Brumbies 2025

TSR

Andrew Slack (58)
I find the Brunbies v Drua game first up really intriguing.

Regardless of standings on the ladder, Drua in Fiji is one of the toughest games on the schedule and seems to take a big toll on teams the following week.

Brumbies have an imposing roster, but a couple of their players potentially need careful management. I’m mainly thinking Slipper, but also Ala'alatoa has had his issues. Larkham has done pretty well with building squad depth but he is already starting the season without two of his best forwards.

With Super Rugby being pretty much a sprint and top 2 being so important, does Larkham take his very best squad to Fiji (it is the opener after all) and just rely on them all getting through in good nick or does he hold back 2-3 of his players and rely on squad depth to manage the load for the first 2 weeks.

Given it is week 1 I know some will baulk at any suggestion player load should be managed one week in, but I think history shows the Fiji trip is particularly gruelling. Also I’m reminded of years gone by when Kiwi teams regularly gave their best players a slow intro to the year and accepted the risk of a slow start with the trade off being that they were firing at the business end.

Maybe I’m overthinking it and Larkham is not even contemplating playing anything but his best squad but I won’t be surprised if there is sone sqaud management for rounds 1 & 2.

Good thoughts TSR. I suspect Larkham has it clear in his mind as to what he'll do as he's been very cautious so far with the Wallaby contingent. Of the current 7 Wallaby XXIII and Charlie Cale, only Noah Lolesio has had a run. Cale and Valetini will miss the first couple or few rounds, but otherwise I believe he will be wanting to get the rest on the field in Fiji. It looks like Tuilima might have the inside running to replace Valetini in 6, while Rory Scott seems to be the next in line for the 8 spot.

It will be interesting to see if Larkham goes the Schmidt way with Ikitau at 12, which I am in favour of, given his form there on the EOYT. Options for the 13 spot would be Feliuai, Anderson, Creighton and Pritchard. Feliuai is essentially a 12 and sustained an injury against the Force, so maybe can be ruled out in the short term. Anderson has looked particularly sharp in the trials but again has been in the 12 spot. Creighton has played 13 and has the most experience but he would be a very conservative selection and maybe not so suited to the style of play from the Drua. Pritchard probably has the most potential but is just out of U20s. OTOH, he is a large body, 191m and 96kg, has excellent pace and ability to break the line. His form in the trials has been very good.

At full strength, the Brumbies have a strong engine room with Wallabies in Slipper, Lonergan, Ala'alatoa, Frost, Neville, Schoupp and Pollard. The backrow is equal of any with Valetini, Reimer and Cale, while Lolesio, Ikitau, Wright form the backbone of the Wallabies attack. I am quietly confident they will again lead the way for Aussie sides in SR2025.

Noting that Lolesio is out this week with concussion, is he starting to build up a bit of a history? I seem to recall him being out with it a few times before

A quick google brings up 2 occasions in 2022.

It's not good, but probably not out of the ordinary for a 25 year old inside back with 100+ pro caps (which in itself is a bit concerning).

I would be very surprised if they listed him as concussed just because they planned on resting him. Concussion protocol restricts what training he can do throughout the recovery period. If the felt the need to list an injury for a rest period they'd just list an innocuous part of the leg, but I don't see why Larkham would when he didn't for others.

Quality operator Van Nek. Also very important to lock up young tightheads for the whole national setup. He is still only 25 and has performed really well for the Brumbies the last 2 seasons, consistently in the 23 man squad. Reliable scrummager who if he sticks at it should get an opportunity at some point for the Wallabies.

Sounds like Rory Scott is out for tonight’s game with a rolled ankle. C.Neville looks to be on the bench. So either Lachie Shaw has dropped into the backrow or Tualima is in the backrow with the two locks (Shaw and Neville) as no.19 and 20.
