Re: Folau

surely we dont need a new thread for every potential signing with the Rebels

Outside center would be his spot, not quick enough for the wing spot in Union. As long as the bombs are pin point we should be seeing quite a few tries from bombs.

The bomb close to the line is not a skill we see much in Oz rugby. Our inside backs are more familiar with stupid chips and grubbers at inopportune times.
I think we have enough 13 candidates developing at the moment without Folau, as talented as he undoubtedly is. Horne, Chambers, AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), Ioane, and maybe Gasnier (who at least has a couple of seasons of rugby under his belt now)with some old stagers who might have a trick or two left - Morty, Cross.

We may have enough for the Wallabies, but the stronger the S15 is, the stronger rugby in Australia will become.

Agreed, can't hurt have more depth in Aus. rugby. His value will come from putting bums on seats in Melbourne.

Guys, have we learned nothing. He won't come to Rugby for a S15 contract. He'll be getting paid that plus more from an ARU top-up (deserved or otherwise), and 3rd party payments. Will he then be told just to ply his trade in Super Rugby, or will he be fast-tracked to Wallaby squads before becoming disillusioned about lack of game time and take his toys and all his money back to League?
If that money is available, I would rather see it spent elsewhere than in a position where we are not completely bereft. Get some decent RUGBY players back from OS.

Well, Noddy, I could trawl through Lindommer's list to get a few, but my point was more that I think the money that would be spent there would be better spent elsewhere. We pay over the odds for high profile Leaguies, and it seems not to be well spent (historically).

i think we will find that the Folau contract is made up of mainly third party contracts as opposed to those league players in the past who have had the bulk of there contract made up from the ARU...

Like others have said, I'd consider it well-spent advertising dollars that may also pay some fantastic dividends for the Wallabies. Not necessarily in 2011, but beyond. Honestly, this kid's a freak that has age, genetics and skill on his side.

L & Gs,

Initially I thought the story on Folau signing with the Rebels was another News Corp sensational beat up.
However it appears to be gaining legs and perhaps a smigen of credability.

Has any one heard any rumours or word on the street?

I heard from a surf boat rower quite a few months ago that he was very likely to sign. The thing he was most worried about was the drinking culture of rugby... :nta:

Folau's decision is understood to be based around lifestyle as much as money. The Herald believes he stands to earn just over $600,000 a season with the Rebels, with the ARU providing $100,000 to top up a base salary of $140,000. The rest of his income would comprise third-party payments, which are understood to total about $250,000, and match payments of $6000 for every Super 15 game.

He could also earn $12,000 per Test if selected by the Wallabies.

wow! Bargain I reckon. ARU only pays $100k? Deal of the century. Well not quite, but bloody good.

Bloody oath Nod. When does this bloke become available for Wallaby selection? I'm tempted to throw him onto the test bench even though he's not proved anything in union.

yeah - $100000 for a guy who has never played the game (ie he lacks essential skills for playing it), from an organisation (the ARU) that has a $279000 defecit for the year- bargain.

Just heard a clip of Harold Mitchell giving a very half-hearted denial that Folau has been signed. "I have become very good at denying the seemingly obvious" was my favourite quote.

his PR value in Melbourne alone would be worth double that

If these amounts are to be believed then on balance it's a good investment.

Pro: Age, Profile in Melbourne, athleticism, fitness, tee-totalling Morman (i.e. unlikely to go off the rails), has achieved a great deal in Mungoball, will be playing alongside Mortlock and other leaders at the Rebels.

Cons: Never played rugby, earning an ARU top-up without earning Wallaby selection

But the last thing I want to see is a heap of posters select a Wallaby 2011 or RWC or future XV including Folau until he actually plays the game, adapts his play and out performs incumbants and other challengers. We can hope he turns out to be as effective as Ioane, but until he actually plays that way please assume he'll walk into Wallaby gold.
