You need cash not profits.

Not the same thing.

Edit: We know what you meant but cash is not the same as profits, which is what we meant.

You can make profits in the books and still have trouble paying wages.

You will soon find that out if you don't collect the money owed to you (already counted as profit) diligently, or if you use your bank account to do capital works or to buy capital goods (which don't affect your profit)—and yarda yarda—you could have trouble paying your workers.

That is not Accounting or Economics 101, it is everyday business.

On the other side of things you can make losses for a while and still pay wages because some of the expenses that reduce your profits are not cash items.

You can write things off the books, which can take you into loss, but no cash is involved.

And you can sell stuff like property at a loss, but increase your bank balance—and yarda yarda.

You can also borrow money if the bank thinks you're good for it down the track.
.
You can only pay wages from your profits cash surpluses and borrowings.

Fixed.

Well there you go, I learnt more in the last half hour than I did in 2 year of economics at school.;)

Luckily I haven't pursued a career in economics. Fascinating that you can lose money and still pay CEO's big bucks. I guess that's where the GFC comes in:)

My involvement in the vastly overrated discipline of economics goes back over half a century, but I confess I have not previously encountered the principle you espouse, QH. Were it so, at any one time there would be a veritable army of unpaid workers.

Perhaps you were not paying attention in that particular period. Perfectly understandable. Distractions abound in Year 11.
.

Good point Bruce. There would be no Commonwealth public servants if you had to make a profit to pay wages :D

On the subject of team names, are we just presuming that the country teams of QLD and NSW will not adopt the Cockatoos/Heelers monikers? Have I missed some official word on this? I get the fact that by nature they are different - being origin based compared to rep based. Does this preclude an alignment between the NRC teams and the rep sides that we have had until now?

I think I am confused on whether the NRC teams are the birthing of wholly separate franchise unions that need their own identity or are they more like rep sides?

It seems like the 2nd QLD team is going to be a Gold Coast based team backed by Bond University. The country tag is just something to make it palatable for the rest of the Rugby community and a away for it to justify the playing talent it will need from else where as not one of the Bond Qld Premier Rugby players will be good enough to the NRC.

It's a shame that the Brisbane gay team is called the Huslters as this would be a good name for this Bond Uni NRC team given Australia's first private university was started by the infamous Alan Bond. Perhaps they could be called the Bond Uni Fleecers.

You are on to something here @The Coach. Chuck in about 1/2 of the State Public Servants and we are cooking with gas.

Keep Police, Fireys, Ambos, Teachers, Doctors, Nurses Physios, and allied health workers, Garbos, Utilities workers, give the Defence Force a couple of zodiacs, a Cessna 172 and some 4WD to rescue stranded motorists. Burn Canberra to the ground. Job done.

Apparently, profitability has not been a measure of performance of the CEO of the ARU for many years.
But funnily enough, for a CEO that professed that a winning Wallaby team was imperative for the financial health of the Organisation, that also was not a measure.
It's so fucking confusing for me,thankfully we were in such good hands.
Where would we be, if JON didn't do such a great job, however he was measured?
Edit: how the fuck WAS he measured?

Interesting topic worthy of discussion, but more relevant in another thread.. Let's keep this directly about the NRC

interesting tonight in the rebs brums game the quick drop goal. I know it would mean the place kick loses a bit of relevance but looking into that (from sevens) for conversions would be interesting.

Wow. I am not sure you are being entirely fair with your vilification.

On a different note, I looked at what the country bodies have said on the NRC teams, and came across the NSWCRU's statement on their website which gives clarity to their position on the NSW country based NRC team. In effect they will stand to the side and applaud their efforts but the entity is entirely separate from them.

I don't see the same message coming from the QCRU or QRU, but instead that the team is to be 'origin based'. That seems to indicate that the team is more of a rep side that will train and play out of the GC facility. Now if the GDCRU is handed coaching and training responsibilities I think criticism is warranted. I don't think this is what was revealed this week, all I read was that the GC club will provide their grounds as a training/playing facility. I would think it more likely that the QRU will look to the QCRU to provide admin, and coaching staff.

Unless, and here I go back to one of my original questions, I have missed some official word on this.

Here is more guess at the Melbourne Rebel Rising where I think there may be 4 Rebel Wallabies in Smith, Pyle, Higinbotham and Burgess. I am trying to provide the best possible team for the Rising even if some players could return to Sydney over others. Also I have chosen some players they may wish to put extra development in (Cruze Ah Nau over Laurie Weeks). I have a Rebels split of 10 forwards 6 Backs with maybe 4 EPS players. My team as follows: Max Lahiff; Paul Alo Emile; Cruze Ah Nau; Fereti Sa'aga; Arun Arundell; Pat Leafa; Steve Fualau; Moli Sooaemalelagi depends on injury or Andrew Barber; Caydern Neville; Sam Jeffries; Luke Jones; Ta Hosea; Colby Fainga'a; Scott Fuglistaller; Sean McMahon; Jack De Guingand; Brendan Westney; Nick Stirzaker; Lualua Vailoaloa or Junior Paila; Thomas Bohle; Bryce Hegarty; Patolo Toeta; Mitch Inman; Lloyd Johannson; Chris Slade; Tom English; Kemu Valetini; Telusa Veainu; Joe Kamana; Jason Woodward; Bill Valetini; and Sakaria Noa. I was tempted to chose on name only Powerhouse Fullback Romeo Ah Fuuk. Contracted players to miss out Laurie Weeks; Eddie Aholelei; Lopeti Timani; Jordy Reid; Ben Meehan; Jack Debreczeni; Tom Kingston; Angus Roberts; Alex Rokobaro; and Lalakai Foketi

I hope the ARU come up with some clever marketing ideas to promote the NRC. They really need innovative ideas to draw people to the matches since Fox will only be televising one each week.

I hope there are things like double header matches, perhaps in the afternoon or maybe even on a sunday to avoid conflict with other codes and matches that are usually in the evening. Fox might even decide to televise both in such an event.

Rather then all this talk about changing the rules of the game, they really need some smart marketing to get people to come along to the game. Competitions, prizes for the public etc, anything to get people involved and keep the NRC in front of their faces.

Parse, you've used the ARU and clever marketing ideas in the one sentence. I've never noted a connection between the two before;).

Many of use have hoped for this for some years, and we are still unfulfilled.

Will the Melbourne Rising have the House of the Rising Sun by Eric Burdon and the Animals or L.A. Woman (Mr Mojo Risin') by The Doors as their theme song? ;)
