CAS 2019

I have recently found out that a couple of CAS boys are playing in the Australian Schools Rugby Championships via other teams (i.e. ASRU COMBINED STATES XV and CAVALIERS BARBARIANS XV) and I think need a mention. These boys are:
S.Vuki (T) - Combined States #10
H.Hayman (C) - Cavaliers Barbarians #1
O.Cheal (K) - Cavaliers Barbarians #7
S.Spalding (A) - Cavaliers Barbarians #10
O.Evans (K) - Cavaliers Barbarians #11
L.Milford (W) - Cavaliers Barbarians #12
W.Fagan (W) - Cavaliers Barbarians #15
A.O'Reilly (C) - Cavaliers Barbarians #20

I think you will find Patrick Tagg (C) also made the Cavaliers Barbarians side in the #3 jersey

M.Jorgensen wasn't quite as good as his younger brother P.Jorgensen.

He also was hampered by a knee injury, both played Australian schoolboys and started their Rugby at Newington. But Joeys offered incentives that New did not, back in those days. These days they would have stayed at Newington

Tagg (C) is a wonderful player with an extraordinary work rate. That being said, I have only seen two Cranbrook games but in both (Knox and Aloys) he was exceptional in both attack and defense and he could've gotten stiffed for a NSW 2's Jumper...

So after considering these number there are 23 CAS boys in Australian Schools Champs with each school having the respective numbers:
Knox: 7 (Tom Gratwick, W.Kablau, D.Breden, E.Grobler, S.Rechner, O.Cheal, O.Evans)
Waverly: 6 (A.Rice, M.Amatosero, M.D’agostino, R.Volkman, L.Milford, W.Fagan)
Barker: 4 (A.Brown, J.Cameron, L.Vass, D.Wilson)
Cranbrook: 4 (T.Smith, H.Hayman, P.Tagg, A.O'Reilly)
Trinity: 1 (S.Vuki)
Aloys: 1 (S.Spalding)
Also need to consider that Pollard isn't counted in this and any others like him that are taking different pathways.

given how well Aloys did over waverly perhaps the numbers should be reversed

Predictions for Round 3 of CAS
SAC vs Barker: Barker have made the most of a favourable schedule to start the year and sit atop the CAS ladder with 2 wins from 2 starts and have certainly flexed their muscles already this year. Despite some controversial interior rumblings in terms of the coaching staff, it’s hard to go past them as premiership favourites. That being said, Aloys are capable of anything as they proved at DV and Spalding (12) could give the Barker back three some headaches with his kicking. I just don’t think aloys have another 70 performance in them like the emotionally Waverley game. Barker by 21.

Cranbrook v Waverley: the local derby at DV, doesn’t get much better. Cranbrook despite being one win ahead on the ladder will undoubtedly view themselves as the underdogs and based on preseason form, fair enough. This ladder positioning was not a factor in terms of NSW representations though, with Cranbrook having 1 to Waverley’s 4. Waverley will he keen to avenge their early losses and while Cranbrook will put up a fight, I can’t see a Waverley side this talented losing three home games on the trot. Waverley by 25+ and Hutchison Walters (12) to have a blinder.

Knox vs TGS: after a tough loss under lights at Easts, Knox will be back to their best and hosting multiple representative players who have stayed at top gear throughout the break. Grobler (2) and Rechner (12) will play a huge role in the results and dare I say could be decisive in whether this turns into a training run or a dog fight. Trinity have proven to be a quality side and while this is no new insight, I wouldn’t be surprised if Vuki unlocked the White Wall of Wahroonga and laid on a few tries in a boilover. All in all, Knox by 10 but if Trinity turn up, could be a serious ballgame.

Corn,

Agree with RE Barker v Aloys. While they played a blinder, i think there was an element of the stars aligning for SAC as well. Have to say that I think Knox v Trinity will be decisive for Knox - agree that the sizeable portion of their squad playing rep footy over the break tends to do wonders for a side in terms of experience.

However, have to disagree about waves v cranners. i know what we've all come to expect from waverley over the years, but seriously, they can't be gold all the time. didn't look like they wanted it against aloys, and floundered (from reports) against Knox. now its certainly not going to be an easy game for Brook, but going down by 25+??. Extreme. not sure about waverley, but it was mentioned earlier that cranbrook play shore, so they can get the cobwebs out.

schoolboy footy changes week to week. aloys proved the competition is open, and if waves lose three home games on trot to the likes of aloys and cranbrook, well, its game on.

Couldn't agree more Wallaby IW, knowing a lot of the Cranbrook Bretheren, there is a strong belief that BROOK will deliver at Death Valley, time will tell... What will be present is a 20/30/40 Waves year school reunion present, of which I am one, so the crowd will be BIG, just hope the weather is kind. Trust that info will infuse some serious Brook support, if not, the Waves will win!

WTF?

Barker 16A's and 1st XV play St Pats @ Strathfield on Saturday morning - 10am and 11.15 matches.

Cranners versus Shore should give Brook a good hit-out

Not sure if Waverley has had any opportunities over the holidays or if they have a game this weekend? WLF?

what I do know is Waverley will be smarting from being ... Zero from 2 ... so Brook had better be full strength... come the 27th.

as any complacency will be gone .. and Waverley will be very hungry to make amends.

Although ironically I think Waverley's best chance is not to out-muscle Cranbrook, but instead to get the backs working more cohesively and attacking Brook on the edges, and the midfield (which tends to be there go to play). Cranners does have some suspect defenders on the wings IMHO ... and Waverley need to be careful of too much crash and bash in the mid-field ... mungo style.

Hi men, took a break from G&GR as I took a holiday with my family. Been an exciting few weeks I've noticed with my quick catchup, congrats to all those boys with representative selections.

Excited to get back into the CAS footy next weekend, expecting Barker to get up over Aloys by plenty. Can't see Aloys sneaking under anyone again after the Waverley game.

Waverley vs Cranbrook - boy this will be a stunner. Battle of the Easts, Cranbrook are up, Waverley are down - anyone's game. I still back the brutality of the Waves, in a close one though.

I'll be heading out to watch the mighty black and blue take on Trinity at Summer Hill. One would back Knox with the tidy and sizeable forward pack but I can't wait to see what the Trinity lads throw at them. If they roll out Ieremia at 12 against Rechner, I'd love to see Vuki put him through some holes and potentially cause an upset. But I'm going to say Knox by 8.

You have to wonder tho'....Why? Why St Pats, which is not doing so well in its competition and why play it and run the risk of injury just prior to the next round. Cant see the logic in it.
