If I remember correctly, the next three test matches were all decided by a margin of one point, be it a win or a loss. How times have changed we are now so far behind NZ, Australia would struggle to beat their 2nd XV or 3rd XV.

it is such a shame that our game is falling behind. Imagine how strong our talent pool would be if league stopped poaching our young players

reasonable point RL.

but i think the issues are systemic. rugby union is really only seen in the suburbs where range rovers are abound.

huge pool of talent across western sydney untapped - the allure of league and soccer too much.

it wasn't that long ago that CHS were a powerhouse at these rep carnivals, now fallen behind.

it seems that private schools might be the last bastion.

@wallabyinwaiting. Soccer and League are minor threats when compared to AFL. AFL is the real enemy, they have taken on Union and League in NSW, and are easily winning the war. Soccer just keeps shooting itself in the foot, until they get their fee structure right (way way too expensive with fees going upwards to pay the Socceroos) and have elite junior player competitions that doesn't mean traversing NSW every one or two weekends, they will never be a real force.

And private schools too have fallen to the AFL empire and the huge wads of cash being thrown about.

Though in saying all of that, what pisses me and a lot of other union supporters is the number of union school boys that league sign up, and never to be seen again.

Latest example was this year, ARU letting league sign Joseph Sua'ali'i to the end of 2021. By then he will be 18, and would have debuted for Souffs.

On a similar vein, there is lots of talk about pathways to rep sides. What is being done for all those boys in the 2nds, 3rds, 4ths etc to keep them playing after school. Are the Grade and Subbies clubs actively recruiting ?

As Andrew Hutton President of Lindfield Juniors said

"We need to focus on the benefit the game has to offer for everyone NOT just the rep players or A grade, these player aren’t the one leaving it’s the people such as myself who was never in a rep side, not in the 1st 15 but did play until I was 35 and have some of the best mates because of it. Even playing as poorly as I did the game gave me the opportunity to play in 4 different countries and know that regardless of where I was that community spirit and comradery of the game made me feel welcome"

Re that Cranbrook 86 win ... would be interested to see teamlists for both schools

Not entirely sure ... but might of been the year Cranbrook had Grant Lodge ... there wasn't much of him, but he was a slippery customer ... and unless I am mistaken he has abandoned Brook for Waverley .. having son or sons at Birrell Street.

So as a Waverley supporter hoping to see an elusive Lodge on the wing in future years

Seven trial games were played: Cranbrook (lost 6-4); Shore (won 12-9); Armidale (won 14-3); St Patrick's, Strathfield (won 14-9); St Aloysius (won 38-0); Marist, Pearce (won 8-3); Knox (won 42-0).

They got Joeys in their first pre-season game which had a number of players still on rowing duty which overlapped at the time. Good win though.

Those then selected for NSW teams were:

NSW 1 Mark Bell, Brian O'Sullivan, Tom Cross(c), Darren Junee, Michael Jorgensen, Wayne Chan.
NSW 2: Andrew Cairns.
NSW Shadow Team: Andrew Hilton, Ivan Chan.

Tom Cross was awarded the Matthew Street Trophy for the Best NSW player in the Australian Championships held in Adelaide.

After the State Championships, the following were selected to play for the Australian Schoolboys on their tour of New Zealand: Mark Bell (front row), Tom Cross (flanker), Andrew Cairns (halfback).

Mark Bell was awarded the best and fairest for Australia in the 'test' match against New Zealand.

Thanks Sonny. One of my passions is history and being close to Joeys I have access to some online material which allows me to research quickly. And yes, Merv did my left knee when I screwed it up on a motorbike in late 80's. Tom was one hell of a loose forward.

So the U16s NSW Schools teams were supposed to be named on Monday 8th July. Then they were supposed to be named by 10am today. They actually did before 10am, which many parents and observers saw. And then they took them down, citing withdrawals, and that the teams would be named later today.

Now they cite technical difficulties, and that the teams will be announced at a later date (DOOH there is a rep tournament on 20-21 July, you better hurry up)!!!

I have recently found out that a couple of CAS boys are playing in the Australian Schools Rugby Championships via other teams (i.e. ASRU COMBINED STATES XV and CAVALIERS BARBARIANS XV) and I think need a mention. These boys are:

Knox: 7 (Tom Gratwick, W.Kablau, D.Breden, E.Grobler, S.Rechner, O.Cheal, O.Evans)
Waverly: 6 (A.Rice, M.Amatosero, M.D’agostino, R.Volkman, L.Milford, W.Fagan)
Barker: 4 (A.Brown, J.Cameron, L.Vass, D.Wilson)
Cranbrook: 4 (T.Smith, H.Hayman, P.Tagg, A.O'Reilly)
Trinity: 1 (S.Vuki)
Aloys: 1 (S.Spalding)
Also need to consider that Pollard isn't counted in this and any others like him that are taking different pathways.
