IRB U/20 Tournament and Oz Squad

There are 30 games in the tournament and 16 are being televised, and all of those will be televised on FoxSports.

As usual the schedule sucks from an Oz point of view. All the finals and the match for 3rd and 4th place will be televised but the only pool game involving Oz will be their game against France.

All teams play in 3 pool games. 12 pool games get broadcast. New Zealand, South Africa, England, Argentina, Italy and Wales get all their pool games televised and Ireland and Scotland get two. A lot of that is based on who plays whom, with the European market favoured, though France, like Oz, gets only one pool game. Tonga and Fiji don't get any games televised and both are in the pool of Oz and France.

The anomaly is that NZ v Argentina gets televised, but that decision was probably predicated on the popularity that NZ brings to any rugby tournament. Let's hope that Oz gets a 2nd European pool opponent, especially England, next year. That would increase our chances of getting a second pool game on TV.

We talked about the broadcasting schedule last year and we whinged about it. Some folks said the IRB should get the broadcaster to televise all the games. I said that if the IRB could make money out of it they would, since there would be no reason not to do it, and they would get more world wide viewers.

Some suggested that the ARU should finance the broadcasting of the other two Oz games as a separate contract with the IRB and I said that the IRB would say "Show me the money." Some suggested that the ARU should send their own production team over for the two missing Oz pool games and I made the same comment.

But it sucks all the same.

PS - Watching the livestreaming of any of the 16 games on the IRB website is legal.

Its a matter of opinion to actually what is right, and given the circumstances, 'what is right' varies greatly between the Brumbies and the Reds..

Do you even know what Shipperly's opinion on the subject is? He has already played in a JWC GF, how do you know his preference isnt to represent the Reds in a possible finals push?

There are other players going to Italy who have already played in a JWC and expressed interest to stay behind...

that's a rather vague comment.....

But everyone's trying to move on slim, let it go...

I'm really excited about our chances this tournament. We have a lot of guys who have played Super rugby or at least been apart of a Super rugby environment. Most other countries including NZ can't say the same.

It's not that vague... as those players have already been mentioned...

But the point that Shipperley has already played in a JWC final and may have expressed interest to stay behind is not really the issue...

I don't know...

I'm not sure if this years team is as strong as last years...

Last year the backline was loaded with good players like Nic White, Matt To'omua, Robbie Coleman, Luke Morahan, Justin Turner etc

Yep that backline was probably best in the comp. The forwards were not but this time it's reversed and we all know how important a good pack is.

I dunno, last years pack had Jake Schatz, Liam Gill, Ed Quirk, Greg Peterson, Pheonix Battye, Michael Hooper, Colby Fainga'a, Luke Jones, and close to the same front row last this years. Not much between last years pack and this years, albeit a years experience and development for a lot of those returning.

But that's exactly why the forwards will be good this year. Last year we had one of the youngest teams, not many other teams had players returning. Now those players have another pre-season and half a season of Super rugby under them. They should be twice as good as last year.

Joel Faulkner is out with a shoulder injury. Anyone have an idea who the next outside back off the cab rank is?

Bill Meakes and Jacob Woodhouse have been selected for Joel Faulkner and Dom Shipperley respectively.

Very solid and capable replacements. Great that they joined the squad from day one when they assembled this past Friday and will soon be on their way to the AIS European Training Centre in Varesse, Italy via London.

Here is the squad and individual profiles.

Reads like Gordon Bray was enlisted to pen some of the profiles.

Fluent in German and proud of his red hair, Quirk claims he has to kiss his mouth guard case before each game for good luck

Away from the game, Tim works as a personal trainer, can play the drums, and the dreadlocked prop’s parents both work as ministers.

I have a strong hunch Link will pull Gill from the comp, because Quirk is the only other bloke who has payed 7 and he is going to Italy as well. This would means Shatz would be our 7, which is not the end of the world but I think Gill will be playing in Red and not Gold in the next couple of weeks.

I agree whole heartedly. Also take into account the fact we already have 2 very able opensides in Fiangaa and hooper, as well as quirk who has played open side at super rugby level.

The other provinces can whinge about it all they like. But at the end of the day, if the ball was in their court and they were starring down the barrel of australia's first super rugby title in many years without an open side flanker in the squad, I would feel exactly the same way.

It is better for Gill's development that he start for the reds in a finals series than sit on the bench (behind captain colby) for the U20. If worse comes to worse they could probably fly him over for the finals once the super rugby is finished.

Very interesting that Simon M is listed as a 12, and the only player bracketed as a specialist fullback is Jacob Woodhouse.
