it is possible to have a selection process where nobody has any favourites or pre-conceived ideas, I think that you are going to be disappointed.

There's only one way to pick a proper rep side (apart form putting Slugga's son in it) and that is to watch as many games from the comps in which the kids play as possible over as many weeks as you possibly can
However, unless you've got access to video of games or an unlimited number of selectors in whom you have reasonable faith you will have to make some choices about who to watch: you can't be everywhere at once.
As Huge always says the unevenness of the rep selection playing field means that both you and your child need to be prepared to miss out - its just one bloke's opinion on one day and it means nothing more than that.

went to watch my young bloke play for Eastwood Under 16's today. They had a trial against a full strength Penrith side. Eastwood was down 4 regular starting players and the full time score was 3 tries each. A trial is a trial is a trial but an interesting result 3 weeks out from the NSWSC.

No club today?

Got it now quick hands. Getting flogged is no excuse, it’s the kids fault for not ‘looking for the ball’. Sounds fair

My 2nd point was in response to using the condition of the ground as an excuse for MNZ losing to MSZ. (why do Northern supporters have so much trouble accepting defeat?)Had nothing to do with champs, you’re creating and discrediting an argument I never made.

I do think your train-on squad scenario has merit, does that mean you agree the current set up can be made fairer?

Inside shoulder as much as you would like it’s not about my son. You have no idea about his circumstances so don’t comment from the depths of your ignorance.

It does however come as no surprise you like thinks just as they are, even playing fields are so inconvenient for the elite. My concern is the health of rugby and giving all the kids a fair go in the face of the likes of you.

Oh and I watched the Eastwood/Penrith trial today, at three try’s each it was not a bad game, but then they probably just got lucky - you know, a bit like last year.

Funny you should ask IS as I was just contemplating the following question: Is too much Rugby never enough??. this weekend he's played a full game for Kings 16a's against St Stannies yesterday.a club game for Dural against the Western Raptors this morning and the Eastwood trial against Penrith this afternoon..he got through it unscathed and enjoyed every minute but the load on the young guys is maybe a bit much

Thats why I asked:

Last year was last year.

Last year Chooks won the Mungo premiership. This year the Townsville mob killed them by 50 something to not all that much.

Time to move on and let it go. This thread is about 2014 State Champs, not last years State Champs, SJRU regional tournament, SJRU Reps or NSW rep selections.

It is not unheard of for a kid to do all of the above and have some Loig committments as well.

ARU have issued some guidelines, but ultimately the Parents should be managing their children's commitments in the best interest of the child, not for some quixotic pursuit of a mythical pot of gold at the end of a far off rainbow.

I have no role in the administration or coaching of rugby at any level at the moment.
I had no personal or family involvement in the 2013 U 15s beyond state champs.
You have slandered people without knowing why there was a stuff up and you immediately assume a conspiracy: the problem as I have pointed out to you is that if there was a conspiracy which produced the situation you complain of it involved your district club, and possibly your village club. You ignore that inconvenient fact because it doesn't suit your view that your district club was disadvantaged in selections - if it was then your club is at least partly to blame.
And it would seem, as a matter of interest, that your club has breached the very clear ARU guidelines concerning the limit on playing time in a day for age players. Don't worry I won't tell anyone - its only the officials who would get in trouble.

Suites me fine Hugh Jarse, this merry go round ceased being about rugby a while ago.

As for State Champs it looks like Gordon, Norths, Woods, Parra and Penrith are the contenders.

Does anyone know when the draw is out?

From tedious to pathetic. Couldn't care less what you do I'm done talking to you.
