Played prop for St Laurences College in Brissie, got selected to represent higher but he won a AIS scholarship for weightlifting so he persued that path instead... Even at school he was a massive dude, probably around 120kg in year 12. He had a fair bit of talent, and was a rock in the scrum, a shame he didn't keep playing union, he has that raw power that props need.

Not so sure that Nigel S-Smith was accurate in his assessment (see previous posts) and prediction of Gold for the Men in Gold.

Have faith my son. England very big and aggressive and to some extent put us off our game by bustling us. We will improve and the Gods are shining on us with Kenya beating Samoa. England by virtue of their win now face the current No 1 rated team Samoa while we face Kenya.

Kenya will be hard to beat but I would prefer to face them than a Samoan team with IRB Sevens Player of the Year Mikaele Pesamino playing.

Medal quarter finals:
New Zealand v Wales
England v Samoa
Kenya v Australia
South Africa v Scotland

My observation is we didn't play the possession game well enough. Pushed and threw passes when we didn't need to and our ball security from the re-start was average (well England's was very good in the 2nd half).

Is this the 7's or the Wallabies you're talking about? I couldn't tell the difference ;)

That was a good performance by England against Oz: they were too good for our lads. Being "out-physicalled", and belted in scrums and restarts by England in any form of rugby is no new thing, but the surprise to me was that they handled the draining conditions better than our lot. By comparison our lads looked poorly prepared for the heat and humidity.

I mentioned when this Oz team was picked that, notwithstanding that some fellows weren't available, it had a poor balance of players. There were only two forwards in the squad and sometimes only one of the park. The problems they had in the scrums and and at the breakdown were on the cards and sadly I found the efforts of Cummins doing his best comical sometimes.

Oz also lacked true flyers who could take outside breaks or make breaks in midfield due to speed from half chances; but this was also foreshadowed earlier, as was the lack of steppers to make inroads up the middle.

The new Sevens team that will start playing before Xmas will be better than the Comm. Games team once they have a bit of experience together. Hopefully we'll have a flyer or two and the passports of the steppers will be acceptable to the IRB once more. They will probably have 4 forwards in the squad of 12, instead of 2, and hopefully one of them will be a fit Vanderglass. Mind you, they'll have to find another quarterback because Stannard may be committed to Super rugby.

If all that works out we could win a tournament next year to match the one we won in 2010. Then we may start to wonder what went so wrong in the Comm. Games when we had 2 forwards.

Ch10/One have been hopeless. Shits me to tears.

Anyone else see they have the EOYT as well? I thought it was on Ch9??

Foxtel might have exclusive rights to the live Sevens coverage... Urgh... Maybe it'll be pub time.

I doubt it. I would suggest that Channel 10 just put it in their programming when the can fit it in.

My business partner came in this morning and told me that he was up to 2am watch the Comm games. I said 'why?'. He said, 'because I was waiting for the rugby sevens game'.

I just laughed and told him that it was on about 4 hours earlier on fox.

I recorded about 6 hours of tv and fast forwarded through it all this morning to watch it.

ok, trying to work this out. So it is now just after 7am in Delhi. Australia play at 11.22, so thats in about 4 and a bit hours meaning they play at about 4pm Briso time?

then hopefully about 3 and a half hours after that (2.50 in India so 7.20) here for the semi final and then the gold medal game at about 11.15pm!

I seem to recall you saying weeks ago that we would miss Vanderglass hugely and that was on show yesterday. With him we would have been a chance of parity with the Poms, without him I don't think we'll get past the semi's.

Shit happens and Vanderglass was injured. What gets my goat is that they looked at enough players in the trials to track a few players for call up in case Vanderglass and Quirk were injured, which they subsequently were, but they replaced them with backs instead. If I am wrong and they were injured before the trials then the selection was bunk from the beginning.

I am sure that most could come up with the names of 3 or 4 players from the Sydney comp that are mobile and could act as 7s players better than the backs who replaced Vanderglass and Quirk. No doubt Brisbane folks could do the same in regards to their comp. IIRR I saw Phipps playing hooker yesterday FCOL.

I think they could have done with another big boppa. Jesse Parahi belted a few of the Samoans in last weeks Oceania Sevens final and scored two trys as well. He is also a lineout jumper.

They probably wish they took him to Delhi instead of sending him back to Sydney. Here he is in action playing for the Vikings in lsat Saturday's Central Coast Sevens http://ur7s.com/tournaments/cc7s/media/9808?showing=photo

Oz play Kenya to qualify for semis. Kenya beat Samoa; so Oz play Kenya; better for Oz on paper.
