NSW AAGPS Rugby 2013

Caught up with a Newington Old boy / dad at the weekend. I have known him for 10 years to give you context and he is very close to the rugby there. He reckoned this years team was going to be better than last years.

He also said that whilst there are clearly kids who have joined the school with 'assistance', a number of kids who have recently joined and that are in the rugby team are not. Indicated they were simply attracted by the quality of the rugby program in the latter years.

Slightly different take on the situation i guess, also lends to the idea that success can become self fulfilling/ extending to some degree by attracting talent independently.

Anyway sum of it was that I came away thinking this was the team to beat this year, with Scots number 2, Kings 3. This guy has been more right than wrong in the past.

Just because people keep saying it, doesn't make it true.
Go to the correct thread with this and you will be shot down in flames.
Having said that, ignoring the method of recruitment. They have assembled a very strong side for this year,and it is hard see them being beaten.

SCOTS:

1. Established great footballer: Andrew Kellaway at no 15 will be playing his third season of first XV rugby and has done it all in schoolboy rep teams at both NSW and Australian schools level.

2. Rising star: Angus Crichton at no 8 will be playing his second season of first XV rugby and will still be one of the youngest in the team. Many consider him a future Wallaby.

3. First XV rookie: Scots 16A's were premiers last year and there are a number of team members who will make this year's first XV - I'll go for Simon Johnson at no 13.

Interesting order! Where would you put Joey's? I have always considered that their depth and good results across all teams and age groups last year would stand them in good stead - particularly with the new format and extended season.

Your points are very valid, particularly re format and extended season playing to Joeys undoubted depth of talent.

The reality though I think is that Newington, Scots and Kings have taken their coaching to a new level which Joeys have not. Additionally new arrivals, which stays on the other thread, is also clearly a factor.

Coaching has to be a 50% + determinant in any team sport success surely?

At the end of the day, and what posters here don't seem to like talking about, is the quality of GPS coaching. Unfortunately I think Joeys have fallen behind the times regarding coaching, certainly over the past 5 years, and other GPS schools have moved significantly ahead.

So to answer you I would have Joeys 4th.....equal to SHORE.

Joeys do not employ hired guns from coaching company's and clubs. They pay only $20 an hour. Mostly coaching is still done by the staff including the Head. Considering the school won 81% of all games in 2012 including 22 undefeated teams says that the staff know their stuff. It is a pity that many 1st XV teams are coached by "special staff" who teach 3 PE lessons a week and focus on rugby solely.

Just to add I have worked in GPS schools for 18 years and are fully ashamed of how the temporary glamour of a GPS title chased by cashed up schools (fueled by boosters) has sullied the school boy code.

With no desire to challenge your statement, I tend to like the way the various schools have chased talented lads and in doing so raised their rugby standards . I like to think it comes from the desire to achieve excellence in all the activities offered to the lads. That pursuit of excellence is why a GPS education is so valuable, in my opinion.

The only rugby standard they raise is within the 1st XV. The all round excellence and Bold Hearts mentality is simply a marketing tool. Judge a school on how it helps and treats it less able I say. Joeys has blind, deaf and disabled students who play sport. They are coached by caring and passionate people. The fact is Joeys Headmaster is the only Head who coaches. What team? 13H's. Even the weakest matter. That is what I judge an excellent school upon.

Not every TSC supporter was proud of this moment. It was disgraceful. Scots old boys are still asked to donate money to the Rugby program. How many balls did the $120K buy last year?

Thanks for your honest opinion , I believe it was not very pleasant experince with one boy nearly being blinded in an out of school incident. While another did a runner from the school after cheating on a team run and not being selected for a European tour. Clearly the best players with attitude are not the best team players.
Kings had a similar problem in 2010 with 8 Australian schoolboys who were outplayed in the last 10 minutes( Kings leading 25-14) by a Newington team that refused to give up. So the possession of excellent players in the GPS does not assure success. Rather excellent coaching, team spirit, school spirit, mateship, and a belief in ones ability are qualities of greater value. But talent and depth do help but they are just one factor.

I heard Joeys beat them too on the bell with a late penalty. 8 champions do not beat a champion team.
