And what of those scruffy nurf herders. Last weekend the slighter team were too shrewd, too well conditioned, too profligate at times for the lumbering, disjointed imperial walkers. It was your typical well drilled Joeys team that dismantled the Stormtroopers. The game revealed an effective attacking force that displayed the skill of the forwards whose deft ball work would split the Scots defence. The sight of a loose head prop piercing the line and running freely is one of nature’s most delightful and rare occurrences. It was of course the work rate of the backrow of cattle dogs that stood out. These doggies attacked anything that moved and had the foot down all game. God knows what they served in the refectory the night before. Or was it the Friday night run down the pizza place? Either way, it looked that Joeys seem to have the game, skill and speed to better most. Kings won’t be easy. The supporters and the dancing bloke in the cape and sword will demand premium offerings just like from mummy’s cheesemonger. While many might say Joeys in a blow out, I'm taking more conservative approach. Kings are one of those schools that lift when hosting Joeys. But, how far can they lift?

Shore being competitive ’is’ the rise. They hadn’t won a comp game in 6 years prior to 2022 due to being focused elsewhere. The turn around is dramatic, and good news for everyone. No one is suffering delusions of grandeur but they are now capable of a win, which seemed a long way off a few short years ago.

PS: Joeys has an extra ~500 kids in high school with a big portion in years 10-12 so a draw in that context for the smaller schools, is a thing.

Those numbers are from Wikipedia. The actual numbers are a bit higher, but not much. There is about 130 in yr7 and numbers increase to about 220 in yr12. Pretty close to 1000 kids.

I think according to the headmaster at the start of the year there are nearly 1100 at Joeys, about 60% board (even if most common postcode is 2110.

Kings has 1400 in the high school, Tudor house and prep numbers included in the data above.
I’d also consider Kings has the most diverse cultural background of students across the gps, not concentrated like most. Not all big rugby playing country bumpkins.
Nearly 100 more kids play soccer than rugby and AFL rears its head every now and then.
Prep program isn’t the best, rely on club juniors more for that. That’s (one of) the reasons the likes of Joeys, Waverley, Oakhill and Augustines kill it in the younger age groups.
Joeys has such a history steeped in rugby that it continues to attract a lot of talent through that channel.

Joeys only starts in year 7 ie no prep school. The boys who played rugby before arriving are very probably the minority and come from many local clubs , many played Aussie Rules, league or football before having a rugby ball grafted to their right hand.

WTF did GPS sports masters ever let AFL invade their sporting programs? Letting soccer in all those years ago was bad enough, but AFL?

Having to only field one soccer team per age group to produce a successful 1st Xi soccer team definitely helps with rugby numbers.

Joeys has more than one soccer team per age group.

It would be very helpful if people refrained from making up BS stories about Joeys to support their flawed arguments.

Agree but the reality is private schools prep rugby quality is low. I’d take the Gordon and Norths juniors any day of the week. Kings fed by Parramatta and Eastwood of whom very few find their way (directly ) to Kings.

Answer is simple. The time and effort it takes me to chase, collate and then publish tables that can be posted wearies me. I have limited time these days awake when I can operate at my best, most of my days are now spent in bed as I battle illness and chronic fatigue. To make life easier (if that is possible) on myself I limit the numbers AND make it clear there is a cut off. I have thrown out two who have not yet tipped and those places were filled by those who took the time to message me not long after the cutoff. I even gave up my spot to allow someone into this due to his inability to get service where he lives. I hope this explains why.

3rd XV Round 1 Preview
Well the wait is finally over, and the 3rd XV competition starts this Saturday 1 June.
Eight teams; seven rounds and another chance for one of these schools to lift the Col Windon Shield in August.

Scots 3rd XV v Joeys 3rd XV
An absolute blockbuster to open the season as defending premiers Scots take on last year’s joint runner up, Joeys at Bellevue Hill. Scots have performed well through the trials and will need to be at their best to defeat this strong Joeys side that has really switched into top gear in recent weeks, playing with pace and precision. This should be a classic match at Bellevue Hill in front of a big Scots home crowd. It will be no surprise to my regular readers that I am tipping the Cerise & Blue by a converted try.

Riverview 3rd XV v High 1st XV
Riverview have also been trialling well and will certainly prove too much for a Sydney Boys High 1st XV that was beaten convincingly by Joeys 3rds last week. The High 1sts are a team of great character and determination but will be playing a strong Riverview side who are almost certain to open their campaign with a big win.

Kings 3rd XV v Grammar 1st XV
An intriguing match-up at Gowan Brae with both sides having lost their most recent trials. Kings copped a heavy defeat from Shore last week while Grammar lost by a similar margin to St Pats 1sts. It appears that Grammar may have been facing tougher opposition in recent trials so I think they can notch their first win here, but it could go either way.

Shore 3rd XV v TAS 1st XV
We have seen very little of The Armidale School in the trial season and it’s really hard to know how they are going. They had an early loss to Kinross and now they make the first of four trips to Sydney for this season, to play Shore at Northbridge and I think it should be an interesting match. Shore are coming off good wins over Kings and Knox and I like their chances, but TAS always puts up a good contest in this competition.
