At huntershill yesterday brother boyd adressed the boys at assembly saying it is important to finish off the summer season, and no special training for footy should be undertaken, he along with new sports master Newman both agree with this stance..however i have in good authority a lot of the boys are doing weights and fitness for cricket..

How did the scots boys fare against joeys in the under 16s anyone? Any standouts from either side?

One of the Scots 16s turned up at the Manly Colts 1s match at Concord, he lives at Manly and attends Scots! I think he had a brother (or good mate) playing for the Marlins. He advised me Scots 16As beat Joeys about 7 tries to 2.

No idea, but given the amount of returning players in the opens, they probably wouldn't have had that many players out.

You may also be interested to know that apparently Randell was playing in the 1s, not as a no.7 but as a no. 2.

There seems to be a fair bit of chat this year about 16yo's playing School 1sts.
are there more youngsters than usual playing up this year?
How many usually play 1sts at 16?
I would have thought only occasionally.

If a player is the second best player in his position then he'll generally play in the 2's in case of injury in the 1s.
It's pretty rare for a year 10 boy to play 1s.
In the past it was only really talented guys like Kurtley Beale and Hugh Roach who would do it.
In recent years the standard of specialist coaching, intensive strength and conditioning training and things like NTS squads have mean't there are more younger guys capable of mixing it with the year 11 and 12 boys

Newington has had three members of 2010 Year 12 selected in Australian Under 20 squad to go to Italy.

The important part is 2010... Yes they were a great side last year, but that was last year. Well done to them but who cares. This thread is about GPS 2011.

I still think Newington will come down with a bump this year when they realise just how much they relied on their stars. The players left behind are still pretty strong but they won't look anywhere near as good without 2, 8, 9 and 12 in the team. The next 3 weeks of trials should see whether the 2011 team are up to it. Looking forward to watching it unfold. Are Joeys sneaking up on the rail?

Newington are not complacent and to be honest the 2010 team were a once in a generation team. To put 90 points combined on Joeys and View in consecutive weeks has probably never been done before. No one expects the 2011 team to be that good.
Replacing Hugh Roach at hooker and Mark Bannon at half are the big challenges. The rest of the team is very strong across the park, even allowing for the loss of Joel Luani and Apolosi Latinipulu.
And experience counts - 9 of the boys were in the team that came from behind last year to beat the star studded Kings team at Parramatta - they know what it takes to win the gps.
They are a year older, a year more experienced and a year stronger. And they are supplemented by some talented year 11 and year 10 boys.
They have been working hard since November and there are no big heads.
The round one clash against View will be an absolute cracker.

New play Shore at Stanmore. My spies tell me this years Shore team are very very good and could be the darkhorse of the comp.

To what extent was last year St Josephs first XV team success (relative to talent on the park) due to amazing team work and leadership? I went to 3 St Josephs games last year and on each occasion they seemed substantially smaller and less skillful than the opposition but seemed to have real ticker. There was a forward in the team, I think his name was Williams, who seemed to genuinely inspire the team who seemed to lack any genuine talent.
My thoughts are that without this Williams chap (Captain I think) St Josephs would have been absolutely smashed last year. And my point going forward is that there seem to be a few on this site backing a revival of the team this year, but from my observations from last year unless they have more talent or another 'Williams' or two then I think they might struggle significantly and may still have another year to go before any serious revival.
Perhaps Newington will struggle as well without Roach, but then again they have a very large number backing up again. Just thoughts.

What were the other results over the weekend?

What are the games this weekend?

Also thanks to LG for the report for the Scots Joeys game. Anyone else keen to report on games they viewed?

To be fair St. Joseph's were without key players Tegart, Bond and Kay for the large part of last season. Fair comment for the most part, though i found Williams to be one of the more hardworking and impacting players in the competition.

Blindside I agree with much of what you've said however I think that some schools have a strict "no U16 plays opens" policy whilst others are happy to let talent find its natural level.
