Yep, not too many boys make the 1st XV whilst in year 10. They usually go on to be superstars, as Kurtley Beale did.

If the lads are the right age and have the requisite skill then IMHO it actually doesn't matter. It's up to parents if they are happy to shell out a pile of hard earned sheckles for another year of private school fees.

As long as the interests of the boy are paramount and the interests of the school/coach are secondary I don't think it does really matter. I'm not sure that this is always the case though.

After Japan's defeat of South Africa in the World Rugby Cup, nobody should take their Rugby for granted. Clearly, Games 2& 4 are indicative of this improving trend. Apart from the Rugby experience, I am sure the Newington boys will value this tour as a cultural exposure, that they will value for a lifetime.
Back to Japanese Rugby, if the money and time could be found a yearly match between Australian and Japanese Schoolboys should now be a consideration on the Australian Rugby Calendar. Scores may vary 2005 such as 2005, Australia Won 105-5, but could be closer as in 1984 Australia where Won 20-6.

Although it is still early days, to beat a traditionally strong Rugby school such as Waverly,by some of the amounts stated, gives hope for the future. However, I do agree that 2017 could well prove to a difficult year. On the positive side I would expect that the Newington 1st XV of 2017 will be a young side, with hopes for 2018.

I was not implying "S" word, but rather the raising of funds for the Rugby in training resources and providing expert coaches.

Rachet, would seem a bit inconsistent if I highlighted him (Quninn) in one post and then responding to a request for a review of the Joe v Marist match failed to mention him again. You may be right and my opinion is flawed but I have no reason to be disappointed, possibly more reason to be happy if not selected in their 1sts and playing against competition I affiliate with.

I would be curious to know if all the gps schools are much the same in terms of the level of commitment that is being put on kids in the 1sts.
Scots seems to have the recent reputation although always thought joeys were known for their extraordinary training
And more importantly wondering if it is getting to the level that if you are in the firsts you are doing your atar chances a lot of damage

SDW - based on our experience at a school other than Scots, I'd have to suggest that any boy playing in either the 1st or 2nd XV was doing their ATAR chances a significant amount of harm, unless they were boarding or doing pathways. In the case of my son (2nd XV), there was the requirement of a minimum of 3 morning sessions and 3 afternoon sessions per week - and factoring in his travel time of 45-60 mins each way, he was putting in 13 hour days. Other than the occasional free period during the day, his study time was limited to the brief period he could stay awake after getting home at 7pm and having a feed, or early Saturday mornings and Sundays, or the occasional afternoon not devoted to other co-curricular activities. This was the pattern for Yr 11 and Yr 12, given that the training workload for the rowing program in summer was much the same as rugby in winter - while my young bloke thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of his time at school, and is now doing a degree he seems to enjoy, I can't help but wonder what his ATAR might have been if he'd had more time to study.

The Joeys training regime was/is based as much on the boarding experience as sporting requirements. Keeping young adolescents busy with physical activity is a strategy well known to all. The expensive, efficient drainage on the Joeys playing fields were not installed just to provide a good Saturday playing surface, but to have fields available all week for training for all boys.
The concerns about training and travelling eating into study time have been addressed by some parents and boys by at GPS schools by switching into boarding for years 11 and 12.
