Bad time, started while the AFL gf was on & while the lead up to Panthers v Souths. Would have only be die hards watching cant imagine casuals tuning in.

That AFL grand final was over as competitive game by 3pm!

You are right though, the wedged timeslot wouldn't have helped, nor did the ending to Bled 1. Casuals aren't going to tune into a dead rubber.

Appreciate the effort @The_Wookie
By chance do you have the consolidated ratings of previous years?

This is what I have of last year's, there's a few holes and cant attest to the accuracy of the data.

This weekend (NRL) and last weekend (AFL) are really the times I notice the gap in the casual fan engagement with our game.

Can’t remember the last time someone outside the direct supporters of an Aussie Super Rugby team organised something like a GF BBQ or similar ‘just because’.

I’m in Brisbane and have had more people ask me who I’m going for in the NRL GF tonight than I can recall. Stark contrast to me discussing Super Rugby finals games earlier this year and mostly being met with surprise they were even being played.

Not to mentioned both AFL and NRL being plastered all over main stream media outlets all weekend.

It happens often enough in my friendship group in Brisbane, and even more in my expat group when I was in London (around wallabies games), but each group has a very dedicated core of rugby fans so it's far from standard. The last time I remember it happening in the wider public was 2011 - both for the world cup and the Reds title run, but it was probably all the way back to the 2003 world cup when it was last a consistent thing.

It's tricky from a domestic perspective because there's rarely going to be as much interest in a neutral final without Australian representation, but the 2027 world cup does loom as that chance to capture the public consciousness again for a little while and hopefully lay a base to build from. It really can't be understated how make or break the period from 2025 to ~2030 or so will be for Australian rugby.

Stan Sport mightn't be perfect, but they've done much better then the A-League/Paramount who have been littered with technical issues since the beginning and still 18months in

Crikey that's poor - Optus' streaming platform was / still is having major stability issues for the Prem League too?

I have more random playback issues with Kayo than I do Stan these days tbh.

Not sure how true it is, but radio station I listen to here in NZ was aying that although NSW had real good ratings fron NRL final on weekend it seems that elsewhere in Aus and overseas the figures were lowest ever. Also said the number of online viewing was up, is this how sports viewing is going do you think?
