Kings vs. Newington :

It was a perfect day for rugby as The Kings School hosted Newington College for round 2 of the GPS Rugby competition proper, with Kings coming off a close loss to Shore and Newington banking the 2 points against Grammar in round 1.

An observer regarding a game featuring 10 tries would be forgiven for thinking that tackling may have been optional but nothing could be further from the truth as both teams put on a display of expansive and aggressive running rugby which was warmly appreciated by the gathered supporters of both teams.

The opening 10 minutes featured the "cut and thrust" expected as both teams felt each other out - tough and uncompromising stuff! Kings opened the scoring in the 12th minute with an unconverted try by 11. Wylie after a damaging run by 13. Foketi who dished off a great inside ball. 5 - 0 Kings.

Newington replied almost immediately with an unconverted try from 11. Milne after an aggressive restart from the visitors. In fact, Newingtons aggression at the restart became a feature of the game as it went on. Kings 10. Tulloch slotted a penalty goal in the 20th minute to take the score to 8 - 5 in the home teams favour, but once again Newington gained the advantage from the restart which, after several controlled and patient set phases through the forwards, culminated in 1. Pryor Lees crashing over for a try - also unconverted. Newington 10 - Kings 8.

Kings hit back hard from the kick off and after some sustained pressure in the opponents half 10. Tulloch scored a brilliant individual try featuring two of the best "fends" this correspondent has seen in a long time, including a "straight arm" on Milne that opened the path to the try line! Tulloch failed to convert his own try from out wide and the lead changed again : 13 - 10 to Kings.

Once again the kick off saw Newington gain the ascendancy through the athletic chase of Milne, and after a well worked lineout and a couple of phases up the middle the ball went wide to 14. Vlahos who scored, followed by a good conversion from 10. Lussick for Newington to go into half time leading 17 - 13. An absorbing half of rugby and a credit to both teams!

Newington commenced the second half on fire! A quick converted try from the kick off to 15. Hood took the score to 24 - 13 and it started to become apparent that the visitors pack were starting to dominate their opponents. Notwithstanding this, great "counter punching" from Kings resulted in a try to 12. Davies after turning over possession in the midfield. The try was converted : New 24 - Kings 20!

Again the restart featured Milne attacking the receiver and after several minutes of sustained pressure Newington's 12. Abrahams crashed over only to be denied by a desperate last ditch tackle which held him up over the line! From the ensuing 5 metre scrum Newingtons 7. Morris managed to scramble over for a 7 pointer. Newington struck again from the kick off with patient and controlled forward play until 2. Vea scored their final try out wide for a score line of New 36 - Kings 20 in the 56th minute.

14 minutes to go and it was looking like Newington would run away with the game - but not so! Kings mounted almost constant assaults on the visitors and gave it everything - only desperate defence saved New from conceding points! In the 65th minute Wylie scored a well deserved try on the back of some good build up by Foketi and Kings were still threatening. In the end, resolute defence from Newington saw them see off the challenge and the game was blown up with the final score : Newington 36 - Kings 27 .

An absolute cracker of a game - well done to both teams! Some observations :

When Newington stuck to their disciplined, patient and controlled game featuring long phases of forward play to set up rapid raids from the backs they were almost irresistible. In the last 15 minutes, whether through fatigue or over confidence, they almost allowed Kings - who never stopped coming - back into the game by losing their structure. The backs were pretty evenly matched, with both teams showing some great skills.

Stand out players for Kings were Tulloch, Foketi ( try + 2 try assists ), Wylie ( double ) and Randell worked hard. For Newington - the usual suspects! Milne, Tepai ( who put a massive hit on the Kings 15. Tourish in the 47th minute which set the scene for 2 ensuing tries! ) and Vlahos in the backs, and really you couldn't single out any one of the 8 forwards - they were all good!

Other Scores :
2nds - Kings 18 - Newington 10
3rds - Kings 17 - Newington 17

It is nice to see that people recognise a bit where grammar is in it all. The boys know that they're going up against players that have put more into rugby, many of whom hope to have a career in the sport, and the sgs boys just aim to give it they're all, even if defeats are usually inevitable.
Still, they could of played better, and hopefully they will improve a bit throughout the season.
Well so could 'view.
I must say I liked views idea of including the prior teams in which the players had played in the program: 13a's etc.
Silences some critics and puts a little pressure on others to do likewise.

Refereeing standards this week again low. In the unofficial 4th XV competition, Grammar 2s Vs View 4s, ref was unaware of substitution rules. After a Grammar prop had suffered a concussion and was removed from the field, Grammar opted for uncontested scrums. The ref claimed that for this to occur, Grammar must play with 14 men. While I acknowledge this may be the rule in other competitions, and the game was not official GPS, it was unacceptable for the ref not be aware of the rules in a situation which creates such a large handicap. Him referring the View players by first name did little to help his credibility. Poor show.

I did find it amusing however, when later in the match he told the View players to cut the backchat. It seems a boy can't have a chat with what was obviously his friend, albeit a suspiciously older one.

look no further than the host school - they appoint referees for their home grounds (1sts & 2nds excluded) and are responsible then for ensuring that their referees are "knowledgeable" of local (GPS) variations. Also meant to observe a 2 year window whenb appointing referees making it technically impossible for a schoolboy to control an open fixture.

Great report wreckless- an excellent summary of a very engaging and entertaining contest. New were deserved winners and warrant their favouritism for this year’s premiership especially with Joey’s loss to Scots. Kings can take some solace from making it such a willing contest for the majority of the game with some very brave performances amongst their forwards and some scintillating individual displays from their backs.

Whilst the game was won by New via a very dominant forwards display at the breakdown, Kings had some issues with injuries in their pack which did not assist their cause. They went into the match with Randall (7) and Jin (3) both returning from injury and Strachan (1) still carrying a leg injury from previous games. Despite this he battled on strongly for the whole game whilst being clearly hampered. The unlucky Jin lasted only the first 7 minutes of the game before coming off with a shoulder problem and he was replaced by young Bateman who had already played a full game at tight head in the seconds – he plugged away very bravely for the remainder of the match before being replaced looking utterly spent with about 12 minutes remaining. Randall was the pick of the Kings forwards but at times he too looked as if he was still troubled by injuries that have seen him miss a number of games this year. These are by no means excuses as New’s forwards were very well drilled in their breakdown play and certainly used their size to their advantage with disciplined, patient and at times relentless picking and driving and very physical cleaning out. The scrum and lineout contests were pretty even despite News bigger pack withKing’s lineout much improved on last week.

What a contest it was in the backs with some outstanding performances!! New shifted Taan Milne from his usual centre position to the wing and he was a standout for them in both attack and defence and particularly when contesting the ball in the air from kick offs. Tepai Moeroa made some great busts and his tackle on Tourish shook the whole ground and drew a huge gasp from the crowd. Matt Hood was also impressive at 15 for New and scored an excellent solo try fending off a number of Kings defenders. For Kings Foketi (13) was dangerous every time he touched the ball scoring himself as well as playing a role in a couple of other Kings tries whilst Max Wyllie (11) again showed what a fine finisher he is. As described by wreckless, Corey Tulloch (10) scored one of the finest individual tries seen in many a GPS game and Will Davies (12) again showed his class and speed with another fine individual effort.

Some final observations:
· New’s forwards will be the foundation for a premiership victory provided that they maintain the all round performance they displayed against Kings. They have the backs to take advantage of the opportunities their forwards deliver and all they need to do now is be consistent in their remaining games.
· Kings need to use Harry Jones more – he was lucky to touch the ball 3 times yesterday and it was a similar scenario last week against Shore – he’s absolute dynamite with the ball in hand and always delivers something when it gets out to him but its not getting there often enough at the moment – perhaps consideration needs to be given to playing him elsewhere in the backline.
· Whilst their 2012 campaign appears derailed with defeats in their first two games all is not lost for Kings as their seconds continued their fine form this season with a very good 18-10 win and their 16As trounced New 58-7.

Jones is on the "bad" wing for getting much ball: given that he is an excellent kick with both feet there seems absolutely no reason why he shouldn't get a go on the left being the side to which most backlines, at this level, most easily and quickly catch and pass - either that or pick a backline of left handers!

This suggestion has plenty of merit even though I think he played at 14 for GPS, NSW Schools and Oz Schools where he didn't lack opportunities on the right wing.

Good point CTPE - my understanding is that the 1st XV game was the only loss for Kings across all the age groups on Saturday! A great effort and can only be good for the future.

That's not correct. New would normally expect to in between 8 and 10 games games against Kings, who are always a challenge due to their depth. I'd expect the same happened yesterday. I do know the New 14D's smoked Kings by about 80 points.

I stand corrected! :). And well done to the Newington 14D's!

Should have qualified my comment in that this was anecdotal information - I certainly didn't see every game! Cheers, Wreckless

You are quite right about Angus Crichton - he was one of Scots best and for a boy in year 10 he shows very good maturity for his age. It's a big call but he has "future Wallaby" stamped on him.

Joeys vs Scots - If Scots back line can fire like this again, they will win the comp. Joeys pick and drove all day but when it came to spreading it they were shut down. Scots forwards tried hard to match it with the Joeys pack and did just enough to let their backs shine. I thought Kellaway and Crichton were Scots best, Kellaway as always was a nightmare with ball in hand and his try saving tackle on Pay was the biggest play of the day and Crichton was like Richie McCaw, through the side and off his feet at just about every break down, yet constantly coming out with the ball. Agree with gpsoldboy and have said for a long time that both these boys are the closest i have seen to future Wallabies. For Joeys Piggy Robinson was there best hands down, his scrummaging was dominate and every time he touched the ball he broke the line. Twice Joeys ran the length of the field, through their fastest players in Pay and Wilde and both times they were stopped just short. Scots really lift for the Joeys game and i think Joeys must do the same in future years, For Joeys, they must win every game from now on to have any hope of coming away with the title. For Scots, they must back this weeks performance up, if they do they will be title contenders.

Scots best - 7,8,10,11,13,15
Joeys best - 1,3,5,6,12,14

He played fullback last year in some of the representative games like Sydney u16s etc. so that may be another good option. Andrew Kellaway often gets moved to the wing in the big representative games too but he nearly always plays fullback for Scots.

Does anybody wish to comment on whether Joeys mystique and aura of invincibility finally died forever? As a GPS outsider but someone who played against Joeys in trial matches regularly during the 90's it is scary if not impossible to ponder if this is the case. I have a close friend who is a joeys old boy and as he put it to me "when you take away the one thing that separated us from the rest, all boarding, then it is inevitable that we would then be pegged back in amongst the group with the rest and become what they were to us back when we dominated." Does anybody else agree with this and as a result believe that Joeys days of turning out sides which dominate for years at a time have ended once and for all? Can Scots really beat Joeys four years in a row in 2013?
