I'd agree with you, however the powers that the CMC has are extraordinary and you are breaking the law by using your "right to remain silent"

Not completely accurate. The CCC does have extreme powers to summons people to appear and answer questions. However, once an individual is charged, that person is entitled to their right to silence (the High Court has dealt with this issue).

The question remains, whether Hunt was summonsed before the CCC before he was charged. If so it is very "sharp practice" by the CCC and questions may be raised over the admissibility of that evidence. It's still very much a grey area of the law.

I've thought for a number of years that the NRL should just own their bad behaviour and notoriety and profit off it.

A tell all interview from Greg Bird and his girlfriend about the time he threw a glass at her and blamed his mate who was out playing golf.

An instructional video from Todd Carney on 'bubbling'.

Nate Myles about how drunk you have to be to mistake a hotel corridor for the bathroom of your hotel room (I swear both the doors looked the same).

A classic tale from Brad Fittler about the time he woke up on the footpath outside Glebe Police Station after a night on the tiles.

The Burning Palm Motel at Dubbo.

If this was the "Loig Handbags", "Loig gives me the sh!ts", or the "All Time Crims XII" thread then one could be tempted to add that the Coogee Bay Hotel were once thinking of giving John Hopoate a gig as a Dessert Waiter. As it isn't can, we refocus on the topic of this thread?

<snip> I suppose it's wise not to throw too many stones at other codes/sports as we are just a reflection of society with similar percentages of stupidity probably lurking under the surface .
Excluding the NZ Warriors, there are 15 professional teams in Mungoland, with a further 15 apprenticeship professional teams in the <car makers> cup. Estimating a squad size of 30 in each of these, that means that there are around 900 professional athletes in their code in Australia. Compare that to the 150 professional Rugby athletes, and the Dark Side will mathematically have 6 times as many "problem children" and "problems".

They typically have no problem meeting this KPI.

Would be interesting to see a comparison with AFL, NBA, NFL, Soccer, Baseball etc. Is mungo-ball really worse? Or is it just because it is our most popular domestic sport (in NSW/ACT) that we notice it more.

I think part of the problem in loig is the fact that it is quite possible, pretty common I think, for kids as young as 14 to be signed up to a professional contract at an NRL club.

So the kid and his family now have some spare money, his education (if it ever was important) is now forgotten, and all his time is devoted to making it. He imbibes the culture of the game, with little competitive alternative - certainly nothing of much educational value.

If the NRL franchise has a healthy culture, he has a chance to grow into a responsible young man, if it doesn't, he will follow suit.

^^^^^^ I'm not so sure about that.

Our nephew played age-group rep league back in NZ & was being actively scouted by multiple NRL clubs as a 16yo. Every Club that talked to his parents emphasised the academic excellence of their associated schools & when told of nephew's passion for drawing how great their graphic design/ arts programme was.

Under-20's players aren't allowed to train with the first-graders, aren't allowed to train at all until the afternoon/ evening, and are required to be enrolled at uni, TAFE or local equivalent. Boys will either be billeted with families from similar backgrounds (e.g. PI kids with PI families) or live in hostels with full-time, live-in parent substitutes. No expense is spared but obviously it doesn't always work, as in the case of the young bloke a couple of years back who got so homesick & messed up he took his own life. But it's certainly not a case of a 15/16yo being handed a shitload of cash & left to his own devises....

Nephew BTW suffered a compound dislocated fracture to the ankle while trialling for Waikato U16's (whom he'd already played for the year before) & subsequently disregarded his rehab programme resulting in additional tendon & ligament damage, footy career over.

yeap, it seems many of us qlders have been hearing the same rumour regarding said broncos star for over a decade. Cant wait to see the Bronco Times (courier mail) spin this one
Makes you wonder doesn't it. It's the worst kept secret in QLD. I've been overseas for the last 10+ years and even I heard that rumour during a few quick visits. Interesting times ahead.

I realise it's a standard of the forum to play the ball and not the man but i cant help myself....

georgina robinson. I have really grown to loath you. Most of it comes from my bitterness of how you (and your colleagues) played an active roll in the public hanging of Ewen Mckenzie and his banishment from Australian Rugby.

And maybe i am bitter. but Georgina you truly dont care who you step on to sell papers.

Tonight on Rugby HQ the panel was talking about Hunt being supported by the Reds. All Georgina had to point out was that he's "bringing the game into disrepute". i nearly put a hole in my flat-screen. What does that even mean you idiot. you're missing the point.

I realise that standard NRL and ARU contracts have contractual clauses which deal with the idea of "bringing the game into disrepute", but that doesn't get around the fact that Hunt is guilty of nothing at this stage. If anything his only criticism in that regard can be that he associated with some people that were "potentially" involved in criminal activity...if that's the threshold for bringing the game into disrepute well then fuck, you might as well sack most of the professional footballs in this country.

Some journos just seem to have no concept of the presumption of innocence. this is something I'm passionate about.

Rant over. no more drinking and off to bed.

...love ya georgina! ;)

I agree with your sentiment but wish a coach or GM of a team would tell the truth.

How about a press release that says something like-

the Reds will support Khunt if found innocent but the Reds support a healthy lifestyle and any person who is prove to be involved in dealing illicit drugs deserves no respect from society and especially deserves no assistance from a professional sporting team.

The Reds hope that Khunt is not guilty but do not want to risk being involved with the scum of society and have chosen to suspend Khunt for the Reds team until he can prove he is innocent. We feel as an organisation that we need to set ourselves apart from other teams an other codes and show that any allegation of supplying illicit drugs is not acceptable.

We wish Khunt all the best while he attempts to show he is innocent and if this occurs would welcome him back to the team .

As an organisation we will always strive to be drug free and hope that Rugby Union can set itself apart from other sports by having a true zero tolerance policy regardless of the skill level of a player involved in illegal activities.

This will never occur, but if Khunt is found guilty then the Reds press conferences will always show support for a drug supplier

The thread is slowly grinding or slowing down.

Half a dozen Broncs and Suns and a couple of Retired State of Origins legends should kick it back into "gear". From my unconfirmed source one of those guys will stun me , if indeed true

Don't you dare say his name. Let sleeping dogs lie. ;) (I think I know who youre talking about. Worst kept secret in Brisbane)

Think the academic excellence bit is a touch of bs, look at all the top league schools in the country (many are associated with a NRL club or two) and then compare them to hsc results. I had a lot of friends that went to endeavour sports that played league, nearly all of them were in a special class called "team class" which involved doing the absolute minimum for them to stay enrolled in high school and meant the did not receive a uai/atar. I imagine the same could be said about keebra park, Westfield, hills and palm beach currumbine etc. I expect some of the semi private catholic schools would be a bit more academic driven though

I think a couple of her points were quite salient though.

It's somewhat irrelevant that the accusations relate to a time before he was contracted to rugby. He's with the Reds and the ARU now and that is what is being reflected.

I completely get the innocent until proven guilty concept and agree but it isn't nearly that simple. Damage to team and sport images as well as the sponsor brands doesn't wait on hold until there is an outcome. The damage starts immediately and at some point people may want to distance themselves from that.

I think the approach so far is the smart one. Stand him down until more information emerges after his first court appearance.

It really is a bit of a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation for all involved.
