Hey Dave (or anyone else), what're your thoughts on Donlan v Lucas for the 9 jumper at the Marlins this year?

I'm pleased to see Tim in 1sts after a disappointing time at the Wicks, but will he hold off Lucas this year?

.

Hope form / game plan selects positions through out the whole club & year.
I think the outcome of last years finals may have been different if we didn't take 4 Loosie's into the semi (Swanny being the 4th Loosie).

Lucas is all class.
Donlan has been on fire in his first 3 games.
I also reckon Woods and Crerar will also get game time in ones this year as well and there will be some healthy competition.

I know that doesn't answer your question, but honest competition from within is good - we can only wait and see.

What i'm really looking forward to this year is Marshall Milroy step up into coaching - he has an increadible read of the game and hope this gift filters through into game day.

3s and 4s were played out at Colleagues so I got there to watch 3s warm up and walk the golf course.

Wet track with a persistent drizzle – a recipe for a hard slog with errors.
2nds hard slog with only one try being scored by our new number 8 Kava - and very few errors, a great entree for 1sts.
Easts have strengthened their players stock from previous years – and turned up to play rugby. This is a game that I feel like we dominated but never closed out – a tense hard fought game with some epic defensive work;
Kava continuously broke / bent the line with some huge ball carries and his body height in contact has improved enormously since round one.
Daniels, Elliot and Dombkins were all over the park pulling down players and keeping the scoresheet clean.
The weather didn’t really allow wide open attacking rugby so can’t share much apart from the work horses up front.
It was great to see Zip got on for the last 20.

1sts – how good were those scrums.
The scrums proved to be a very even contest – both sets of tight 5 were absolute power houses, and I think our forwards just one the battle because of their mobility – Maraki and Porecki both had huge games and Tank was the anchor.
Up until the 20 minute mark we had great control of the game, ball retention was high, Donlan had great distribution and Lane was playing his role – then Reece took a knock to his ankle and went off and the continuity slipped only a small margin.

Hard rugby played and a better result than my last visit to Woolahra.

I was impressed by the performance of the replacement loose head for the Beasts, I did catch that he had played for Australian Schoolboys.

Manly a titch fortunate, from what I saw. Angus Pulver did okay.

Porecki did some good things. As usual.

Clay Brodie was the replacement Prop for the Beasties @Wamberal, but it was his brother Rhys, that had played for Australian Schoolboys.
Rhys is in Easts Team Rehab.

Yes interesting game
We had the first 20,
Then a tight 40,
Beasties had the last 20,
There was a breeze that did benefited the team running right to left - allowed east to fly the spinica in the second half.

It was actually a pretty good game, under the conditions. I only saw the second half (on the telly).

The first half was better than the second - especially the first 20.

Been said on the Shute thread - the scrums were a TITANIC battle - and enjoyable to watch.

There we go coach another take on it;

As I said above Lucas is all class, and would have been my first choice, given he came back after round one he is now having to earn his spot - and in my eyes that's the way it should be.

On the weekend Donlan had very good & safe game - but it was wet so played safe.
Lucas came on and whilst i think he added a bit more spark than Donlan he got caught out behind a couple of scrums / rucks.n As Matty said - "I hadn't played much footy before i came down here" so really looking forward to them lifting the game of all the 9's in the club.

Hey Dave , I found this comment in the manly daily a concern (While Manly toughed out a victory in the wet conditions, Easts got on top of Manly’s usually rock solid scrum)
Last year the MMM's scrum was by far the best in the comp.
No Cocca last weekend was he injured ?? And has Lewis done enough in seconds to be recalled.Any word regarding Jim Gentles return?

I saw the game - and I'll use the words a good concern to have, as the scrum was a battle.
Did you get out to the game?

I was there - as I have said the scrums were TITANIC even full backs would have enjoyed the battle.

Great measuring stick on the weekend - I'm happy - as it was a battle and we come back better. Hard game with rain and wind to get a good gauge - they may have come home stronger in the scrums with their replacements, but I think in the loose we where better.

The score line in the 2 halves showed which way the wind was blowing.

Cocca - away.
Lewis & Maraki both playing good rugby.
Gentle - I think he is close to making a comeback as a Fresh reserve in 3s.
So the above I suggest they came over the top with their replacements - if you add Cocca & Gentle it may have been us coming home over the top.

Wouldn't mind an email from the readers that don't post on the status of
Vaevae.
Reece.
Vaka.

Bit of a different view for Marlins v Uni game.
if i was Uni's coach I'd be saying;
we lost it, they didn't win it.
we camped on there line and didn't convert.
they made a couple of visits and converted on each.
we spilled quite a bit of ball, and they kept their floor rather clean.
some how i don't think Malone would have been simply saying / explaining that simple story.

So if some of their ball stuck, it could have been allot closer in the last 10.
We played some great % rugby, and supported the ball - liked that we broke the ad line most carries, and DA / Ale ensured quick ball.
Also like that we got a number of line out steels against some tall timber.
Yesterday i had my 3 Lucas / 2 Lane / 1 Harry.
Watching it this morn - Lucas - and quite a be worthy mentions so will just stick with the 3 points.

Motto to my story - a win is a win yes but there would be an element of truth if Malone was blowing up about the loss "because they lost it"

Big 2 weeks at home coming up.

I'd love to see a power house game from our 1, 2, 3 - steak a claim lads
Hard running rugby from the 4 - 8 bending the Highlanders in tight.
With width, speed and plenty of Oliver Pies for our first game at home.

Just general thoughts Manly last season were enormous across the grades probably slightly bigger than Eastwood.

They seem to have lost some of that size through the grades but are still very strong.

Will be another top 3 or 4 year as a club which shall not surprise anyone.

Thoughts on yesterday's games Dave?

Aussie I had to be social yesterday, and found it hard to intently watch the game and also hold a conversation at the same time - so I'll give it a crack;
last 20 in 4's, had no idea what the score was but some really enjoyable rugby to watch from both sides. Both teams challenged themselves in the forwards and the backs plays some good rugby - Manly looked a 10 point the better side and when i heard the full time score i thought it faltered us (with the 20 i saw), I believe we put on 30 in the first half.

3s, got to watch this game, gee it frustrated me - we probably only played 15 minutes in that game and it yielded 28 points. Our 8 was clearly the dominant forward pack in the set piece, and also the ruck. We need to earn the right to go wide and not get to sexy with our play. I probably counted a dozen times a really powful set piece didn't convert 2nd phase play - and that frustrated me.
Any way moving on;

2s, social, we won and didn't get the bonus point which i always want.

1s, Last week we were clinical and stopped a very committed uni team from scoring for 73 minutes. Yesterdays game was a good one to get out of the system - i thought it was a scrappy tussle that we had under control rather than a game we should have put away. In the 8 the only absentee is Greg Petersen and I think we make up for him in mobility.
We also have a few of the tight 5 on their way back from injury.

I'm looking forward to getting a whole truckload of backs back shortly and that depth and power will no doubt filter through. (Ryan Squires, Jacob Woodhouse, Pete Gilmore, Zip Northam, Lui Sialle, Kayse Greer, Vinnie Baranyi, Vae Vae - think i missed a couple).

Thought Gower, BJ, & Porecki had great games.

Aussie - as for yesterday pleased to get a game like that behind us, and we have some big weeks ahead.

Good to see our colts got up yesterday against a good Gordon side, after last week unluckily going down to uni in a close one.
