Former Western Force scrum-half and Australian Sevens star James "Chucky" Stannard will be back next season, two years after he last played Super rugby for the club.

Stannard has answered an SOS from the Force to fill the vacancy left by Justin Turner, who is expected to be sidelined for nine months after injuring a knee in last month's IRB junior world championships.

Stannard, 27, who is in Wallaby Sevens camp preparing for the Commonwealth Games in October in New Delhi, had been weighing up offers from French clubs and interest from the ACT Brumbies.

"It would be great to get back to Perth and back into Super rugby," Stannard said.

"I'm pretty excited. I've been thinking about it for a while."

Stannard is expected to finalise his contract with the Force next week.

Chief executive Vern Reid said talks were "well down the track".

"James has a strong desire to return to Perth. We are now finetuning his contract," Reid said.

Force assistant coach Richard Graham said Stannard would be a good fit for the club

"He's good mates with a lot of the boys that are still here and very familiar with Perth," Graham said.

Stannard moved to Perth in 2006 from Brisbane Souths and won RugbyWA's prestigious PG Hampshire Award for best and fairest when he was playing fly-half for Palmyra.

When he was selected in the Force academy two years later, coaching staff channelled his skills to the base of the scrum.

A few months later, he made his Super debut against the Cheetahs when Matt Henjak was sacked after a hotel brawl with teammate Haig Sare.

He went on to play a handful of games before being released at the end of that year when the Force signed Josh Valentine and kept Chris O'Young and Turner.

Stannard joined the Brumbies' program in Canberra and has been playing club rugby for Eastwood in Sydney. He received a surprise call-up to the Australian Sevens in 2009.

The squad was training in Canberra and Stannard went along to make up the numbers as opposition.

A couple of weeks later he was called by selectors and played in the last two rounds of the IRB tournament.

He signed an ARU Sevens contract this year and has excelled in the shortened version of the game, amassing more than 150 points.

He has captained the side twice, including during the London tournament where he led Australia to their first win since 2002 and was named player of the tournament.

This article was in the West Australian on 10th July but have not seen any follow-up to confirm that he has signed a contract...

I wish I had known that before my last comment but I'm glad that Stannard has got a gig but sad that young Turner is out for some long - must be a knee recon.

OK the Brumbies obviously knew all that. Therefore Phibbs.

Steve Larkham expected be announced as Brumbies attack coach. He won't be released by his Japanese club until the end of the year so will make some appearances in pre-season and then be back full time by February.

Larkham confirmed as backs coach, along with Caputo and Harrison on the coaching staff..

Good move regarding Larkham

What's the deal with Harrison? Did he sign a one year deal at the beginning of the year with a guaranteed coaching gig to follow? Didn't play much.

Not a Brumbies fan, but follower, things to look at for 2011:

- Kimlin's return
- To'omua's emergence
- a better scrum

Definitely can't wait for Kimlin to return... especially as the Wallabies are currently missing another good lock option...

I'm excited about Larkham... but I felt Finegan did good work with the forwards and I'm just not sure if Harrison or Caputo really have the qualifications to further develop the pack?

never heard of him. Anyone else?

Flying fullback Samu Wara has signed a one-year rookie contract with the CA Technologies Brumbies for the 2011 Super Rugby season.

The league convert joined the Brumbies Academy in early 2010 and kicked off his rugby career with two tries on debut in the Brumby Runners’ 29-5 win over West Harbour in March.

The 24-year-old was a Balmain Tigers junior and represented the club’s Premier League side in 2007. He spent the past two seasons representing the North Sydney Bears in Premier League.

Wara, who has scored four tries since linking with Canberra club – Easts, says he’s looking forward to the new challenges rugby present.

“I’m over the moon with this opportunity – it’s very exciting,” he said. “It was a big decision to change codes but I felt my game suited rugby, it was a chance to try something new and there seemed to be more opportunities.

“It’s been different and there’s been a lot to learn each week but the coaches have been great in working with me to understand things like positional play and running lines.

“The Brumbies asked me to come down and be a part of the Academy. It’s been great so far and I want to keep learning the game and work towards having a crack at Super Rugby next year.”

Head Coach Andy Friend says Wara is could be a dangerous prospect on the end of a CA Technologies backline.

“Sam has the potential to be a real excitement machine in our code,” he said. “He knows how to finish and create opportunities. He was a regular try scorer in the Premier League, and he has that ability to sniff out and finish off a try, which is often something you can’t coach.

“In terms of rugby, he’s still relatively raw but he’s got a fantastic base level of skills backed up by plenty of natural ability.

“He’s a very elusive outside back with a good step and excellent acceleration. Sam understands that he’s got a lot to learn about the code and so far he’s been meticulous in doing everything he can to ensure his transition is as smooth as possible.”

Wara joins Ed Stubbs, Nick White, Colby Fainga'a and Michael Hooper as members of the Brumbies Academy who have been promoted to the CA Technologies squad for the 2011 Super Rugby season.

Don't know anything about him as he didn't play in the Runners games I saw. I rate Stubbs and White though.

Interesting that the journo used the term rookie contract.

Good signing IMO. My mate has raved on about him since he joined the Brumbies Academy last season. Says he is a typical Fijian, big, strong and fast with very good footwork.

Are you sure your mate's not having a lend of you, rugby man? "Physical: 1.84m, 90kg". That's not exactly big for a 24-year-old Fijian.

What is it with the Brumbies employing former players (often with no coaching experience) as coaches? A longing for the glory days of Brumbyball perhaps?

I wrote earlier that I thought he was too laid back to be a coach but naza responded:

Are you kidding ? He was basically our backline coach for a couple of years there. There was a Mat Rogers piece in the SMH at the time where he basically said Bernie was the one breaking defences down and coming up with the set piece moves. Bernie forever !!

He's a brainy guy (Larkham, that is) - let's see how he goes.

BR, I've seen him play once and he didnt look small on the field. He actually looked quite big, not tall but looked very solid with a good build. He played alright in that game, but my mate is always raving about how he carves the opposition. We'll have to wait and see if he is telling the truth.

I think the Brumbies could put together a very young exciting backline post 2011... assuming Giteau leaves:

9. White
10. To'omua
11. Fainifo/Wara
12. Coleman (if they finally give him a contract) or Lealiifano
13. Stubbs/A Smith
14. McCabe
15. Ashley-Cooper
