We are ending up with a group of talented dwarves and then wonder why we can't score tries against the ABs

They match our back row perfectly

well.....enjoy Berrick then you Tah fans! ;)

Mark this as the post that, in the eyes of Queensland posters, Berrick fell from all conquering talented superkid who'd will single handedly rescue the Reds and Wallabies, to a sookface kick-bore.

In the front row there are three nearly theres, Cowan, Kepu and Ma'afu, and two old codgers, Baxter and Dunning. One from each group will miss out, possibly Baxter and Ma'afu.

Al Baxter (NSW Waratahs),
Matt Dunning (NSW Waratahs),
Pekahou Cowan (Western Force),
Sekope Kepu (NSW Waratahs),
Salesi Ma’afu (Brumbies),
Ben Alexander (Brumbies),
Benn Robinson (NSW Waratahs),

They will take at least 5 props with Ma'afu is the least likely to tour. It will be between Kepu and Baxter for the last prop spot, Baxter being a better THP but with an average workrate. Kepu being dynamic but not great at scrum time.

from The Australian last Friday
SALESI Ma'afu has re-signed with the Brumbies for another three years, but they are unlikely to see him at pre-season training for the Super 14 series until after Christmas.

One of seven props named in the Wallabies' 43-man training squad, Ma'afu is almost certain to make the tour of Japan and Europe later this month. An aggressive and powerful frontrower, Ma'afu has been identified as a player with “limitless' propping potential. Wallabies coach Robbie Deans has highlighted the lack of depth at tighthead in Australian rugby, so it would make sense for Ma'afu to go away as a development player at least.

Wallabies 22-man squad members Ben Alexander, Benn Robinson and Pek Cowan will tour, with Al Baxter, Matt Dunning, Sekope Kepu and Ma'afu competing for the remaining two prop spots in the 35-man squad. Baxter is the most capped prop in Australian rugby, but it appears Deans is looking beyond him. In the space of two weeks during the Tri-Nations tournament, Baxter went from being the Wallabies' starting tighthead prop to exclusion from 22-man squad altogether. Baxter's hopes of touring may depend on the fitness of his NSW Waratahs team-mate Kepu, who is in doubt because of an ankle injury sustained in Randwick's loss to Sydney University in the Sydney club grand final last Sunday. If Kepu is ruled out, it may open the door for either Baxter or Dunning to make the tour.

Much will depend on what happens at the Wallabies' competitive training camp in Sydney, starting on Monday. But it appears Ma'afu is set to continue his climb up Australian rugby's frontrow ranks. Ma'afu, 26, has played 29 Super rugby games for the Brumbies since making his debut against the Chiefs in 2007. He represented Australia A in the pacific Nations Cup in 2007 and 2008 and he was a member of the Barbarians side that defeated the world champion Springboks at Twickenham in 2007. “I'm really happy to be staying at the Brumbies,” Ma'afu said. “They were the team that originally gave me my opportunity and I'm pleased I can repay the loyalty to them. I've got plenty of development left in my game. We made some big improvements under Youngy (Bill Young) this year, but there is still plenty of room to build on that. My goals are still to represent the Wallabies and win a Super rugby title. I'd love to do that with the Brumbies and I think it's something we can achieve in the next three years.”

So the pecking order for props goes:

Robinson/Alexander
Cowan
Kepu
Ma'afu
Dunning/Baxter

Baxter's gone from Australia's most-capped prop and first choice to the scrapheap in two short weeks. I'm no expert in the dark arts of the front row but I think he's improved enormously this year except for two things: scrums still collapse far too often when he's on the field and referees still look to ping him, justifiably or not.

If Kepu fails the fitness test Baxter and he will miss out.

wj, your loyalty and support for the Waratahs is to be greatly admired, but as one who played for the Tahs I must must say your enthusiasm is somewhat misguided. When the Wallabies are the subject of our discussions we must overlook our parochial preferences and consider the national good. Otherwise we're no better than some Queenslanders.

I hesitate to tell you, but: Carter doesn't rate. A classic case of the Peter Principle.

Lindo are you outing yourself as a Wagga Waratah or a NSW Waratah? If the latter, you'd better fess up old son.

Off topic, thanks for the tip re the Jugiong Cellar - nice people and good wine.

i called on plamer to be selected as a future prop ahead of cowen, not being anything other than a common sense user. cowen sucks the life outta games, he just has hair so it looks like he is doing stuff, in welengton he came on with ten to go and was puffed with 8 to go, Palmer and Robbo can hold our scrum up for the next ten years and actually push it forward.

Carter would do better than tyronne, dude is a genius!

As for Carter he is greatly overrated and a right pain in the arse. I wish someone would tell him to pull his head in and actually play.

I agree about Dan Palmer. Fantastic prospect but I suspect they may feel he is not the best prospect to play both sides which they seem to think Cowan is.
