Enough already you guys.
On Wykes and Pyle:
Hugh plays for my local club the Rats. He's found his way back to Melbourne where he went to school; so I hope that he remembers how to make the return journey to Rat Park. He was a Rat's Colt and got promoted to the Ones in Grade 2 years ago when he was 20 and washing dishes for a living.
He looked likely but skinny at 112kgs in those days and needed some filling out to help with grunt work. He played a MOTM game against Randwick that year and looked good at Manly Oval in 2010. I was looking forward to see him progress but he got injured and dropped out of sight for most of the season.
I wrote earlier this year that he wasn't ready for Super rugby at the minute, but that minute was about April last year when I saw him last. What a difference a year makes. Now he is a strapping young man and we will be keeping our eye on him for the future.
I always thought that Wykes had potential to be a fine/lock 6 at the Super level, but he was just missing that physical edge. As a couple of seasons went by I doubted that he would get it but he is proving me wrong this year and good for him. I just reminds us that we shouldn't be too impatient with young forwards. They need time to grow - and in more ways than one.
He is more skilful than Pyle but is probably a bit light to be a specialist starting lock week in, week out. The Rat will likely end up being handier in the engine room.
There was another young lock who was almost a clone of Wykes and even had the same hairdo: Steve Mafi. He had a similar build and skills, and limitations, but took a different career path before his time. A pity he is not in Oz this year as he would have been ready and starting for the Tahs. O'Connor would never have got his late contract.
Sliding doors - he's ready now and has started for the Leicester Tigers in the last two games.
