I know you hit a paywall but you can do the ol hit refresh and then 'esc' key a split second later it will bypass it. Might take a few goes but it gets it eventually without fail.

Pretty clear indication on the direction they are going in terms of sports broadcasting. Could easily see them being a potential bidder for the Nations Championship.
Could be shit if Netflix got into something like Nations Champs etc. Was talking to some fellas in Wales and they telling me with rugby on different pay channels etc, to watch all their rugby it would cost them 90 quid a month, thats about $180-199 in Aus and NZ. I pretty keen on just paying the one subscription for ir. Though here in NZ all our stuff is on Sky, but URC is is atreamed on a FTA channel

Netflix is the biggest streaming platform in the world with a significant reach. Most Rugby fans would already subscribe. I personally have Netflix, Stan, Prime, Disney+ and Apple TV. So this wouldn't impact access too much as it stands. The issue in the UK around the fragmentation of their content is unique to them. Where you have the URC, Premiership, Champions Cup and June/November internationals spreads across several platforms.

Accessing sport in the UK is straight up mentally fucking deranged. I feel bad for those fluffybunnys.

Yep mate understand many have Netflix, but probably like Stan, if they do sport you will pay extra.

Well with only 8 days until the exclusive negotiation period finishes, it sounds like Stan/Nine haven’t offered what RA want/need, so will be interesting now to see what comes from going to the market…

What would be a good number from Nine though? I believe they are currently on around 32m and need an increase. 50 would ease some issues but is unlikely.
It would be great if they could have enough for a marketing budget again and start producing some of the classic commercials from 15-20 years ago.

This will put a cat among the pidgeons - good news for RA -https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/billionaire-backed-sports-streamer-buys-foxtel-20241216-p5kyqd.html
Not necessarily…

it might mean a pause on negotiations from Foxtel whilst they finalise the sale which will take a good 6 months.

Also I’d argue this removes one of they key value add propositions that Foxtel offered, they’re no longer embedded in the News Corp empire which has ramifications across the Newspaper coverage and synergies which occurred there.

it’ll serve as a disruptor for sure though

I wonder if the AFL and NRL have clauses allowing them to re-negotiate if the ownership of Foxtel changes? That value-add through News Corp newspapers must have a significant value for them.

That separation of Newscorp from Foxsports/Kayo is the far and away the most interesting part of this for me. They do still have a stake in the Broncos I think (not sure about other teams), but I doubt that's significant enough to influence their coverage going forward.

Given the way broadcast deals have influenced sporting coverage in the past we are stepping into uncharted waters for Australian sport here.

Given Saudi Arabia are also looking to invest in DAZN, there’s a massive geo-political issue here as well.

Especially when you consider Qatar, a geo-political rival of Saudi Arabia are looking to host a final of the Nations Chanpionship in 2028. Saudi Arabia won’t want their media vehicle advertising Qatar.

BeIN is state owned by Qatar, and already has strong stakes in rugby. So this is the unspoken factor behind some of these negotiations, which is more relevant to FIFA and Football, but has considerations for rugby also.

DAZN has minimal if any ads. It’s all paid like kayo. I’m pretty sure they could not advertise Qatar.
They show a variety of tournaments - don’t have promo pieces in.
I don’t see Qatar hosting a tourney as an issue. Not to mention that despite a diplomatic spat in 2020, the countries are in very good terms and the two leaders get along very well.
DAZN is a great service. Hope they find a way to bid

It would be advertising Qatar simply by virtue of hosting the Nations Championship there, who just like Australian cities would plaster the stadium with Qatari advertising.

Saying the two countries are on “very good terms“ is a massive stretch… The geopolitical differences and friction pre-date 2017 by decades, which was really a culmination of events leading up-to, rather then an isolated incident. There’s cultural and religious differences which date hundreds of years relating to Shia and Sunni branches of Islam. Qatars support of Iran in the Iran-Saudi proxy war mean these two will never be on very good terms, they may be in a mutual tie at a political level but they’re still both competing massively in soft power.

Al Jazeera and beIN have long being a signficant tool of Qatar for projecting soft power, not just in the region but internationally and Saudi Arabia have been playing catch-up in comparison, which is why DAZN is unsurprising.

jheeze, we are deep into the pre-season chat when are discussing the geopolitics implications of a foriegn billioniaire, buying a streaming service which may or may not buy the rights to rugby union.

am enjoying it though.

Australian Government just signed off on $600million for PNG NRL team for similar geopolitical reasons..… the lines are increasingly blurred..

Classic pre-season banter, but I’m here for it!
Who knew streaming rights could spark such an interesting debate about rugby’s future?
