@mst - best leave this alone now, please, you're not advancing discussion at all, just stirring the pot. I think you've made whatever point you wanted to make.

Done - I apologise to everyone in the forum. I took the bait when I normally ignore.

I still maintain that, on the whole, the SA refs are the best refs going around.

The two axed are not the typical SA referee.

Is that official? Has been he been sacked?

Lourens has also been stood down from this weekends game he was due to ref, but Berry wasn't scheduled to ref any this weekend.

Berry was scheduled to be an assistant referee for the next two weekends which has now been canned.

Found a press release, all I heard was "Berry axed" on the radio tonight.

Berry not sacked, just stood down.

Berry, Gardner, Lees and O'Brien stood down for a few rounds.

South African Lourens van der Merwe, Argentine Francisco Pastrana and Australian James Leckie all cut from the roster completely.

They are down to 14 refs after cutting 3 and losing another to injury. 14 refs is fairly bare boned when 7 need to start every week.

edit: with the extra four who have been stood down, they are down to 10 refs for the next couple of rounds. I wouldn't expect the four who have been stood down to get many more ref appointments for the top teams, either.

Wow, any thought that they weren't taking it seriously can be shot down. Very swift response from Bray.

I agree. The Reds have got the Wyatt Crockett, Al Baxter syndrome going. Beau Robinson in particular has a massive penalty target on his back. He needs to call Richie or Matt Hodgson or George Smith to borrow the cloak...

But that doesn't explain the penalties/free kicks from the scrums, where the Reds unfairly were hardest hit by the whistle.

Bray also has rejected neutral refs.

I really believe that to keep fans happy, they need to have neutral refs. This is not necessarily an indictment on the refs themselves, but more a solution to the public's perception that the refs support their own country to a degree, whether they do or not.
And sometimes, they definitely do, which doesn't help the 'keep it as it is' supporters.

The scrums are a lottery (borderline farcical) no matter who the ref is. I seriously believe that from what we have seen so far in this years S15 that teams do not know when to push or hold given the timing of the put ins are in the hands of the ref. there was not one game on the weekend that didn't have me shaking my head and thinking the scrum is turning into an absolute blight on the game.

I really don't think you can claim that there was anything particularly wrong with the refereeing in the Sharks game. The two points of contention seem to be that Coetzee was allowed too much leeway at the breakdown which happens regularly (not in terms of Coetzee but in terms of a flanker, mostly from the home team getting away with more than they should) and the interaction between Jannie du Plessis and the referee which seems a total storm in a teacup.

I 100% agree that Berry had a shocker two weeks in a row and cost both the Blues and Reds the respective games but I really don't feel like this is an issue with South African referees overall.

It is an issue with Stuart Berry.

I'm not at all suggesting this is an issue with South African referees, who are mostly the best ones out there.

This is most definitely an issue with Stuart Berry and the bloke that keeps selecting him.

Not sure how serious he has taken Berry's performance. Simply resting him rather than cutting him alltogether.

The performance was abysmal - does he think that Berry will magically get better in a few weeks time?
