IMO that would be an absolute mistake, Coleman is talented but he isn't a Super Rugby 5/8, To'omua has the talent, just needs a bit of time and investment in his development.

TOCC Coleman has played 5/8 for almost all of his rugby. He played 5/8 for Australian Schoolboys, plays club rugby as a 5/8, played Brumby Runners as a 5/8, was contracted as a 5/8, and debuted as a 5/8. It was only because of To'omua’s shortcomings during preseason which saw him dropped and Coleman promoted to fill the backline. Playing at inside centre this year he played a lot of first receiver in attack and performed well. If he is given the same time and investment for development you mention for To'omua, there is no reason why he cannot develop into a Super xv class 5/8.

I agree with you that To'omua is chockers will talent, he just needs to step it up now with Giteau gone, and his 2011 performances is giving me some concerns. I hope he comes good.

To'omua was brilliant at school level and OZ Scoolboys - controlled games with superb kicking. He just hasn't quite displayed that talent on a consistent basis at top level - hope he realluy steps up in 2012 - he is also very "downn to earth" and a fine young man.

To'omua at the moment is playing a long way behind the advantage line and too often, just shoveling it wide playing pass the parcel

He looks great when he plays closer to the advantage line and is more direct

Debuted where at 5/8?

Was he really contracted as a 5/8?

To be fair, while he has played a lot at flyhalf, it was his form at inside centre at the junior world cup (where To'omua played 5/8) which has won him the most praise...

A fully fit To'omua will play 5/8 and will be better off with some consistent top level game time, and Coleman will be at 12...

Debuted where at 5/8? Yes, against the Reds in 2010.

Was he really contracted as a 5/8? Orginally yes, Brumbies even had him solely listed as 'Flyhalf' on the website. He has since signed a new contract, and is now listed as a 'Flyhalf/Inside Centre' which reflects his development this year and is obviously now seen as more than just a 5/8.

IMO, the Brumbies need to sign Mowen and both an inside and outside back. With Elsom leaving, the Brumbies really need a tough, hard-working #6 and for me Mowen is the obvious answer. A pack with Moore, Alexander, Kimlin, Mowen, Hooper/Fainga'a and Vaea is certainly formidable, but with Giteau AND Ashley-Cooper leaving I really think that the backline is lacking oomph. For me, To'omua/Lealiifano don't pack enough punch to direct the attack of such an inexperienced backline. McCabe is not mature enough to take a senior role, and still needs to play under a few elder statesman before be truly fulfills his potential. Somebody like Rob Horne, Ryan Cross or Lachie Turner could really help the Brumbies, as there's only a few spots up for the taking in NSW.

Thanks for posting that contract list BJ

So contracted players for next year are 24:

- Props: Jerry Yanuyanutawa (2012***), Ben Alexander (2013), Dan Palmer (2012), Jono Owen (2013)
- Hookers: Stephen Moore (2013)
- 2nd row: Ben Hand (2012), Sam Carter (2013), Peter Kimlin (2013)
- Flankers: Colby Fainga'a (2013), Michael Hooper (2012), Julian Salvi (2012)**
- No. 8: Ita Vaea (2013), Stephen Hoiles (2012), Fotu Auelua * (2013)
[That's 14 forwards already, unless Salvi leaves, and it's only 13.]

- Scrummies: Nic White (2012)
- Flyhalves: Matt To'omua (2012), Christian Lealiifano (2012)*
- Centres: Robbie Coleman (2013)*, Ed Stubbs (2012), Andrew Smith (2012)*
- Back Three: Henry Speight (2012), Cam Crawford (2013), Joseph Tomane (2013), Pat McCabe * ***
[That's only 10 backs]

* Can play other positions
** Julian Salvi – may be released?
*** Not yet signed but probably staying
**** if he is selected for Fiji in the RWC he would be considered a marquee player.

• Assuming that all Oz teams can have 30 FCPs (full contract players), including 2 foreigners, and 3 to 5 RPs (rookie players), and Salvi leaves, and Jake wants a 16/14 split, the Brumbies needs are:

Forwards
- Props: One FCP plus one RP.
- Hooker: One FCP and one RP.
- 2nd row: One FCP and one RP (could include a lock/6)
- Flankers: One RP 6.
- No.8: OK
[That makes 16 FCP forwards and it assumes that Salvi is leaving; plus 4 RPs.

Backs
Scrummie: One seasoned FCP, plus one RP.
Flyhalf: OK
Centres: One FCP 13.
Back Three: 2 FCPs preferably all flyers.
[That makes 14 FRP backs and 30 in total and 5 RPs in total.]

• In the forwards the greatest need is for the recruitment of a hardosed back up for Moore. Siliva has been mentioned but he is still a baby and should be earmarked for the rookie spot.

• The next, or an equal need, is for a hard-nosed lock or better yet if the rookie is such as well. These won't be household names and they won't be tall timber either, but they need to be tough nuts. I have mentioned likely suspects like Tom Alexander and Ed Gower before, and I hope the Brumbs have Dave McDuling's phone number as well.

• There seems to be no room for Ben Mowen but if a hard nosed club Super rookie prop is available he could take that FCP spot.

• In the backs the biggest need is the recruitment of an experienced scrumhalf as counterpoint to White. The next greatest need is some more speed in the back three.

• I doubt if Jerry Y would be needed for Fiji with Graham Dewes and Campese Ma'afu available.

• Note: all the FCPs and RPs wearing jerseys 1-6 should be seasoned club players.

All these things have been discussed already? As you were then.

I think your right with most things LG. I would like to see Ben Mowen at 6. They certainly need a lock, hopefully one with experience. With outside backs possibly the likes of Sills or Grant in shute shield in terms of speed or internationally

If, within my long-winded analysis of Brumbies needs, a spot can be found for Mowen, it would make recruitment of shorter gruntier locks more valid as Mowen is an excellent lineout target.

Also they could recruit Caderyn Neville as a rookie; not yet hard-nosed but a lineout specialist, which further promotes the cause of at least one shorter lock, since his squad effect is balanced.

Coleman came in as a replacement for AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) that match...

Giteau was playing flyhalf...

Yes Coleman replaced AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper), but he played flyhalf. Giteau moved to fullback when AAC (Adam Ashley-Cooper) went off. Go watch the tapes if you insist.

Coleman needs gym time... too small now but talented he will come on in 2013-14... Not a starter next season very week.

They're not bad bones to be working with, although the brums definitely need some enforcers in the forwards. I think Mowen would be a good addition to the ranks as well as a tough back up hooker.

Halfback is also a key signing - surely a spot here for a marquee signing. Does anyone know of any handy 9's coming off contract for next year?
