tight hamstring

I don't think anyone can seriously doubt Joeys rightful status as the best rugby school in GPS and probably much wider . Would have gone very , very close if they had had Wright at wing or fullback from the start of the comp. Not many 1st XV returning but it just doesn't matter they will be competitive again .

I know is a great result but all is matter is the first XV that count the most. Whens the last time Joey won the first XV ??
Talk about talent they got the most team but they havent go close yet.

Even as a Joeys boy from a while back I find that a poor and ignorant comment.
At Joeys, the 1st XV are only as good as they are because of the quality and depth below them.
Can other schools say this?

So.....it's been a bumper season on the 2015 AAGPS thread but we are still behind on our KPI's. At the same time last year we were up to page 149 and 2968 posts....As of today we are still 142 posts and 7 pages behind target. o_O

The non-compulsory boarding arose because things in the bush deteriorated and the intake of country lads became smaller.

They had to interest city families who didn't want the boys to board (or the boys didn't want to board) to make ends meet.

The other main reason why Joeys don't compete for top spots now at the the 1st XV level and sometimes the next level down—compared to some teams who used to be easy-beats—is best discussed in another thread.

Leaving that discussion aside for a minute, Joeys beat New and came close to upsetting Scots

Is there a correlation between when Joeys went to non compulsory boarding and 'decline' in rugby supremacy?

That's a question that seems to be given an annual airing. In addition to LG's above post, Baldingwingforward's well reasoned response in the 2011 thread was:

This is my take on it:
A number of things have happened that have had an impact on Joeys Rugby and as a result, they are not as dominant now, and possibly won't ever return to their dominance of old.

Firstly - the competition being made strictly U18 has had a big impact on a number of schools, but especially Joeys. In days gone by (and i'm talking 80s and 90s) it was common for boys to repeat Yr 12 so they could play another year of 1st XV and get another shot at GPS glory. This meant that there used to be a number of 'older' players playing 1st XV rugby. This can no longer happen and it has had an impact.

Secondly - the Joeys demographic has changed significantly in the last few years (as it has at other schools) and with the move away from 100% boarding they no longer have the cream of the kids that they used to. Their numbers are smaller than some of the other schools and this is having an impact, and i think will become even more influential in the next few years.

Thirdly - other schools, in an attempt to match the success of Joeys, have put much more emphasis on their rugby programmes. Opposition players are now better coached and very well prepared in terms of the strength and conditioning that they get put through. Joeys used to lead the way here, with a huge gym culture, particularly amongst the boarders - perhaps not anymore? Kings, New and Scots all have dedicated Directors of Rugby who do very little/no teaching, and get big $s - they are solely there to improve the standard of the rugby programme and the 1st XV.

Fourthly - several schools (Kings, Newington and Scots) have become very aggressive in their quest for GPS Rugby premierships. Despite there being clear GPS byelaws relating to @cholarships they blatantly ignore them. This results in their 1st XV teams being MUCH better than they would normally/used to be, and therefore much harder to beat - therefore Joeys doesn't win like they used to.

Lastly and perhaps most controversially, but could it be time for some new coaching blood at Joeys? How long has Brth Boyd been at the helm? An excellent coach who has had unrivalled success, but is he up to date with the current trends and tactics?

Not wanting to start a flame war here with Baldingwingforward's abovementioned fourth point, that's for the "other" thread". Time has moved on since his last point but I thought I'd maintain the integrity of the post in its entirety.

The 2014 thread started on 17 June 2013 whereas this thread started on 19 August 2014 giving the 2014 thread a jump start on pre-season prognostications & general wanging on.

TIPPING COMP FINAL

So 10 rounds of great rugby has come and gone, Here are the die hards who regularly tipped.

The final 2 rounds really did sort the sheep from the goats. Some didn't like the Power tipping, and others thrived on challenge of the seconds and thirds.

We have an OUTRIGHT winner, and a very worthy one at that. Rich_E congratulations. Not only are you very good at writing up games and Season reviews and the like, you must have a bit of an idea of who can play rugby, and what teams will win. A perfect round in the last saw Rich pip the very reliable and usual front runner Mr Jarse.

Nectophiliac who was well in contention couldn't handle the power tipping concept, and with the line in sight faded badly back in the field. (The vets were attending at last report, and grim fears are held about Nectos future)

Wristman, pulled a perfect round 10 and made a massive move on the leaders to get a podium finish. Equal 2nd with Mr Jarse.

In keeping with tradition no Third place is awarded.

Yours truly had an appalling run at that tipping, and took the spoon. Ok with that this year, next year things will be very different

Just because I'm proud of their record as a school and I know SDW appreciates the stats..

Joeys 2015 Record during GPS Rounds (including the off-shoot comp)

Total Games Played 275 .. Lost 29 .. Drew 2

As Phil Gould says Wowww!!

Although I feel like Mel Gibson in that movie Conspiracy Theory ... searching for irregularities .. irregularities that probably just aren't there.

The single worst team at Joeys in 2015 (15As), was coached by Brother Anthony Boyd ... wasn't he once the single best schoolboy coach?!

Then there were the mysterious Joeys props in the 3rds ... Behringer was one of the 3rds best in 2014 ... and was tipped to be 1sts in 2015 .. stayed in 3rds ... and Cameron Fazzari , red hot former representative prop ... even when injury struck at higher levels ... they stayed in 3rds?

Then the Joeys 1sts ... its like a curse .. their Aussie school star ruptures his ACL before the titanic Scots rematch

They play like champions ... even with their other Aussie school star and captain (Horton) struck down by the curse...

Something weird ... like the hand of god ... the go-gadget arm of McCauley ... SDW's mind boggles

Other schools, other irregularities ... Aussie School players evaporating, but then resurfacing ... conspiracy theories abound.

And Rob Egerton there is .. popping up again .. holding the trophy ...

Scots has even express couriered it across town ..

Oh well, back into hibernation .. before the good Doctor puts me in the straight-jacket ...

and with the summer to ponder the Boyd paradox, the mystery props, the Hunters Hill curse, the vanishing Aussie schoolboys, and other strange things, including Pies at Shore, that just taste too good ...

The class of 2007 were the last year group to go through as boarding only.

This is incorrect. Joeys had their first group of day students in Year 7 in 1996. This group were in the First XV of 2001. Funnily enough, Joeys won the premiership in that year. Additionally, they also won the premiership in 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007.

Ok ... I just don't get it ... I am confused ... how could one question the success of the Joeys Rugby program. A decline in rugby supremacy? Check this out:

Firstly - note that Joeys has 42 teams and no other school can match them grade for grade.

Round 1: Joeys played Riverview in 35 matches and Joeys won 34 of these.

Round 2: Joeys played Scots in 27 matches. Joeys won 23 of them. Of the ones they lost, the 13H lost to Scots 13F, the 15G lost to Scots 15C and 16G lost to 16F.

Round 3: Joeys played Newington in only 7 matches due to rain. Joeys won 5 of them.

Round 4: Joeys played Kings in 19 matches. Joeys won 15 of them. Of the loses, 13H lost to Kings 13F, 14F lost to Kings 14D and 13ths lost to Kings 9hs.

Round 5: Joeys played Shore in 19 matches and won all of them.

Round 6: Joeys played Riverview in 33 matches. Joeys won 27 of them. Of the loses, 13E lost to Riverview 13D, 16G lost to Riverview 16F and 16F lost to Riverview 16E.

Round 7: Joeys played Scots in 22 games won 16 of them. Of the loses, 13H lost to Scots 13F, 13G lost to Scots 13E, 13ths lost to Scots 7ths.

Round 8: Joeys played Newington in 22 matches and lost just 2 of which one of them was 14E losing to Newington 14C and the other was 9ths losing to Newington 5ths.

Round 9: Joeys played Kings in 27 matches and lost only 2. One of which was the 13ths losing to the Kings 9ths.

Round 10: Joeys played Shore in 30 matches and won 29 of them.

I think that overall, Joeys should be very happy with their rugby program!!!
